Don’t romanticise murder by calling it honour killing: Activists condemn use of term

Several Telugu newspapers and television channels have referred to 24-year-old Pranay’s murder as an 'honour killing.’
“Dear friend, you weren’t killed because of love or your love. You were killed as our castes are still alive,” said Ravi Teja Rambarki, a scholar from Hyderabad Central University, as he learnt of Dalit man Pranay Perumalla’s murder. The horrific murder of the 24-year-old in front of his pregnant wife, allegedly in a caste killing, has shaken Telangana. “Just because you gave birth to them, you will decide whom they should marry, which clothes to wear, what food to eat, what they should study… Instead of killing them like this why don’t you stop giving birth?” activist Prof Sujatha Surepally said in a Facebook post. On Friday, Pranay and his wife Amrutha, who is three months pregnant, had gone to the hospital for a routine check-up. As they were exiting the hospital, an unidentified man walked up behind Pranay and attacked him with a machete. Preliminary investigation by the police has suggested this is a caste killing. Pranay belonged to a Dalit Christian family, which is of the Mala caste, while Amrutha is of the Vaishya caste (a caste group categorised as Forward). Several Telugu newspapers and television channels have referred to the murder as an 'honour killing.’ The usage of the term has been questioned by activists on social media.  “It’s caste arrogance, not an honour killing,” activist Dunna Ambedkar posted on social media.  “This murder, termed ‘honour killing’ by casteist and communal elements, is another proof of how deep and cruel the caste system is. It reminds us that nothing has changed in the social fabric of this country and as long as the caste system continues, Dalits need protection. This ghastly broad daylight murder deserves outright condemnation by all sections of society,” Jayaraju Yeggoni, a senior advocate and Dalit activist, said. Dr Pasunuri Ravinder, a Dalit activist and a Sahithya Akademi winner, stated that several media outlets calling the murder an ‘honour killing’ is insensitive towards the atrocities committed against Dalits. “It's not an honour killing but an honour-less killing… the use of such insensitive phrases will reduce the extremity of the crime and lead to a passive narration. This is happening since the media, too, has an upper caste attitude,” he said. “The media has always embodied casteism by reducing such crimes as a murder for honour. This is a language used by culprits. It has no social approval. How can media use such words that reduce the graveness of the crime and tends to justify the murder?” said linguist Dr Uday Bhanu Kurrella Swamy, an academic, said, "Don't romanticise this by calling it an honour killing. This is a murder by powerful caste Hindus.” Several Dalit activists are heading to Miryalaguda to attend Pranay’s last rites, which is likely to be held on Sunday.  Meanwhile, as Pranay’s family mourns his death, his wife Amrutha spoke to TNM and alleged that her father had told her multiple times that he would kill Pranay, as she did not obey his wishes. Pranay and Amrutha had eloped and married in January this year. Pranay’s family, while speaking to TNM, stated that they had received threats from Maruti Rao, Amrutha's father. The police have launched an investigation into the murder.  Read: Only my father is capable of doing this: Amrutha, wife of murdered Telangana Dalit man

According to the police, a staff member of the school lured the girl with a chocolate, during the interval.
Tension prevailed in Hyderabad's old city area on Friday night after the alleged rape of a four-year-old girl at a private school.  The incident took place on Friday when a staff member of the school lured the girl with a chocolate, during the interval. The accused then proceeded to take her to an isolated area and sexually abuse her, the police said.  After she reached home at around 12:30 pm, the girl told her parents that she was experiencing pain in her private parts and then narrated what happened.  Following this, the parents rushed to the school and staged a protest. As news of the incident spread, a large number of people gathered outside the school, shouting slogans of 'We want justice'.  As tension escalated, the Golconda police, which had reached the spot, attempted to pacify the crowd.  According to media reports, some locals pelted stones on the empty buses that were parked in the school's premises, while others vandalised some furniture and other property belonging to the institute.  Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin also visited the school and met the family of the girl.  Speaking to TNM, the legislator said, "I was out campaigning at around 6 pm when I received the news. I rushed to the school and met with the protesting family. They were understandably agitated. I enquired about the girl's health and assured the locals of swift justice." Hyderabad Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar has also taken note of the case.  The police have advised people not to reveal details of the school, to protect the victim's identity. The institute has since switched off its contact numbers.   The girl was sent for a medical test at a government-run hospital in the city, where she is also undergoing treatment, personally supervised by the Superintendent of the hospital. An official told TNM that she has undergone surgery and though she is in pain, she is recovering. The protesting crowd that had gathered at the school, later dispersed, but the police has stepped up security in the area to avoid any untoward incidents. Security has also been beefed up at the hospital where the four-year-old has been admitted. Meanwhile, the accused has been taken into police custody."As soon as we conducted a preliminary investigation, a case was registered under Section 376 (Rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. We have taken the accused into custody. Further details will be revealed later," Golconda SHO Mohd Munawar told TNM.

Comedian Manoj's jokes about Mahesh Babu: Telugu Film body urges Nadigar Sangam to act

