Many frustrated Hyderabadis were stuck in long traffic jams as roads remained waterlogged on Friday evening after various parts of the city witnessed a heavy downpour.

The Times of India reported:

Though it rained an average of 34 millimetres, IMD officials noticed trends of some areas receiving heavier rainfall. Balanagar received 68.25 mm, the highest, followed by Madhapur and many parts of central Hyderabad. As rains started pounding the city from 3.30 pm, the Punjagutta circle and Jubilee Hills checkpost (both major water-logging points) got flooded bringing traffic to a complete halt in many parts of the city.

Speaking to TOI, Y K Reddy, director (in-charge), IMD Hyderabad, said that an upper air circulation persisting over Telangana and Vidarbha triggered these rains. “While the circulation is slowly moving westwards, it will bring more rain over the city for the next two days. Also, there are chances that there might be isolated spells of heavy rainfall over the city," he said.

After various complaints of traffic jams, the city police also directed all police officers to help traffic cops in clearing congestion.

The New Indian Express reported that an overflowing Rajiv Gandhi Nagar nala in Balanagar entered low lying houses.

The report also added that about 11 houses and two compound walls and one house nala sidewall collapsed.

Meanwhile, the city zoo remained shut as water from the Mir Alam tank adjacent to the zoo, rushed into the animal enclosures.

The Hindu reported:

Visitors were shooed away after water from the lake flowed into the zoo covering the paths inside as well as filling up the moats. The worst affected area appears to be the safari whose entrance had knee deep water on Friday and was gushing like a rivulet into adjacent areas of the zoo. The dam wall abuts the enclosure for elephants. Zoo officials said the dam is a safe structure despite the seepage.

"There is no threat to animals or birds as they are in their night shelters and are being fed according to the routine. Only, they may not get the required exercise," a zoo official told the newspaper.

Deccan Chronicle reported that the MET department has withdrawn a heavy rainfall warning but the state will continue to receive light to moderate rains and thundershowers.
