JNU sedition row created by BJP to dilute Rohith Vemula's suicide: Ex-ABVP member

Controversy
"The controversy was created by the BJP to dilute the suicide of Rohith Vemula, who was forced to end his life," Pradeep Narwal said.
A former ABVP member has said the chargesheet filed against the 10 JNU students, including Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, is the brainchild of BJP and claimed that some ABVP members had themselves raised "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan on the JNU campus in 2016 which led to the slapping of sedition charges. Pradeep Narwal, who left the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) after the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) sedition row in 2016, told IANS that the entire issue is politically-motivated and has been raised to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming general election. The entire controversy was fomented by the ABVP in 2016 to divert the attention from the University of Hyderabad student Rohith Vemula's suicide."This was a media trial, then, and this is a media trial, now. The controversy was created by the BJP to dilute the suicide of Rohith Vemula, who was forced to end his life by Bandaru Dattatreya (then Labour Minister from Telangana), who escalated the matter to the HRD Ministry, while the matter should have been dealt with at the Vice Chancellor level," Narwal said.  He also suggested that certain members of the ABVP and its sympathisers were also seen among the students in the video grab which captured "Pakistan Zindabad" slogan -- the slogan purported to be the heart of the sedition charge in the chargesheet -- being raised."Hence, either the video is doctored, as I have been saying all along, or the chargesheet should also be filed against those ABVP members," he said, adding that he was frequently threatened and abused by the ABVP members for days after his leaving the group.  Vemula committed suicide three years back on this day in his room on the University of Hyderabad campus.  In his suicide note, he had narrated how he was being victimised for coming from a low caste and how casteism was rife in the university. His death sent thousands of university students across India into agitation, who waged several protests against the "institutional discrimination" at places of higher education.  Narwal, who joined the Congress six months back, said the chargesheet has been filed to create a "narrative" before the general election on the basis of "doctored videos". "If due process is not followed in this case, it would be the biggest fraud on democracy," he said.  The Delhi Police on Monday filed a chargesheet naming Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven Kashmiri students, mentioning that anti-national slogans were raised by them at an event held at Sabarmati Dhaba on the JNU campus in February 2016.  The police have cited video footage made by ABVP members, among others, as evidence.

The victims realized that they had been cheated after they approached the office of the Hyderabad Metro with fake appointment orders.
The Uppal Police in Hyderabad on Thursday arrested two people for allegedly duping 161 people including several unemployed youth under the guise of providing jobs in the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL). The accused were identified as Velagapudi Rama Krishna and Chilla Mahalakshmi. Two others, Gaddam Sridhar Reddy and Bandaru Laxman Rao were said to be absconding. In a press release, the Rachakonda police said, “The accused, Ramakrishna, is a native of Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh and had migrated to Hyderabad long ago. He worked as a Public Relation Officer in several sectors and cheated unemployed youth in Telangana and Andhra by collecting a huge amount from them. 15 cases were registered against him in different police stations across the Telugu states.” “In 2017, he got acquainted to Mahalakshmi and later with the other two accused, who colluded and hatched a plan,” the release added. The police said that they would lure unemployed youth with an offer to provide jobs with the HMRL and collect a large amount from them and then transfer the money into one of their accounts, before sharing it among themselves. “When the victims later started demanding their jobs, the accused created a fake email ID and fake appointment orders and sent the same to the candidates. However, when the victims approached the office of the Metro Rail, they realized that they had been cheated,” the police said. Investigation officials seized one car, two cell phones, fake order copies of 161 ‘candidates’ and around Rs 70,000 in cash from the possession of the accused. The Hyderabad Metro Rail was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2017, who flagged off a stretch between Nagole and Ameerpet. Since then the stretch from LB Nagar to Ameerpet has also been opened. Presently, work is being undertaken on metro stretch between Ameerpet and Hitec City, which is expected to be opened for the public soon.

Accident
Preliminary examination by the police has revealed that the blast was a gas cylinder explosion.
