The image that went viral
A picture of a pothole-ridden road is doing the rounds on social media and WhatsApp groups in Hyderabad, claiming to be an area in the city. The photo shows a Bituminous road that has been completely destroyed due to the rain, with massive potholes filled with water. The photo is doing the rounds with the message, "NASA found people walking on the Moon. HMDA (Hyderabad Municipal Development Authority) confirms it’s Kukatpally." Another message replaces Kukatpally with Chintal Basti, another area in Hyderabad. However, the picture is neither from Kukatpally or Chintal Basti, and seems to be from Mumbai. The picture was initially tweeted with just the first part of the message, by Darshan Mehta, a journalist, on August 1. Nasa found people walking on the Moon pic.twitter.com/wKOgc9OXpW — Darshan Mehta (@darshanvmehta1) August 1, 2017 However, while the original tweet did not garner as much attention, residents in Hyderabad have been spreading the image all over groups on Facebook and WhatsApp. It is understandable that residents of Hyderabad passed it off as a road in their own city, due to the crumbling state of infrastructure in the 'global city'. Earlier this week, Irked with crumbling, pothole-ridden roads that have become a commuting nightmare, the citizens of Hyderabad decided to register their protest online. A petition on Change.org asks for safe roads in Hyderabad within six months, or a refund of the road taxes paid by citizen. The petition demands a public announcement from the Telangana government on three things. 1. Identifying the damaged roads/drainages in the city and make the data publicly available. So that public can contribute for the data set. 2. Action plan with timelines about fixing the roads. 3. Continual public announcements on the progress of the promised timelines till it is completely achieved.  A link to the petition can be found here.  Also Read: Build safe roads or refund the tax': Irked Hyderabad citizens start online petition'I know how bumpy the ride is': KTR admits that Hyderabad's roads are pathetic No lessons learnt: Why do Hyderabad roads get inundated so easily?