However, Manoj is not part of the Nadigar Sangam as he's not an actor and is a stand-up comedian.
After popular stand-up comedian Manoj Prabakar was abused online for his comments on Tollywood actor Mahesh Babu, the Telugu Movie Artist Association (MAA) has now sent a notice to the Nadigar Sangam in Chennai, asking the film body to enquire and take appropriate action against the comedian. The letter comes in the wake of the vicious abuse that Manoj Prabakar has been facing for the past two days after a video of his, that was shot almost a year ago, surfaced on the Internet. In the video, the comedian can be seen making fun of Mahesh Babu for his movie Spyder and comparing him to Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif. In the letter issued by MAA, the organisation has called the comments ‘extremely derogatory’, and suggested that it may create bad vibes with the Tamil film industry. “Though these are irresponsible comments of an individual, we fear that this will reflect to a certain extent on the esteemed Nadigar Sangam,” the letter reads. While the letter alleges that the comments were made by Manoj Prabakar during an award function, the truth remains that the artist had performed the stand-up during a mock-award function organised by a comedy club in Chennai. The letter further calls the Tamil industry the ‘Banyan Tree of South Indian cinema’ and requests the Nadigar Sangam to enquire into it and take action against the ‘actor’ to restore the ‘beautiful’ relationship between both the industries. While the letter berates the comedian for his ‘irresponsible’ comments on the actor, it's unclear why MAA sent it to the Nadigar Sangam. Manoj Prabakar is a stand-up comedian and is neither an actor nor a member of the organisation. Therefore, Nadigar Sangam, as an organisation, has no accountability for the comedian's actions. In the video that has gone viral, Manoj compares Mahesh Babu to Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif. Manoj says that Mahesh Babu has a face similar to Katrina's, beautiful yet devoid of any expressions. Manoj mocks the actor’s choice to play the role of a hacker in Spyder and compares Mahesh Babu to Mark Zuckerberg, with a dig over the infamous Cambridge Analytica scam. He further jokes that when Mahesh Babu’s personal WhatsApp account was hacked, all that could be found were emojis with a single expression. The comments, for sure, didn’t go down well with Mahesh Babu's self-proclaimed fans. Manoj has since been targeted with vile comments and personal attacks across his social media profiles. From asking the comedian to apologise for his comments on the ‘prince of Telugu Film industry’ and the ‘demi-god of Andhra’ on the same stage, to accusing him of using the actor’s name for personal mileage, the comedian faced angry rants from fans in defence of the superstar. Manoj was quick to issue an apology on his Facebook page on Friday. Manoj, in his open letter, said that his comments were made on the basis of the Tamil version of the movie and that they were only his personal opinion and were not meant to offend anyone. He said he had made those comments only as part of a particular show and that he didn’t want to target anyone personally.

Shah said that it was the TRS and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) which were engaged in "shadow boxing".
Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah on Saturday ruled out any alliance with the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) for the coming Assembly polls in the state and said that the TRS owed an explanation to the people for imposing additional expenditure by going for early elections. Replying to a query at a press conference, Shah, who was here to launch the party's election campaign, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's praise of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao during his speech in Parliament was in a different context and it cannot be interpreted as an understanding between the two parties. He denied reports that the BJP was hand-in-glove with the TRS and alleged that it was the TRS and Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) which were engaged in "shadow boxing". The BJP chief wanted to know why the TRS imposed early polls on the state when the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are slated to be held nine months later. Shah said Rao had initially supported Modi's idea of "one nation one election" but he was surprised when he suddenly changed his stand."Rao and TRS have forced a small state to bear expenditure of two elections. BJP believes that TRS has put an additional burden of crores of rupees on people to further its political interests," said the BJP chief. Shah said that the BJP was ready to give a tough fight to both the TRS and the opposition Congress in every constituency. He was confident that the BJP will emerge as a strong and decisive force in the state. Shah said there was no chance of the TRS getting a fresh mandate. "If the TRS government comes back to power, it will continue its politics of appeasement," he said slamming it for passing a resolution to provide 12% reservation to Muslims and sending it to the Centre for its approval. Claiming that the Modi government provided Rs.2.3 lakh crore to Telangana during the last four years against the Rs 15,000 crore given during the Congress rule, Shah said the BJP showed no discrimination towards any state but was opposed to the politics of appeasement.  Meanwhile, Shah also dared the TRS to name a Dalit as its chief ministerial candidate. Shah recalled that KCR had promised before the 2014 elections that a Dalit would be made the Chief Minister but when TRS won the elections, he took the post for himself."I want to ask KCR, will you fulfil this promise at least this time or will make your son as the Chief Minister?" said Shah. Referring to Congress President Rahul Gandhi's statement that the Congress will form the next government in Telangana, Shah said Rahul is daydreaming. He listed the states where Congress lost the elections since 2014. The BJP leader said people of Telangana have not forgotten the treatment meted out to former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao and former Chief Minister T Anjaiah by the Congress.  IANS inputs

Responding to KTR's statement asking why opposition parties were so keen on ‘dethroning’ the TRS, the Congress said that the students of OU would answer that question.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Chief Spokesperson Dr Sravan Dasoju on Saturday challenged state IT Minister K T Rama Rao, to visit Osmania University and ask the students of the institute for reasons to vote out the ruling-TRS government in the upcoming elections. Sravan was responding to KTR, who in a recent interview to a daily newspaper, asked why opposition parties were so keen on ‘dethroning’ Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. KTR was referring to the Congress, Telugu Desam Party, Telangana Jana Samithi and Communist Party of India forming a ‘Maha Kootami’ to take on TRS in the state. Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan on Saturday, Sravan hit back, saying, “Opposition parties need not answer KTR's question as even a 4-year-old child knows the answer on why TRS deserves to be voted out. Nearly 45 lakh youth of Telangana, who dreamt of getting a job in the state, would give a perfect answer to KTR's question. Similarly, the families of over 4,500 farmers who committed suicide will tell KTR as to why TRS government should not get re-elected.” Sravan dared KTR to visit Osmania University and ask the same question to students who had participated in the struggle for a separate state. The Congress leader also questioned KTR’s remarks, wherein he accused the opposition party of obstructing irrigation projects. Sravan said that the Congress party was ready for an open debate with KTR either at Telangana Bhavan or Gandhi Bhavan on the issue, adding that the opposition only objected to forced acquisition of several lakh acres of land belonging to poor Dalits by the TRS government in the name of irrigation projects. “The next election will be a 'Dharma Yuddham' (war for righteousness) between the TRS and Congress and people will certainly support the Congress party. Caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao's decision to advance the Assembly polls by nine months was itself an indication that TRS has accepted its imminent defeat. KCR dissolved the Assembly in haste after he sensed that the popularity of Congress party was on the rise across Telangana,” Sravan told reporters.