One person was killed and nine others, including two children, were injured in a suspected cooking gas cylinder explosion in Hyderabad's Kapra area on Friday. The explosion took place at around 7.30 am at a residential building that belonged to Mohanlal Chand, who owns a gold jewellery store. The two-floored building was destroyed in the explosion and the debris has damaged the adjoining buildings, which included a private hospital. Locals said that they could hear the loud explosion nearly 500 meters away. According to reports, Mohanlal was flung out of his home during the explosion and was grievously injured. His condition has reportedly been deteriorating. Suresh, a lab technician, working in New Life Line Hospital and others immediately rushed to his help and cleared the debris and alerted police. One person identified as Ravi, who was passing by the house to open his hair cutting saloon for the day, was hit by a huge boulder. He was rushed to the New Life Line Hospital located nearby, but he succumbed to his injuries. While three other people are currently availing treatment at New Life Line Hospital, others have been shifted to other hospitals as their conditions remain critical. Recalling the incident, Suresh, said, "We were asleep in the hospital and suddenly we heard a loud explosion which almost deafened us. We immediately ran out of the hospital to check what happened, we couldn't see anything; there was just dust everywhere because the walls had collapsed. We found Mohanlal under the debris." Locals alleged that police arrived almost an hour after they were alerted. Along with the local police, the state Disaster Response Force and a dog squad were pressed into action to investigate the reason for the explosion. Preliminary examination by the police revealed that the blast was a gas cylinder explosion. A police officer, R Saidulu said, "For now it looks like the explosion was a result of the gas cylinder. A full investigation is underway. We can find the reason for the blast only after a thorough investigation." Though police claim that it is a gas cylinder explosion, locals are not convinced. Raju, a neighbour, whose mother has been injured in the blast, said, "There were no flames in the explosion. We suspect that it was a bomb explosion." The Central team of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have cleared the debris which was strewn across the main road and neighbourhood.

Vanteru, who went up against Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, was all praise for the TRS chief after he was inducted to the party by KTR.
In a boost to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Congress leader Vanteru Pratap Reddy, who had contested against Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao for the Gajwel constituency in December last year, defected to the ruling party in the state on Friday. Vanteru was inducted into the TRS in the presence of TRS Working President KT Rama Rao and Medak MP Kotha Prabhakar Reddy, besides other senior leaders. KTR garlanded him with a TRS scarf amid cheers from several supporters of the leader from Gajwel who had gathered at Telangana Bhavan, the headquarters of the party in Hyderabad. Speaking at the event, Vanteru said, "KCR has swept the state in December because his welfare schemes went directly to the people, whether it was the Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bhima or the projects supplying water. This was reflected in the votes that he received.""I worked for the farmers in Gajwel constituency, have faced lathi charges and even gone to jail for them. Despite this, the farmers voted for the CM. Therefore, I felt that maybe the decision I took was wrong because the people of Gajwel had spoken. That's why I decided to join the TRS," he added. Vanteru also said that he was invited repeatedly at many points in the past but he had refused. However, he added that he had reconsidered his decision and he would work for the party and perform whatever duties were assigned to him. In the run up to the polls, Vanteru had alleged that the police had been repeatedly harassing and foisting cases against him on the directions of the CM. On November 27, tension prevailed at Pratap Reddy’s residence in Kompally in Hyderabad, after