Dasari's women: Revisiting the Telugu filmmaker who gave us 'strong' female leads

Flix Flashback
Telugu cinema stands proud with a hundred-year legacy and yet there are hardly 10 women who’ve directed more than two films in the last 100 years.
Dasari Narayana Rao was a director, producer, screenwriter, dialogue writer, lyricist, actor, ran a newspaper and was even a state minister. His directorial debut Tata Manavadu (1972) was successful and later remade in Kannada and Hindi. A glance at the leading women in Dasari’s movies, you’ll notice that they tend to be ‘modern’ women. However, these films were a product of their time and the women were still coloured in the patriarchal and sexist lenses of the filmmaker, which was reflective of the 1970s. Literature, media, and movies from the 1970s and onwards, tend to show women being limited to fewer roles - as wives, working professionals and professional villains, making them one-dimensional and flat characters. In Dasari’s Lady Inspector Renuka (1993), the inspector played by Radha is a headstrong and sincere officer, who shows no character development despite extreme situations. Her friend, a journalist played by Bhanupriya, is reduced to her profession and there’s no space or thought for a personality that branches outside work. Telugu cinema stands proud with a hundred-year legacy and yet there are hardly 10 women who’ve directed more than two films in the last 100 years. The industry is still full of men playing all the major roles, as is the case with most film industries across the world. So, when directors did even a half-baked job of portraying realistic or powerful women, everyone took notice.   Women in Dasari’s film Dasari made more women-centric movies in the later years with a ‘strong’ character like Amma Rajinama (1991), Lady Inspector Renuka (1993), Osey Ramulamma (1997), and Kante Koothurne Kanu (2000). In Amma Rajinama, there is a progressive thought behind showing the mother who retires when she’s taken for granted, but she is still patriarchal and misogynistic in how she chides her daughter-in-law for not dressing properly or when she scolds her granddaughter for coming home late. These preachy moments in 2019 are signs of internalised patriarchy but in 1990, it was the peak of progressive cinema.  Dasari’s Meghasandesam (1983) is about a married poet Ravindra Babu, played by Akkineni Nageshwar Rao, who falls in love with a dancer named Padma, played by Jayaprada. His poetry about the dancer brings him great success. The movie’s only moment of glory, was when Ravindra Babu’s wife Parvathi, played by Jayasudha, leaves him. Ravindra turns into a shadow of his former self, pining for a woman he can’t be with because of his wife. Parvathi can’t deal with Ravindra’s forlorn behaviour and asks him to leave her and go chase the love he seeks because she’s not able to fulfil his needs. It is a powerful stance for a 1980s Telugu mainstream movie, to have the ideal woman leave her husband because she doesn’t want him. And yet at their daughter’s wedding, they come together and do the “kanyadaan”.  This sliver of freedom and agency that Parvathi had, snowballed. Women in Dasari’s subsequent movies slowly had more agency and control when compared to women in his previous movies. Amma Rajinama was made eight years after Meghasandesam and Parvathi probably set this ball in motion. In spite of his patriarchal notions of feminism, Dasari opened doors for movies that empowered women. When his movies about empowered women made money, it paved the path for making more ‘women’ centric movies. But, the trend didn’t continue into the 2000s. The Rayalaseema faction cinema (action movies focused on the masculine show of the local upper caste men) and new wave love stories with new actors, slowed it down drastically. New wave of Telugu movies Actors Tarun and Uday Kiran debuted in the year 2000, and Nithiin in 2002. They were cast in love stories, family dramas, and more love stories. The three held a strong grip on the next decade of Telugu cinema. Actors Venkatesh and Nagarjun had to reinvent themselves to stay relevant after a decade since they debuted. With the new millennium, a new wave of movies, actors, directors, and filmmakers changed the cinema industry. Dasari Narayana Rao, who was relevant and a big name for three decades, started losing his grip on the audience. Directors managed to change their style and continued to make movies that helped them succeed in the changing tide. Rayalaseema faction movies played on caste politics and the glorification of the upper caste saviour - most often the filmmakers’ caste and their gender, and it seemed to work. Family dramas got a fresh coat of paint and spoke about elite, urban families and explored the cityscape. After two decades of love stories, elopement, and standing up against the family and fighting, the next two decades were about convincing the family to accept their love. Dasari moved to politics in the early 2000s and the number of movies he made dwindled.  The movies that were being made had a saviour – a strong, smart, fair and handsome man - to rescue the damsel in distress, and this was the beginning of women turning back into damsels. This only got worse as the 2000s kept rolling, and women had fewer lines, every minute into a movie, again. In SS Rajamouli’s Magadheera (2009), for instance, actor Kajal Aggarwal played a princess, who could have easily been replaced by a lamp. It was only with the success of Arundhati in the same year that movies with stronger women characters once again had a revival in Telugu cinema. Sexual Assault
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had earlier asked for a speedy trial in the murder of the 26-year-old veterinary doctor.