The police said that it was a specialised 40-member wing to deal with riots, riot-like situations, crowd control and related unrest.
In what is being touted as the first of its kind in the entire country, the Hyderabad City Police has launched a specialised wing to deal with riots, riot-like situations, crowd control, rescue and relief operations, and related unrest. The police said that the City Rapid Action Force (CRAF) was formed after selecting young personnel with 'quick reflexes, maturity and un-biased views'. "They have a distinctive uniform and have to act in zero response time. The force currently has 40 personnel (20 male and 20 female) who are specially trained officers of the rank of Police Constables. This force is equipped with non-lethal weapons for dispersing the crowd with minimum harm and losses," the city police said in a press release. The police said that the motto of the wing was 'Serving Humanity with Sensitive Policing' and they would always be kept ready to be deployed as and when the situation demands. "CRAF will be deployed only by the orders of the Commissioner of Police on specific duties only, and are normally not deployed for a long duration. This unit will be used to deal with communal violence, law and order duties, festival and election duties and agitations for carrying out prompt rescue and relief operations as and when required," the press release added. The CRAF was launched by Hyderabad Commissioner Anjani Kumar at his office in Hyderabad along with Addl Commissioner M Shiva Prasad, Addl CP (Crimes) Shika Goel and Addl CP (Law and Order) DS Chauhan, among other senior officers. A mock drill was also performed. In August this year, Hyderabad became the second city in the country to have a dedicated Disaster Response Force, after Mumbai. Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) KT Rama Rao launched the Enforcement Vigilance Disaster Management (EVDM) with 120 dedicated staff while vehicles will function under Greater Hyderbabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The DRF will reach out to the people during emergency situations such as flash floods, heavy rains, building collapses, fire mishaps and any other emergency situations.

This day, that year: How Hyderabad became a part of the union of India

September 17 will mark seventy years since the state of Hyderabad ruled by the Nizam surrendered to Indian forces.

September 17 marks seventy years of Hyderabad's union with India. It was on this day in 1948, thirteen months after India gained independence that the state of Hyderabad ruled by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, surrendered to the Indian forces. But in the run-up to D-day, India and Hyderabad were engaged in a game of wits, both sides expecting the other to blink first.  On November 29, 1947 the Government of India signed a standstill agreement with the Nizam of Hyderabad, under which it was decided to give one year's time for both sides to arrive at an amicable solution. The Nizam privately hoped that he could continue as an independent ruler. Plan B was to make Hyderabad part of Pakistan.  But the tide started turning against the Nizam in the corridors of power in New Delhi with the exit of Lord Mountbatten from India in June 1948. The new Governor General C Rajagopalachari's missive arrived very soon after he took over. He wrote to the Nizam asking him to ban the Razakar movement and let the Indian forces be stationed in Hyderabad to take charge of law and order.  The Razakars had transformed from being volunteers of the Majlis to a private militia of sorts and accused of crushing any dissent against the Nizam by the freedom fighters. The militia was controlled by a lawyer from Latur called Qasim Rizvi, who wielded enormous power even though he held no official position in the Nizam's court.  Qasim Rizvi. Image: Wikimedia Commons “The Government of India made the process official in August 1948, when it published a white paper listing out reasons why Hyderabad deserved tough action. It mentioned more than 300 incidents of atrocities allegedly committed since India's Independence by the Razakars,” says Mohammed Safiullah, historian.  In a parallel move, the military option was being given serious thought in New Delhi. The military commanders assessed that any resistance in Hyderabad could be overcome in a couple of weeks. The plan was to attack from two sides - the Sholapur-Hyderabad road and on the Bezwada (modern-day Vijayawada) to Hyderabad road. ‘Operation Polo’ was the code name given to the mission to add Hyderabad to the Indian Union, with the Indian forces proceeding towards the Deccan under the commandership of Major General JN Choudhuri. The police action, a euphemism for military action started on September 13, 1948. It had been conveyed to the Nizam that should he put up a fight, there will be unnecessary bloodshed. That did not prevent the Razakars from taking on the Indian forces.  It took four days for Indian forces to reach the outskirts of Hyderabad. A Congress committee headed by Pandit Sunderlal that was subsequently set up, estimated that between 27,000 and 40,000 people were killed in the four days between September 13 and September 17, 1948, making it one of the bloodiest face-offs in independent India.  KM Munshi, India's Agent General in Hyderabad, was constantly working the phones with New Delhi, keeping Sardar Patel informed about the situation on the ground. On the afternoon of September 17, a messenger from the palace brought to Munshi a personal note written by Osman Ali Khan.  “Will you see me today at King Kothi Palace at 4 pm?” it read.  By the time Osman Ali Khan met Munshi, he had secured the resignation of Laiq Ali, the Prime Minister of Hyderabad. “The vultures have resigned. I don't know what to do,” the Nizam reportedly told Munshi. India's representative told the Nizam that law and order in Hyderabad remained top priority after its liberation. Munshi next asked him to make a radio broadcast welcoming the police action and withdrawing his complaint before the UN Security Council. Safiullah points out that the Nizam had no clue how he was to record a radio address. “’Broadcast? How is that done,’ the Nizam asked. The speech was drafted by Munshi for Osman Ali Khan, proof that India had taken over Hyderabad and that the King had faded into the past,'' says Safiullah.  Mir Osman Ali Khan. Image: Wikimedia Commons That evening, the Nizam walked into the radio station for the first time in his life. With the Indian forces taking over his kingdom he had ruled since 1911, the Nizam's fall from grace was only too apparent. No red carpet was laid out for him at the radio station, no anthem was played. The Nizam rushed back to King Kothi palace after the broadcast.  A month later, Mir Osman Ali Khan issued a firman (edict) telling the people of Hyderabad that he was being treated well by the Government of India and he was not under any duress. For reasons best known to Osman Ali Khan, that was the only time he signed in English as ‘Nizam VII’.