he threatened self-immolation alleging police harassment. He even sat on a hunger strike at the Gajwel Returning Officer’s office, appealing that the Election Commission step up their vigil and curb the liquor flow and bribery by the TRS. He also had alleged threat to his life. However, on Friday, ahead of his induction, Vanteru spoke to local reporters and was all praise for KCR's welfare schemes and said he was joining the TRS on KTR's invite. Sources say that he could be given an MLC seat or made the chairman of a corporation in the state. Speaking after inducting Vanteru, KTR said, "What Pratap said is true. We have asked him repeatedly over the last 10 years and he has finally joined us. We extend him a warm welcome." KTR also highlighted various development projects taken up by KCR in Gajwel constituency.   "We should repeat the performance of the Assembly elections in the Lok Sabha election. We should win 16 out of the 17 seats in Telangana for sure," KTR said. The TRS already has an understanding to leave the Hyderabad MP seat vacant for AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi. He also lashed out at the Congress and BJP and said that all their attempts to dethrone the TRS had failed."Congress and BJP are ruining the country. A Federal Front should come up and it will strengthen the states. We have already started work on this. Even if Congress and BJP join hands, they cannot get a majority in the Parliament," he said, emphasising that regional parties would play a crucial role in 2019. He also lashed out at Andhra Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and spoke about his meeting with Jagan. “We were never against Andhra’s development. We may have been divided as states, but we are always been united as people. There might have been statements made during the agitation for a separate state, but since bifurcation, our stand has been clear,” KTR said. Vanteru Pratap Reddy is a local strongman in Gajwel and in 2014, despite being in the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), a party considered against the formation of Telangana, Vanteru got 34.48% of the vote share against the Chief Minister's 44.42%. The Congress leader's defection is similar to that of former Gajwel MLA Narsa Reddy, who had lost on a Congress ticket and defected to the TRS in 2014. However, last year, ahead of the elections, he had returned to the Congress fold and put his weight behind Pratap Reddy. Sidelining Harish Rao or wiping out opposition? It was KCR's nephew and Siddipet MLA T Harish Rao who campaigned for the TRS chief and ensured his victory in Gajwel. The former Irrigation Minister of Telangana was tasked with ensuring a win for the party in several constituencies but Siddipet and Gajwel were a crucial part of it. On Friday, he was absent from the stage during Vanteru’s induction, which is being seen by some observers as a double whammy for Harish Rao, as just last month KCR appointed his son, KTR, as the Working President of the TRS. Harish has been in the party since its inception, always accompanying KCR, while KTR returned from the United States during the Telangana movement and rose swiftly through the TRS ranks. This has often triggered speculation that all is not well between the first family of the TRS and with Vanteru's induction, it remains to be seen if the suspected rift widens further, as it could be interpreted as a move to sideline Harish further. However, others say that the move could just be aimed at wiping out opposition in KCR’s home ground. Speaking to TNM, senior journalist and political analyst K Nageshwar said, “To sideline Harish Rao, KCR does not need Vanteru. If KCR wants to sideline someone in the party, he can do it. No one will question him. Harish Rao is not indispensable in Gajwel. Anyone can take care of the constituency.” “He wants to gather as much support as he can and doesn’t want any opposition. This is true not only in Gajwel, but everywhere in the state. Tomorrow, if Congress leader Revanth Reddy (considered a bitter critic) wants to join also, KCR will take him,” Nageshwar quips.

KCR, who took over as Chief Minister for a second term in December, directed the officers concerned to expedite and speed up the works on irrigation projects.