The Telangana government on Wednesday issued orders to designate the I Additional District and Session Judge in Mahabubnagar as a special court for speedy trial in the case of gangrape and murder of 26-year-old Disha* (name changed). The government had earlier appealed to the Telangana High Court to give permission for the same. In the order signed by A Santosh Reddy, secretary to government, legal affairs, legislative affairs and justice, states, “Government after careful examination of the proposal, hereby designate the Court of Additional District & Sessions Judge, Mahabubnagar, as a Special Court for speedy trial of the rape and murder case of Disha.” As protests asking for justice refuse to die down, earlier this week, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, termed the accused as animals in human form, and asked for a speedy trial in the case. The CM had expressed that the government would extend all help and support to the family members of the victim. Meanwhile, the four accused have been imprisoned under high security in Cherlapally jail. They were sent to a 14-day judicial custody by the Shadnagar magistrate on Saturday. Police have now appealed for a 10-day police custody to interrogate the accused--Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu. On November 27, Disha, a 26-year-old veterinarian doctor from Hyderabad was brutally gangraped and killed allegedly by a four-member gang, natives of Narayanpet district at Thondupally toll gate on Outer Ring Road, Shamshabad. The gang who were driving a lorry had trapped her by deflating one of the tyres of her two-wheeler which she had parked near the toll gate. At around 9 pm, when she reached the spot to take her vehicle she noticed that the tyre was punctured.  The men approached her saying they would help her fix the tyre. They forcibly took her to nearby bushes, assaulted and killed her. After killing her, they burned her body at Chatanpally village under Shadnagar police station limits, a few kms away from the place where she was murdered.

Protest
The incident happened three days before the Hyderabad vet was gangraped and murdered.
A protest rally in Asifabad on Wednesday
Even as the outrage over the gangrape and murder of a Hyderabad based vet continues, Dalit rights activists ask why another incident in the same state has escaped the radar. “We fight against every injustice and condole without seeing caste and religion. But when it comes to atrocities against people from our community, there is nobody to raise their voice,” says Manda Krishna Madiga, a well-known activist who is the president of the Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS). The incident that he’s referring to is the brutal gangrape and murder of Aparichita (name changed), a 30-year-old woman hawker from the Budagajangam caste, which is among the most marginalised castes in Telangana, even among Dalits. A day after the horrific incident came to light, three men - Shaik Babu (35), Shaik Shaboddin (30) and Shaik Mukdum (40) - from Ellapatur village in Lingapur were arrested and sent to judicial custody. The crime took place on November 24 in Asifabad district, three days before the Hyderabad vet was gangraped and murdered. And though the latter incident has drawn attention to the rampant sexual violence against women in the country, Aparichita’s death is hardly being discussed. On Wednesday, the MRPS and several other Dalit and Adivasi organisations staged a dharna, demanding justice for Aparichita. Speaking to TNM, Aparichita’s husband says, “No official, MLA or minister has come to see us or ask after us. Why this discrimination? They seem convinced that this incident doesn’t deserve any attention.” Aparichita was from Nirmal district. Adding that only a few local journalists approached the family and spoke to them, he alleges that their fight for justice is being ignored. Speaking to TNM, T Madhu, District Secretary of Budgajangam Sangam, Nirmal district, says, "Since we are Dalits and we don't have politicians, MLAs or ministers from our communities, no one is coming to meet the family or protest seeking justice for the victim. Not even the local MLA or opposition leaders have come." On Wednesday, the MRPS, Budagajangam and other organisations staged a dharna and rally in Asifabad, demanding justice. Hundreds of students participated in the rally, in support of the family. Earlier this week, members of the Telangana SC, ST Commission met the family members of the deceased woman at her residence in Nirmal district. Police seeks custody of the accused According to the police, the three accused found Aparichita when she was on her way to another village, selling balloons and petty cosmetics. She was gangraped and killed in the outskirts of their village. According to Asifabad police, investigation officials have sought the custody of the accused for further enquiry.  Speaking to TNM, DySP and Investigation Officer A Satyanarayana says, "We are waiting to get the Forensic Science Laboratory reports for the evidences we have already sent. Today, we have already requested for custody of the accused in order to submit DNA samples to the FSL to further the investigation." The Hyderabad police had filed a petition in the court on Monday seeking 10-day custody of the accused.
