In an incident that reflects official apathy, three people, including a couple, suffered serious injuries in Hyderabad after a road in Safilguda caved in on Saturday morning.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 8 am, and the injured were rescued by locals and sent to a nearby hospital.
The accident happened due to construction work for the multi-crore Malkajigiri water pipeline project, when the road was dug up and reportedly filled up with lose gravel.
“The authorities did an extremely shoddy job. Luckily the incident occurred during the early hours of the day and the vehicles had just halted at the traffic signal. If it had happened during peak hours with traffic moving in full flow, it could have caused a major tragedy," Suresh Kumar, an eye witness told the Times of India.
The TOI report also adds that HMWS&SB authorities blamed the agency that bagged the contract to dig the trench, while the GHMC blamed the water board for opening up the supply despite damage in the pipes.
The Deccan Chronicle quotes the police as saying that the contractor had disconnected another pipeline which supplies drinking water to the area for the work, but did not reconnect it properly, which led to water leaking from the pipeline, and the road caving in.
A case has been registered against the contractor with the Malkajgiri police.

For months, local residents have been complaining about the state of the roads. The entire stretch from Neredmet to the Safilguda lake park is almost life-threatening, while the road adjacent to Safilguda Lake Park, once dubbed Hyderabad's 'Mini Tank Bund', is downright pathetic.