Telangana will spend about Rs 1.17 lakh crore during the next five years to complete all projects to irrigate 1.25 crore acres, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said on Friday. Out of estimated cost of Rs 2.25 lakh crore for all irrigation projects, the state has already spent Rs 77,777 crore. "In addition to this, for land purchase, compensatory afforestation and for rehabilitation and resettlement packages another Rs 22,000 crore has been spent. The total expenditure as of now is Rs. 99,643 crore," he told a review meeting with officials on irrigation projects."By the end of March this year it is estimated that another Rs 7,000 crore expenditure would be incurred. With this, by the end of March, the expenditure would touch Rs 1.07 lakh crore," a statement from Chief Minister's office quoted him as saying. Rao, who took over as Chief Minister for a second term in December, directed the officers concerned to expedite and speed up the works on irrigation projects. In addition to irrigation projects in Godavari and Krishna basin, Mission Kakatiya will help the state achieve the target of irrigating 1.25 crore acres. “In the erstwhile rule of united Andhra Pradesh, the irrigation projects of former Adilabad district were a joke. Except for seeking votes during elections on the name of projects, they never constructed projects and gave water. The history of Adilabad should be changed by providing adequate water in abundance. A comprehensive strategy should be evolved to provide water to the erstwhile Adilabad district,” the CM said. KCR, as Rao is popularly known, made it clear that there is no greater priority than providing water for irrigation for the farmers. He said there was no dearth of funds for construction of projects. Chief Advisor Rajiv Sharma, Chief Secretary SK Joshi, Secretary to CM Smitha Sabharwal, Engineer-in-Chief Muralidhar, OSD to CM Sridhar Deshpande, CEs Hari Ram, Shankar, Srinivas Reddy, SEs Vishnu Prasad, Venu, EE Ramakrishna, MLC Farooq Hussain and others participated in the review meeting.   IANS inputs

Vikramarka, who has been representing Madhira constituency since 2009, served as the Deputy Speaker of undivided Andhra Pradesh Assembly between 2011 and 2014.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Friday appointed Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka as the leader of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Telangana. He took this decision a day after CLP passed a resolution authorizing the party President to appoint the CLP leader. Vikramarka, a leader from Scheduled Castes, was re-elected from Madhira constituency in Khammam district in December election. Currently Working President of party's Telangana unit, 57-year-old Vikramarka will also become the leader of opposition in the state Assembly. With 19 members in 119-member Assembly, Congress is the main opposition party. Vikramarka, who has been representing Madhira constituency since 2009, served as the Deputy Speaker of undivided Andhra Pradesh Assembly between 2011 and 2014. The move has upset other contenders for the post including Sangareddy MLA Turupu Jayaprakash Reddy alias Jagga Reddy, who said that lobbyists who had influence in New Delhi were bagging the posts within the party, instead of those who were working on the ground in Telangana. During the CLP meeting on Thursday, AICC observer K C Venugopal had sought opinion of the newly-elected MLAs to elect the leader. However, the meeting, which was also attended by AICC Secretary in-charge of party affairs in the state, R C Khuntia left the decision to Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, Governor ESL Narasimhan will address the House on January 19. A day later, the House will introduce the motion of thanks to the Governor's address and adopt the same. While the Congress has 19 MLAs, in a major blow to the party in Telangana last month, four out of six remaining MLCs from the party defected to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), after it swept the Assembly elections in the state. The four MLCs, led by Akula Lalitha (who had contested the Armoor seat on a Congress ticket) met Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and shifted their loyalties. This has left the Congress with only two MLCs —  Shabbir Ali and Ponguleti Sudhakar — whose term will end in March this year.   IANS inputs

KCR has floated the idea of a non-Congress and non-BJP Federal Front and said that a consortium of regional parties would emerge in the country soon.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will be one of the prominent regional leaders who will be skipping the mega anti-BJP rally in Kolkata being organized by his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee, as the Congress was also invited to the event. On Friday, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief called up Mamata, who heads the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and explained to her that he would not share the stage with Congress leaders. He also stated that the first Assembly session of his state was presently underway, with the Governor’s address scheduled for Saturday. KCR has floated the idea of a non-Congress and non-BJP Federal Front and said that a consortium of regional parties would emerge in the country soon. Meanwhile, arrangements at the historic Brigade Parade ground in Kolkata were underway for the event, that would virtually kick-start the opposition's campaign ahead of the upcoming general election. Convened by Mamata Banerjee, who is aiming to project herself as the face of the opposition, the rally at noon is being attended by the who's who of Indian politics -- a former prime minister, several current