Telangana polls: TRS alleges TDP using AP DGP's office for spying on them

TDP dismissed TRS’ allegations pointing out that Hyderabad was the common capital of both states for ten years.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Saturday triggered a row after they alleged that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) was misusing an office of the Andhra Pradesh DGP, which is situated in Hyderabad, to allegedly spy on them.  Addressing a press meet, TRS leaders urged Governor ESL Narasimhan and Telangana DGP M Mahender Reddy to take immediate action and ask officials of AP's Intelligence Department to leave the state, as it was headed for an election. TRS MP Balka Suman, party State Secretary Gattu Ramchander Rao and Government Whip P Rajeswar Reddy spoke to reporters in Hyderabad on Saturday and claimed that the head of AP's Intelligence Department, AB Venkateshwar Rao, was working out of the AP DGP Office in city. The TRS leaders alleged that intelligence was being collected on the political scenario in the state, to help the TDP.  “The AP government officials are being misused to submit intelligence reports to the TDP leadership over the political scenario in Telangana State. They have no role to play in the affairs of Telangana State and such acts should be dealt with stringently,” he added. TRS MP Balka Suman stated that TDP president and AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was resorting to backdoor politics and misusing the AP government machinery for his personal and political gains in the neighbouring State of Telangana. “Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu is using AP Intelligence and conducting a survey in Telangana. He sent a ‘Dongala Mutha’ to Telangana. We will lodge a complaint with the Governor and the DGP in this regard. If there is no response from the DGP, then TRS workers will chase away Venkateswara Rao,” the TRS leaders were quoted as saying.  "We suspect that the AP Chief Minister is trying to create political instability as well as transport moneybags to Telangana State using the intelligence authorities ahead of the State Assembly elections towards expenditure. They better stop such activities or if they are caught red-handed by us and people of the State, a befitting lesson will be taught to them,” Balka Suman told reporters. However, the TDP hit back and dismissed allegations by the TRS, pointing out that Hyderabad was the common capital of both states for ten years, as per the AP Reorganisation Act. Speaking to TNM, TDP Official Spokesperson Lanka Dinakar said that several institutions of the AP government continued to be situated in Hyderabad including the High Court. "What is wrong in it? Many bifurcation issues are pending and some of our departments have continued to function out of Hyderabad for the last four years and will continue for another six years if necessary," he said.  Dinakar also said that the TRS was raising the issue suddenly because it feared the TDP. "TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao himself said that TDP is nothing in the state. If that is the case, why are they so afraid now? This is only because they are clearly threatened and know that the TDP has the potential to oust TRS from the government in Telangana with the blessings of the people," he said. "Since the recent issue of a non-bailable warrant against several TDP leaders in a 2010 case pertaining to an agitation against the Babli Barrage on the Godavari river has come to light, it has become clear to the people of Telangana as to who has always fought for the state. This is what the TRS fears," he added.

‘Be careful’: Telangana cops had warned newly-weds a month before Pranay was murdered

"No complaints nor petitions were filed with the police, else we would have given protection to the couple," say police investigating the alleged caste killing.
When Pranay and Amrutha last visited the DSP office at Miryalaguda in the month of August to invite police officials to their wedding reception, they were given a warning to be careful. Officials say they were unaware that there was a credible threat against Pranay, a Dalit Christian who was murdered outside Jyothi Hospital in Miryalaguda in broad daylight on September 14. A suspected case of caste killing, Pranay had in January married Amrutha, who belongs to the Vaishya caste (a caste group categorised as Forward), against the wishes of both families. And while Pranav’s parents later accepted the marriage, even hosting a reception for the newly-weds on August 17, Amruta’s parents refused to do so. Police recall that they had summoned Amrutha’s father, Maruthi Rao, to the station in March this year to counsel him. They had questioned him to see whether he planned to resort to violence. "We had called him for counselling in March. He was weeping and said that he would not do such a thing, he told us that the reports about him issuing threats were wrong," said AV Ranganath, Superintendent of Police for Nalgonda to TNM. "No complaints nor petitions were filed with the police else we would have given police protection to the couple," he added. Pranay's family members had alleged that Maruthi Rao had in the months since the wedding issued threats against Pranay and his family. "These threats were issued to us through people known to us mutually, so there are no call recordings or any other proof to show that Rao had threatened us," said Amruthiya, Pranay's uncle. However, taking the threat seriously the family installed three CCTV cameras in their premises at Mutthireddy Kunta. Deputy Superintendent of Police for Nalgonda Srinivas, who is investigating the case, told TNM, "I had my suspicions about the father and had warned the couple in August. I suspected some untoward incident could happen as the issue was caste related. When they held the reception in August, we gave out notices and had deployed a few police officers at the venue so that nothing bad happens.” On Saturday, Amrutha had told the media that her father and uncle are allegedly behind the murder of her husband. However, police are tight-lipped about the role of her uncle in connection with the case. While Maruthi Rao was last seen on Friday heading towards Hyderabad, officials dismissed reports that he had paid Rs 10 lakh to a contract killer and that the suspects have been detained in Hyderabad. "We are building a watertight case and the investigation is progressing fast. We will hold a press meet in two to three days and reveal what exactly happened," said Ranganath. It should be noted that the investigating officer Ranganath was earlier a part of the team that wrongly accused a Dalit man, Satyam Babu, for the murder of 17-year-old pharmacy student Ayesha Meera from Andhra Pradesh who was killed on December 27, 2007. Ayesha’s body was found outside the toilet of the hostel in which she stayed. Satyam was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010 for rape and murder, but was later acquitted by the Hyderabad High Court in 2017, which also pulled up the officers who had investigated the case. "Ennisaralu Ee Goralu, Entamandimi Orugudamu (How many times will these atrocities take place, how many should be laid rest),” sang one youngster.
Cries of “Pranay Amar Rahe - Jai Bhim!” rang in the hour in the streets of Miryalaguda in Telangana on Sunday, as thousands from across the state flocked to the town for the funeral procession of Pranay Perumalla. The town bore witness to Dalit anger and sorrow, and hundreds of youngsters were part of the funeral procession that began from Pranay's home in Muthireddy Kunta and went around the town, before the burial took place at the Roman Catholic burial ground near his house.  24-year-old Pranay was murdered on September 14 outside Miryalaguda Jyothi Hospital’s by an unknown assailant in what is alleged to be a caste killing. His crime? Marrying Amrutha, a woman from a forward caste community. The police are still investigating the case. During the procession, Amrutha was seated on a tractor along with her husband's mortal remains, heading toward the burial ground accompanied by her in-laws and thousands of youth, who came to express their solidarity and demanding justice."Ennisaralu Ee Goralu, Entamandimi Orugudamu (How many times will these atrocities take place, how many should be laid rest),” sang one youngster, as his comrades lent their voice to the chorus. The funeral was attended by those from other faiths as well, who expressed their solidarity for the Dalit cause. The crowd, which consisted of a large number of youngsters, were also seen actively using social media and broadcasting proceedings with the help of Facebook lives. “Let the world see the ugly face of casteism,” said one youngster.  Dalits, human rights activists and students from Kakatiya and Osmania University were all in attendance, and so were the residents of Miryalaguda, who are yet to recover from the brazen murder. Apart from sorrow, there was anger, and a resolve to ensure that more such caste crimes do not take place.   “Irrespective of caste, people have been shaken by the brutal murder of Pranay. He will go down in the pages of the atrocious caste history of the country," said Gorati Venkanna, a poet, singer and activist."I never expected this to happen. I don't have words. I feel kind of empty inside," said Mohammad Ali, who was part of the procession and lived in the same neighbourhood as Pranay.  Sharat Naliganti, a student leader from Osmania University who was part of the procession called for a separate legislation for the protection of couples who marry inter-caste:  “We demand that there be a new legislation for the murders and assaults on inter-caste couples, who marry as per their choice,” he said.  Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) leader Krishna' Madiga, Professor Surepallly Sujata and heads of various students organisations leaders were also in attendance. Miryalaguda, a town which sees agrarian and trade activities, is situated in the Nalgonda district of Telangana. The locality where Pranay hailed from is home to those predominantly from the SC community. On Saturday morning, at various tea stalls, people could be seen huddling over newspapers, trying to make sense of the hate that led to Pranay's murder.  On Saturday, the morning after Pranay’s murder, various Dalit groups came together and declared a bandh across the town. Hundreds of Dalit youth took to the streets enforcing the bandh, shutting down shops, going from street to street on their bikes.

