The Indian Medical Association has reportedly threatened to take legal action against the Telangana government if the latter dissolves the Medical Council of India (MCI) and supports the proposed National Medical Commission Bill 2016.

The Deccan Chronicle reported:

The proposed commission is going to have representatives from other walks of life and it is claimed that the ills of corruption and poor doctor-patient ratio will be solved and healthcare improved.

However, some doctors strongly oppose it and claim that the bill would increase corruption.

Speaking to DC, former secretary of united AP IMA Dr Yadgiri Rao said, “The hidden agenda of the government is to have a medical college in every district in the country. Just like how engineering colleges have mushroomed they want medical colleges. But that is not going to solve the problem. Existing doctors are not distributed properly. It is high time a scientific plan is implemented so that doctors practice in rural areas.”

The report also quotes sources in the health ministry and states that the decision to dissolve the MCI came because it was unable to curtail unethical practices.

Earlier, the committee that was formed to take a decision on scrapping the MCI was also heavily criticized as it had three IAS officers and no medical professionals.

The Committee comprised of PK Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog and B.P.Sharma, Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare.