and former chief ministers and stalwarts from various political outfits from across the country. Banerjee has arranged for a tea party for her guests at 4 pm on Saturday after the rally gets over. The venue is Soujanya, a new state government guest house, modelled after New Delhi's Hyderabad House. The leaders are likely to address the media about their deliberations post tea party. On Friday itself, Banerjee called on former prime minister and Janata Dal (Secular) national president H.D. Deve Gowda, Nationalist Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who have been lodged in different hotels. While Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi have given the rally a miss, they have deputed senior party functionary and leader of the party in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress President on his part sent a message to Mamata Banerjee on Friday extending his support to the event hoping that the "show of unity" will send a powerful message of "a united India together" for ideas that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were intent on destroying. Over 20 leaders from more than ten parties are attending the rally and the tea party. Among them are Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Telugu Desam chief Chandrababu Naidu, DMK head M.K. Stalin, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah (both National Conference). Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Ajit Singh and Jayant Chowdhury (both RLD), former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Gegong Apang, Hemant Soren of JMM, Patidar movement leader Hardik Patel, Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani and Mizoram opposition leader Pu Lalduhoma. Three stalwarts of the first BJP prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's cabinet and staunch anti-modi campaigners Yashwant Sinha, Shatrughan Sinha and Arun Shouriee besides Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav and Babulal Marandi of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha would also attend the rally. Apart from bringing thousands of supporters from their respective constituencies, the party leaders have also made special arrangements for their food, lodging, security and other necessary amenities in different parts of the city.  IANS inputs

Residents of Hyderabad who indulge in drunk driving may soon face trouble if they get caught by the authorities. The Cyberabad Traffic Police has been shooting off letters informing the Human Resources (HR) Department about all employees of companies in their jurisdiction who are caught violating the law. One such letter has also been doing the rounds on social media. “It is to inform that one of your employees was caught while driving under the influence of alcohol on November 23 at Parvatnagar in the limits of the Madhapur Traffic Police. The person underwent counselling at Traffic Institute, Cyberabad. On November 28, he attended court at Kukatpally and was sentenced to four days imprisonment from November 28 to December 1,” the letter by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Cyberabad Traffic Police, Vijay Kumar, stated. The letter, which was addressed to a software company in Gachibowli added, “As you must be aware, the legal permissible blood alcohol content for driving a vehicle in India is only 30 mg/100 ml. Also, it is to inform you that a large number of road traffic accidents are due to driving under the influence of alcohol. It not only puts the concerned person at risk but also other innocent road users. Being highly educated and responsible citizens, IT employees need to be ideally following traffic rules and thereby leading the way in bringing discipline on roads in Hyderabad city.” “Hence it is requested to urge all your employees to follow traffic rules without fail and co-operate with the traffic police to ensure safety of all road users,” the DCP stated. Speaking to TNM, the DCP said that they came up with the idea based on public feedback. “The public generally tells us that in India, the penalty amounts are very less and that it why there is this attitude in the public when it comes to following traffic rules. Changing the penalty amount is not in our hands and raising it steeply can’t be done because of socio-economic reasons, so we were thinking of different ways to bring in a deterrent, especially in the case of government employees and private employees. So, we decided to bring it to the knowledge of their employers, so that everybody will feel the pinch,” the police officer stated. Asked why employees in specific were under the radar, Vijay Kumar said, “They are educated and they are working. They are responsible employees. They have responsibility as they know the law as well. So, there is no excuse over there. Therefore, without any compromise we are writing.” “Our intention is to bring a sense of responsibility as the people take refuge under anonymity, keeping it as a secret from their family and office. Once it is known to their employers, their colleagues will also get to know. We don’t expect companies to take any action. We just want to inculcate a sense of responsibility from the person who is caught. There should also be a little fear among them,” he added. Asked about the response the police have received, Vijay Kumar said that many companies had replied to the department, thanking them for informing.   “Some even proactively responded stating that they are taking up sensitisation programmes among their employees,” the DCP added.   With inputs from Shilpa S Ranipeta.

Sharmila had filed a complaint with the Hyderabad police against 15 websites that were spreading rumours of her having an affair with actor Prabhas.