Names of 20 lakh voters deleted in four years in Telangana, Congress alleges

Alleging that as many as 70 lakh names in the electoral lists have been manipulated, the Congress said that the discrepancies were being ignored.

Accusing the Telangana government of trying to vitiate the upcoming Assembly polls by "manipulating voters lists", the Congress on Sunday demanded the Election Commissions (EC) intervention for verification and sanitisation of electoral rolls. Alleging that as many as 70 lakh names in the electoral lists have been manipulated, Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi wondered if the "contamination of the voter lists" was the reason behind the K. Chandrasekhar Rao government prematurely dissolving the Telangana Assembly in order to swing elections in their favour."Rao rushed to announce the dates for the Telangana Assembly elections and deliberately chose to ignore the numerous discrepancies in the voter lists which disenfranchise lakhs of eligible voters and completely erode the integrity of the elections, whenever they are conducted," Singhvi told the media in New Delhi."It is clear that the caretaker Chief Minister of Telangana is sacrificing the integrity of the elections for the sake of his petty political ambitions," he added. Singhvi said that an inquiry by the party has revealed that at least 30.13 lakh duplicate voters exist on the electoral rolls published by the Election Commission on September 10.  He also said that close to 20 lakh voters in Telangana have been deleted from the rolls between 2014 and 2018."When we raised the issue with the EC, we were told that the reduction (of 20 lakh voters) was largely due to voter migration from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh following the bifurcation. However, it has since been found that even in Andhra Pradesh, there has been a reduction of close to 17 lakh voters. If in fact, a migration of such a large number had taken place, shouldn't there have been a corresponding increase in the number of voters in Andhra Pradesh?" asked Singhvi.  Pointing out further discrepancies in the electoral rolls, the Congress leader claimed that close to 18 lakh names featured in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana electoral rolls.  He asserted that the elections held on the basis of the "deeply and deliberately flawed and inaccurate" voter lists would undermine the entire process and lead to a distorted mandate. "By dissolving the Assembly early, Rao has interfered with the process whereby these discrepancies and inaccuracies would have been corrected. After publishing the revised electoral roll on September 10, the public and other political parties have been given a mere four weeks to identify and highlight these issues. This is a travesty," said Singhvi, urging the EC to intervene in the strongest possible manner.