After a complaint was filed with the Hyderabad police against websites that have been spreading rumours about actor Prabhas having an affair with YSRCP chief’s sister Sharmila, the Hyderabad police’s cyber crime wing has identified five persons in relation to the case. Sharmila, sister of YSRCP chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, filed a complaint with the Hyderabad Commissioner Anjani Kumar on January 14, 2018 against 15 websites that were alleging that she was having an affair with the Tollywood actor Prabhas. Speaking to TNM, KCS Raghuveer Das, additional DCP, Cyber Crimes, said that the five persons identified had been running channels and pages on different social media platforms spreading the rumour. They had posted vulgar and obscene content against Sharmila on their YouTube channels as well. “There are 15 websites (as listed in the complaint) that posted fake news linking actor Prabhas to Sharmila. Some of the websites had used very obscene language. The channels are run from multiple locations from across the country. We will soon serve them notices and strict action will be taken against the owners. We have written to Google for further assistance and are awaiting response from YouTube and Facebook regarding the derogatory videos uploaded,” the officer said. On whether the persons had any connection with the Telugu Desam Party, as Sharmila had alleged in a press conference last week, Raghuveer said that preliminary investigation has found that money has been the major motive in the crime and a probe is on to find if the five persons have any common connection. In the press conference last week, Sharmila had accused TDP of spreading fake news ahead in an attempt to malign her image before the upcoming Andhra assembly elections. She added that she had filed a complaint with the Hyderabad police because she didn’t have faith on the Andhra Pradesh police. “Without any doubt I can tell that Telugu Desam Party is behind this campaign. It is not new for the TDP to spread rumours; earlier they spread rumours that my father Rajasekhar Reddy was a factionist. Many TDP leaders said that I have an affair with him (Prabhas). If the TDP did not have any involvement, why didn’t they condemn it? Why didn’t Chandrababu Naidu stop them?” she asked. Condemning the alleged mudslinging campaign, she said, “I have never met actor Prabhas in my life; haven’t spoken to him even once. That person and I have no relation. I swear on my children, this is the truth.”

Phishing
Seven people have allegedly cheated 13 companies in Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and New Delhi of over Rs 70 lakh.
An elaborate phishing scam came to light in Hyderabad on Saturday, showcasing how easy it is to forge someone’s identity and swap SIM cards in order to steal their money. Seven people, including two Nigerians, were part of the scam. Six have been arrested so far by the Cyber Crime Police, Cyberabad, and the kingpin is absconding. The phishing scam came to light after one Pantham Venkata Krishna, first lost network connection to his mobile number, and two days later, found Rs 5 lakh and Rs 4 lakh being transferred from two bank accounts of companies he was associated with to bank accounts in Kolkata -- transactions he had not made. The victim then approached a mobile telecom store, and learned that a new SIM card had been taken on his name. After this he filed a complaint, an elaborate ploy unravelled. Ebigbo Innocent alias James, the mastermind, sent phishing emails in order to collect banking credentials and registered mobile numbers. In case of a scam such as this, Trojan or other malware is sent to the unknowing victims, which helps scammers collect bank account details and your registered mobile number. Trojan is disguised as legitimate software, which is why victims fall prey to the same. Ebigbo collected banking details and the registered mobile number this way, which he then passed on to Odafe Henry, the second accused (who is also a Nigerian national), fifth accused Rajat Kundu and one other person. Rajat would then collect details of the phone number through his sources at mobile telecom stores and prepare fake documents. This was then used to procure a SIM card through the service provider of the victim. Usually, SIM swaps are requested by the customers themselves (for example --  if customers wish to upgrade the SIM, or if they have lost their phone and wish to block the old SIM and get a new one). But in this case, it is facilitated by the scammer and the fake documents are provided. The scammer then receives the new functional SIM, and renders the SIM held by the victim useless. Once they obtained the SIM card, Ebigbo would carry out the transactions from the accounts he hacked. Rajat, who had the new SIM card, would receive the One-Time password to carry out the transaction. Once they received the money, it was transferred to a different account, and then withdrawn from multiple locations. Sometimes gold ornaments were purchased, and then converted to cash. This cash was then given to Henry, who would purchase items in Kolkata, and then ship them to Ebigbo in Nigeria. Apart from Ebigbo and Henry, the other five accused are natives of Kolkata. The seven have allegedly cheated 13 companies in Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and New Delhi of over Rs 70 lakh. This SIM swap scam is becoming a common method of fraudulently obtaining financial details. Normally, when people request a new SIM card for any requirement, the old SIM card is deactivated, and all alerts go to the new SIM. But when details are fraudulently obtained with the help of phishing emails, the owner of the SIM card is left helpless, and scammers bypass the two-step verification process for financial transactions as they now have the SIM of the registered mobile number. In a similar incident, a businessman from Mumbai lost Rs 1.86 crore. The man received six missed calls on his phone at 2 am, but by morning, his SIM did not work. When he approached the service provider, they informed him that a SIM replacement request had been placed. When he checked his bank account, all his money had vanished. “Even when you happen to open a fake version of your bank website, your details are automatically compromised. Your data is accessed by scamsters every time you access unsecured Web connections, or open phishing emails,” a cybercrime official told Mumbai Mirror.