The ex-legislator denied all allegations, and said that he had never heard of Amrutha or Pranay.
Amrutha Varshini, the wife of Pranay Perumalla, who was hacked to death in a case of caste killing on Friday in Telangana's Miryalguda town, has accused a former MLA of the caretaker Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the state of aiding her father in the murder. Speaking to local media, Amrutha said, “Nakrekal MLA Vemula Veeresham called us to meet him, but Pranay and I were scared because we had seen news that he was involved in some criminal cases in Nalgonda itself. He also got a case booked against my father-in-law. There was no name of the complainant but the police harassed him for two days. They also threatened to file cases against Pranay. That was when we went to IG Stephen Ravindra, who informed other senior police officers.""My father has local political contacts. The only person who can hire a contract killer, as far as I know, is Veeresham. He only must have hired him and paid them the money.  My uncle Bharath Kumar and my father’s friend Gudur Seenu are also involved in this pre-planned murder. I want each of them to be severely punished," she added. The legislator denied the allegations. “I never met or called Pranay or his father Balaswamy, nor forced any false cases against at Ketheypally police station. I have seen and heard of Amrutha Varshini and Pranay for the first time on television,” he told the New Indian Express. Activists demanded the arrest of the former legislator as Amrutha named him on record and stated that she suspected his involvement. In a separate development, a photo of Amrutha's father and main accused T Maruthi Rao, standing with caretaker minister G Jagadishwar Reddy at a function, went viral on social media on Sunday.   According to media reports, the police have taken Maruthi Rao, his brother T Shravan and few others into custody, but are yet to make the arrests official. A large number of people, including leaders of Dalit organisations, attended the funeral of Pranay Kumar, held at a church in Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district, about 150 km from Hyderabad. The funeral procession began after Pranay's brother arrived from Ukraine. The 24-year-old was hacked to death by an unknown assailant when he was coming out of a hospital with Amrutha, who is three months pregnant. The couple had married six months ago despite strong opposition from Amrutha's parents. The murder has evoked public outrage. The town on Saturday observed shutdown on a call by Dalit groups. On Sunday, Telangana IT Minister K T Rama Rao on Sunday condemned Pranay's murder. He said the murder came as a rude shock. "Dismayed and anguished on how deep rooted casteism is," he tweeted. KTR, the son of caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, promised that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be punished. Maruthi Rao allegedly paid Rs 10 lakh to the hired killer. He reportedly told police that 'honour' is more important for him than his daughter.  IANS inputs

The Golconda police in Hyderabad arrested a 29-year-man for sexually assaulting a 4-year-old at a private school in the old city area on Sunday, after the crime had triggered massive protests last week. The man has been identified as Mohammed Geelani, a supervisor at the school. Police said that the accused was mainly hired for looking after primary school students at the institute. Meanwhile, medical tests conducted at a government-run hospital in the city also confirmed that the assault took place. The incident took place when the accused lured the girl with a chocolate, during the interval. The accused then took her to an isolated area and sexually abused her, the police said. According to media reports, some locals pelted stones on the empty buses that were parked in the school premises, while others vandalised some furniture and other property belonging to the institute.  As police officers were also injured in the melee, around 17 people were detained by the police on Sunday under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. They were later let off after a strict warning. Karwan MLA Kausar Mohiuddin who visited the school where the crime took place, met with the girl’s parents on Sunday to enquire about her health and assured them of all possible support. Doctors said that the child is out of danger and her health was improving under medical supervision. A case has been registered under Section 376 (Rape) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

Amrutha said the last time her father asked her to get an abortion was on Wednesday, two days before Pranay’s brutal murder.
Amrutha Varshini, wife of Pranay Perumalla, who was hacked to death in a case of caste killing on Friday in Telangana’s Miryalaguda town, said that her father repeatedly pressured her to terminate her pregnancy. Speaking to local media, Amrutha said, “I am a single child and ever since I married Pranay in January this year, my father rarely spoke to me. When he did, he would only call and ask me to return home or terminate the pregnancy.” She also said that the last time he asked her to get an abortion was on Wednesday, two days before the gruesome murder. “He said ‘you terminate the pregnancy and live without children for three years and I’ll accept the marriage’. I told him that I won’t kill my baby irrespective of what he feels. I think he planned this because he didn’t want the baby to be a problem after they killed Pranay, so that they could take me back easily,” Amrutha said. “If I have a reason to live and meaning to life now, it is only my baby. I will see Pranay in the child and live the rest of my life. I will raise our child,” she added as she broke down. Speaking about the attack, Amrutha said, “We knew what kind of people my parents were and we did fear that they may beat Pranay and drag me away or harm us in some way, but we never thought they would do it in full public view.” “All those who are involved should be punished. It is not enough if they go to jail, there they will be alive. They should die in a way that they killed Pranay, so that such caste killings never happen again. Pranay’s dream was that casteism should not exist and I will fight for his dream,” she added. 23-year-old Pranay was hacked to death by a hired killer in a case of caste killing when he was coming out of hospital with Amrutha after a regular pregnancy check-up. The couple had married in January this year despite strong opposition from Amrutha’s parents. A large number of people, including leaders of Dalit organisations, attended Pranay’s funeral on Sunday held at a church in Miryalaguda in Nalgonda district, about 150 km from Hyderabad. The funeral procession began after Pranay’s brother arrived from Ukraine. The murder has evoked public outrage, even as the police have reportedly detained Amrutha’s father Maruthi Rao and her uncle Shravan Kumar among others. Maruthi Rao allegedly paid Rs 10 lakh to the hired killer. Calling her father a devil, Amrutha vowed never to go back to her parents, saying she would live with Pranay’s parents.    With IANS inputs

There is an eerie silence at Muthireddy Kunta in Miryalaguda, as family members, friends, neighbours and activists poured in to the house of Pranay Kumar, a Telangana man who was hacked to death on Friday, in a case of caste killing. A large tent had been set up outside the house, even as Pranay's wife, Amrutha Varshini and his parents, are seated at the entrance.   24-year-old Pranay was hacked to death allegedly by a hired killer when he was coming out of a hospital with Amrutha after a regular pregnancy check-up. Pranay, a Dalit of the Mala caste had married Amrutha, a Vaishya (a caste group categorised as Forward) in January despite strong opposition from Amrutha's parents. The coldblooded caste killing in broad daylight has evoked public outrage. It has been less than a day since Pranay’s funeral procession saw thousands of people from different walks of life, who shouted slogans of “Pranay Amar Rahe" and "Jai Bhim!”. He was laid to rest at a local burial ground following a ceremony in church. Amrutha, who has been speaking to the media since her husband's murder, sat quietly, looking frail. Her father, Maruthi Rao, is the main accused, and she has already decided that she will stay with Pranay's family and vowed to never return to the place she once called home. "We will take care of her. We can’t leave her like that and she wants to be with us. If we deny her this, where will she go? We will take care of her baby as well and we will continue to fight legally. We want to make sure that the culprits are punished and justice is meted out," Pranay's mother, Hemalatha, says. She also says that the police have told them that they could still be under threat, and advised them to move in groups and be cautious and inform the local police of any suspicious activity. "There is uncertainty about our future and we are afraid, but we will never leave her. She will be with us," Hemalatha adds. Suspicion lingers in the air. This reporter had to prove his identity to the family before they opened up.  Pranay's father, Balakrishna, is also in an emotionally fragile state. While he had initially opposed the relationship when the couple had come forward, he says that he has since come to love Amrutha. "I have two sons and I considered Amrutha as my own daughter. She was innocent when she first came into the house, but we never had any discomfort. She will stay with us," he says. "I adopted her almost, as my own daughter. At least seeing that, they should have left my son," he adds, before breaking down.   Meanwhile, social activist Vimalakka reaches the house and speaks to the family members and consoles them. The mood is grim and reflects solidarity. Speaking to reporters after her meeting, Vimalakka said, "It is an inhuman act. The two of them were a beautiful symbol of love. If you didn't like it, you could just leave them alone, but instead separating them in this way is a heinous crime. it only shows the inhuman face of caste. We must all collectively fight this." The police have reportedly detained Amrutha's father Maruthi Rao, her uncle Shravan Kumar and few others in the case. Maruthi Rao allegedly paid Rs 10 lakh to the hired killer. He reportedly told the police that the 'honour' of his caste was more important for him than his daughter.

Seven women activists from Hyderabad have moved Hyderabad High Court questioning the inaction of the Telangana government in constituting a committee to look into the complaints of sexual exploitation of women artistes in the Telugu film industry. A petition was filed in the court by P Sandhya of the Progressive Women Organisation, journalist K Sajaya, cultural activist PA Devi, social activists Kondaveeti Satyavati, Makkapati Sumitra and researchers Dr ARV Suneetha and Tejaswini Madhabhushi. The petitioners have requested the High Court to issue a directive to the Telangana government that a high-level committee comprising of officials from department of women, labour and home, women’s rights activists, lawyers and members of the film fraternity be constituted to recommend measures to ensure the safety and dignity of artistes in the film industry. The petitioners state that soon after the news of the protests by actress Sri Reddy alleging sexual harassment by top directors and actors in the industry, they had made a representation to the Cinematography Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav in April to constitute a committee to look into the complaints of alleged harassment. They met the minister thrice after every fresh development in the case. Following the representation, the minister called for a consultation to look into the matter and suggest suitable measures and recommendations. A committee headed by the chairperson of the film development corporation was also proposed. After the proposal was made, the petitioners also met the chairperson of the TFDC who asked them to submit a representation outlining the issues to be addressed. The representation included ten points that focussed mainly on improving the condition of women at workplaces. The State Commission of Women, too, after receiving a petition from the activists, directed the government to submit a report on the action taken. “But despite the responses and statements made to the media, no institutional mechanism to address work place harassment have been ensued till date (sic),” the petition reads. The petitioners have also pointed out the need to impose strict regulation on middlemen who mediate between artistes and production houses and thus reduce the scope for sexual exploitation. The petition also comments on the sexual harassment cell that has been constituted in the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce. “Barring two sentences about whom to complain, the website has no other details on the procedures or even the members of the committee,” the petitioners allege. Sri Reddy had created a sensation by stripping in protest outside the office of Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce in Hyderabad on April 7 against the 'casting couch'– a euphemism for sexual harassment – in Tollywood. She also questioned the Telangana government and MAA (Movie Artist Association) on the absence of a Committee Against Sexual Harassment. After her protests, a lot of women artistes from the lower rungs of the industry spoke about the alleged harassment they faced in the industry and how they were forced to enter into sexual transactions after being promised jobs and offers in films.

‘Casteism killed Pranay, we must uproot caste’: 21-year-old Amrutha vows to fight

Caste Killing
Pranay was murdered in broad daylight on September 14, and his wife, Amrutha, has alleged that her father and uncle masterminded the crime.
A pall of gloom has descended over Muthireddy Kunta in Telangana’s Miryalaguda. The streets which resonated with the slogans of ‘Jai Bhim’ and ‘Johar Pranay’ on Sunday evening now were shrouded in silence. The streets leading to Pranay’s house are the quietest of all, except for a few neighbours standing around speaking in low voices. Several well-wishers and friends continue to visit his residence and pay their respects to the large photo of the 24-year-old hung inside the house. It has been three days since the brutal murder of Pranay Perumalla Kumar, a Dalit from Miryalaguda, who was hacked to death in broad daylight on Friday, for marrying Amrutha Varshini, a Vaishya (a caste group categorised as Forward). Amrutha sits with her in-laws, Hemalatha and Balaswamy, also known as Balakrishna, near Pranay’s portrait. While Amrutha’s in-laws look devastated, she maintains a brave face. She occasionally breaks down, but regains her composure quickly. The 21-year-old has accused her own father and uncle of masterminding the murder. "How can someone be killed for loving and marrying as per their choice? Who gave him (her father) the right to kill Pranay?" she asks, talking to TNM. "We can uproot caste system only through inter-caste marriages and by encouraging such marriages. It should happen the way BR Ambedkar envisioned it and we must challenge the brutal and inhuman caste system.” Amrutha has reiterated time and again that she will ensure Pranay gets justice. "I will fight till the end to get justice for Pranay. He always said that caste differences among people should end and casteism should go. There should never be a situation where a person faces difficulties because of their caste. That is what I will fight for now," she says. Pranay was hacked to death on September 14 as the couple left a hospital where Amrutha had a routine consultation with her gynaecologist. She is five months pregnant with their baby. The horrific murder which took place in broad daylight sparked anger across the state. Despite this, there has however been a section of people on social media who have attempted to justify the murder, with some even saying that Pranay had 'lured' Amrutha, because her father was rich.   Responding to this, Amrutha says, "Even though the brutal murder was caught on camera and went viral, there are several people who are justifying it. How can human beings make such comments? This only shows that there are many terrible people in society like my father, who continue to support his casteist intentions.""The reason for this murder is only casteism. When such kinds of murders take place, the legal system is weak and it may take up to 5 to 10 years to get justice. I demand that the punishment should be strong and swift. Separate fast track courts must be established to tackle such cases," she adds. Amrutha has already expressed her wish to stay with Pranay's family and has vowed never to go back to her parents. Soon after her husband’s murder, Amrutha told a local media outlet between tears, “If I have a reason to live and meaning to life now, it is only my baby. I will see Pranay in the child and live the rest of my life. I will raise our child.” The police have reportedly detained Amrutha's father Maruthi Rao, her uncle Shravan Kumar and a few others in the case. Maruthi Rao allegedly paid Rs 10 lakh to the hired killer and the police are expected to hold a press meet soon, to reveal further details about the investigation.  Read: 'Amrutha is our daughter, will stay with us': Caste crime victim Pranay's parents