Speaking in the Assembly, Congress MLA Gandra Venkataramana Reddy pointed out that it was affecting the everyday functioning of the state government.
The Telangana Congress on Sunday questioned the delay in forming the state cabinet by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, Congress leader and Bhupalpalle MLA Gandra Venkataramana Reddy pointed out that it had been 40 days since the results of the election were announced in December, but the cabinet was yet to be formed.  The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had swept the polls held on December 7, winning 88 out of the 119-seat Assembly in the state. The Congress leader demanded that the cabinet expansion take place soon, and pointed out that there was barely a month or two remaining, before the model code of conduct would be imposed in the state again, for the Lok Sabha elections. He also said it was affecting the everyday functioning of the state government. Two days after winning the polls, KCR had taken the oath as Chief Minister. Mahmood Ali was made the Home Minister of the state and took oath on the same day. However, there has been no further announcements from the Chief Minister on extending his cabinet. Gandra Venkatramana Reddy also hit out at Governor E S L Narasimhan's speech and said it was highly political in nature and was only praising the TRS. "There was no clarity on many things that were promised by the ruling party," the Congress leader said.  Addressing the joint session of both Houses of the state legislature, the Governor Narasimhan on Saturday said that Telangana had been progressing in every arena and positioning itself as a leading state in the country, due to the effective governance under the leadership of K. Chandrasekhar Rao."This was reflected clearly in the electorate again reposing confidence overwhelmingly and returning the existing government to power with an emphatic majority in the recently concluded elections," he said. Narasimhan pointed out that the people of Telangana achieved a separate state for themselves in 2014 after six decades of relentless struggle. The government straightaway took up the process of reconstruction, according top priority to welfare of the poor. He told the legislators that Telangana achieved one of the highest growth rates in the country. During the first four years from 2014-2018, the state achieved 17.17 percent compound annual revenue growth rate and during the current 2018-19 financial year, the growth rate so far stands at 29.93 percent.   IANS inputs

In a dramatic incident caught on camera, a pipeline of the Telangana government’s Mission Bhagiratha burst in Mahabubnagar district on Sunday, resulting in a large amount of water gushing out with full force. The incident reportedly took place in Thadoor mandal’s Medipur village and visuals show a large amount of water gushing out, as locals watched on. The water blocked the road adjacent to the leak, as cars tried to go through it and get to the other side. Motorists had no choice but to stop. However, officials said that though the leak caused a loss amounting to several gallons of water, the supply to the villages and to Hyderabad would not be affected. “Though Krishna water is being used for Mission Bhagiratha, but for the city, the water board is drawing Krishna water from an off-take point near Puttamgandi village of Nalgonda district. The water board will supply Krishna water without interruptions.” chief general manager, Transmission, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), D Sudershan, told the Times of India. Watch the video below. A flagship scheme of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government, Mission Bhagiratha aims to ensure drinking water to each and every household in the state by March 31, 2019. “The CM desired that from April 1, 2019, not even a single person anywhere in the state is seen carrying a water pot or a vessel for fetching water from any other place, instead of their house, irrespective of whether it is part of hilly areas, forest areas or remote areas,” a press release from the Chief Minister’s office had said last month. During a review meeting with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on December 17, officials had said that out of a total of 23,968 habitations, the bulk supply had reached 23,947 habitations. “The responsibility of the government does not cease with merely reaching the bulk water to the villages and supply at the doorstep to every house. Even after that, without any interruption and hurdle, water shall be supplied continuously. People would be put to hardship even on a single day if they are denied water supply. Hence, supplying water continuously without any interruption is as important as completing the project,” KCR was quoted as saying at the time.