Hyderabad airport to introduce facial recognition soon at security checkpoints

With this system, passengers won’t need to furnish their travel documents, ID proof and boarding pass at checkpoints, claim Hyd airport authorities.

By the year-end, Hyderabad airport plans to introduce face-recognition as a mechanism to ease the passenger traffic. With this system, passengers won’t need to furnish their travel documents, ID proof and boarding pass at multiple checkpoints, claim Hyderabad airport authorities. The authorities said that they have tested the mechanism with their staff three months ago and following its success, they have approached the regulatory authorities for their approval, which they are likely to get by year-end. Authorities said that they will set up 3-D cameras at three levels of checkpoints, where passengers are required to furnish their documents to prove that they are bona fide passengers.   GHIAL—GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited claims that this is the first time that such a technology would be introduced in India. According to officials, this system will be first introduced to domestic passengers and later extended to international passengers.  Officials said that they have received numerous complaints where passengers were being forced to wait at check-in counters and other points because the words on their travel documents would be smudged or invisible. This pushed them to go for such a technology, which is paperless and non-intrusive. An official from the GHIAL said, “We will have high-end 3-D cameras with facial-recognition tool. The passenger just needs to look at them. As a first step, they have to enrol with us and their data gets registered in our system. For the next travel, they need not furnish their IDs at the entrance.” “This is to avoid intrusion of security personnel. Out of the three entry points, one of them will be used for this purpose,” he said. He further added that these cameras will be positioned at other touch points like security and boarding gate. “The passenger will no longer need to furnish their boarding pass and show their identity card. The cameras will pull details of them from the system automatically. We hope that this will ease the traffic at the airport.” It must be recalled that the GHIAL has already introduced barcode/QR code based e-boarding for end-to-end stamp-less, seamless, paperless journey for domestic passengers.

24-year-old Pranay was hacked to death in broad daylight on Friday in Miryalguda.
The Miryalguda police in Telangana’s Nalgonda district, have booked three people for the caste killing of Pranay Perumlla Kumar. 24-year-old Pranay, a Dalit Christian, was hacked to death in broad daylight on Friday, for marrying Amrutha Varshini, a Vaishya (a caste group categorised as Forward).  The accused have been identified as Amurtha’s father Maruthi Rao and uncle Sravan Kumar, along with ‘one other’, presumably, the unidentified assailant. Pranay was murdered, allegedly by a hired killer, when he was coming out of hospital with his wife, Amrutha, after a pregnancy check-up. The couple had married in January this year despite strong opposition from Amrutha’s parents. The police registered a case based on a complaint that was filed at 2:15 pm on Friday by 53-year-old Perumalla Balaswamy, Pranay’s father, within hours after his murder. The accused have been booked under sections 302 (Murder), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 120b (Party to a criminal conspiracy) read with 109 (Abetment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 3(2)(v) of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The FIR, while detailing the contents of the complaint, states that Pranay and Amrutha knew each other since Class 10. However, Pranay's father told the police, that Amrutha was pursuing Pranay and even threatened to kill herself if she was not accepted by him. “On coming to know of the same, Maruthi Rao warned Pranay. Since then, Pranay maintained distance with Amrutha, but she did not leave him and said that if he did not love her, she would die. His son accepted her proposal and fell in love with her. On knowing the same, Maruthi Rao stopped the studies of his daughter and kept her at home,” the FIR states. The FIR says that the couple later left to Hyderabad and married at Arya Samaj, following which Maruthi Rao approached the police with kidnap complaint. “Amrutha told the police that they willingly got married and since they were majors, the police sent the couple back. Maruthi Rao sent elders to coninvce Amrutha, but she refused and stayed in Pranay’s house,” the FIR said. The police also detailed the attack on Pranay that led to his killing, stating that the accused left the knife at the crime scene, leaving the 24-year-old to die on the spot after sustaining injuries on his head and neck.   While Maruthi Rao and Sravan were detained, the police is yet to make the official announcement of the arrest. Maruthi Rao allegedly paid Rs 10 lakh to the hired killer. A large number of people, including leaders of Dalit organisations, attended Pranay’s funeral on Sunday held in Miryalaguda as this caste-based killing sparked wide outrage across Telangana. Maruthi Rao, a realtor and businessman, is said to be very influential in Miryalaguda town of Nalgonda district, with Amrutha herself saying that her father had a lot of political connections. “He said ‘you terminate the pregnancy and live without children for three years and I’ll accept the marriage’. I told him that I won’t kill my baby irrespective of what he feels. I think he planned this because he didn’t want the baby to be a problem after they killed Pranay, so that they could take me back easily,” Amrutha told a local media outlet earlier.   Read: ‘Casteism killed Pranay, we must uproot caste’: 21-year-old Amrutha vows to fight 'Amrutha is our daughter, will stay with us': Caste crime victim Pranay's parents