Criticism falling on deaf ears? Telangana CM KCR hosts 5-day yagam with 300 priests

Controversy
Over 300 priests from different states are attending the event at KCR's farmhouse, which will be attended by hundreds of TRS leaders.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's decision to host a massive five-day yagam at his farmhouse in Siddipet district has drawn criticism, but those comments have fallen on deaf ears as far as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president is concerned.  Dubbed the 'Maha Rudra Sahitha Sahasra Chandi Yagam,' over 300 priests from different states have turned up to conduct prayers beginning Monday. The event will see attendance from all elected MLAs, MLCs and MPs along with senior TRS leaders and even their family members. This is the first major religious event being conducted by KCR, after his party swept the polls in December last year, bagging 88 seats out of the 119-member Legislative Assembly. Reports also suggest that the chief minister may announce the remaining members of his cabinet after the event concludes.  Since being elected in 2014, KCR has been no stranger to controversy as he has repeatedly drawn flak for his superstitious beliefs, whether it is his obsession with making government buildings 'Vastu' compliant, or his expensive 'thanksgiving tour' where he visited several temples in the two Telugu states and donated jewellery to the presiding deity, allegedly from the state exchequer.   Despite this, observers say that criticism seems to be of no use where KCR is concerned as he has been elected for another five years and dissent is unlikely to stall him or dampen his spirits. "It is political hubris. The attitude comes from big electoral victories which are taken as an endorsement of political strategy," notes activist and academic Padmaja Shaw."In spite of all the piety, there doesn't seem to be any moral base from which any of these politicians are operating," she adds, pointing to the amount of liquor and cash flow during the elections last month. "KCR doesn't seem to think it is important to form a cabinet even one month after the polls. Politicians have perfected the art of capturing votes and winning elections, so it gives them total impunity after that," Padmaja argues. T V Rao of the Jana Vignana Vedika, a rationalist forum, says that there are two reasons that may have made KCR host the religious ceremony. "While one way to perceive it might be to say that KCR is blindly superstitious and religious, we also have to take into account that he is a good strategist. He understands politics well and we also must take into account that the people want a leader who is God-fearing. So, while he may be doing it out of belief, it may also help him get votes in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls." Though the BJP said that they have no problem with KCR's decision to conduct the yagam as it was his personal belief, they went on to criticise his priorities for the state. "However, who will govern the state? Why did people vote him back to power? The distressed farmers were promised Rs 1 lakh loan waiver as soon as he returned to power but he has conveniently forgotten that. Instead, he indulges in his personal and political agenda, both on the basis of the Federal Front where he is travelling on public money, and today, in his personal errands," BJP Chief Spokesperson Krishna Saagar Rao said in a video statement."We want to ask him and he should be answerable, who will govern the state? Where are the Council of Ministers even after over one month after election results? Did people elect him just to do politics of appeasement and indulgence of his personal errands or did they elect him to govern the state?" the BJP leader asked.  Ahead of the polls, KCR performed two homams at his farmhouse in Erravalli. KCR and his family performed the Raja Shyamala Chandi Homam, and Chandi Sahitha Rudra Homam for the 'welfare of the people' with over 100 priests participating in the event. No mediapersons were allowed at the venue. In 2015, he performed a Rs 15 crore ‘Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagnam,’ due to Telangana’s drought and scanty rainfall, even as the state was plagued by farmer suicides.