The Shadnagar court on Wednesday remanded the four accused in the rape and murder case of Hyderabad veterinary doctor Disha (name changed) to seven day police custody. The Hyderabad police had sought for ten days’ custody.  The Hyderabad police on Monday had filed a petition in a local court at Shadnagar seeking 10-day custody of the accused for a more comprehensive interrogation. The accused were sent to a 14-day judicial custody by the Shadnagar magistrate on Saturday. According to reports, the four accused —  Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu — were kept in an isolated cell at the Cherlapally Central Prison to avoid confrontation with other inmates, suspecting that they may be attacked by other inmates. Earlier in the day, the Telangana government issued orders to set up a special court for a speedy trial in the case of the gangrape and murder of the 26-year-old woman. The government had earlier appealed to the Telangana High Court to give permission for the same. Breaking his silence on the issue, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday had extended all help and support to the family of the victim. On November 27, Disha, a 26-year-old veterinarian doctor from Hyderabad was brutally gangraped and killed allegedly by the four-member gang, who are natives of Narayanpet district, at Thondupally toll gate on Outer Ring Road, Shamshabad. Law and order
This year’s anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition comes after the historic SC verdict of Nov 9 that the disputed land would be given to the Hindu parties.
The Hyderabad city police have imposed Section 144 from Thursday to Saturday across the city. The move by the police comes a day ahead of the 27th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition on December 6. “We have received information that certain groups are trying to create disturbances affecting public peace and order in the city, inciting communal animosity between different communities on December 6,” the police said, in a statement to media. Police have said that Section 144 will be in force from Thursday 6 pm to Friday 6 am.  The police have prohibited all kinds of processions, dharna, rally (including motorcycle rally) or public meetings during the period. Prohibition has also been placed on individuals or groups of individuals from making any speech, gesture or displaying pictures, symbols, placards, flags etc, which are likely to create religious animosity or hatred between different communities or individuals or is likely to cause disturbance to the public peace and order in the limits of the city, except those permitted by the police.  This year’s anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition comes after the historic November 9 verdict by the five-judge bench of the Supreme Court (SC) that gave a unanimous judgment in the Ayodhya case. The Supreme Court held that the disputed land would be given to the Hindu parties.  The SC also ordered alternate land measuring five acres for the Sunni Muslim Waqf Board. The verdict was given by a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, and comprised Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer. The Centre has been tasked with the creation of a Board of Trustees for the construction of the temple at the disputed site. The trust has to be set up within three months from the verdict and the trust will take over the management of construction of the temple. The disputed 2.77 acre land, which includes the inner and outer courtyards, will be handed over by the Centre to the trustees. The rest of the land will also be handed over to the trustees.

This is the third such arrest of persons for posting insensitive and derogatory comments on social media, relating to the gruesome crime.
Police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad on Wednesday arrested two more persons for posting abusive and derogatory comments on Facebook in the wake of the gangrape and murder of a woman veterinarian on November 27. This is the third such arrest of persons for posting derogatory messages on social media, relating to the gruesome crime.  Hyderabad police took into custody Sai Nath of Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district for posting objectionable comments about the victim. He is the second youth to be arrested for derogatory comments. Meanwhile, Cyberabad Police also arrested Anil Kumar Ambala, 28, a resident of Gundrampally Village in Telangana's Nalgonda district, for making an abusive comment about ex-MP K Kavitha on Facebook while reacting to the gruesome crime. Police acted on the complaint filed with the SHE team by Vijaya Kesari, a resident of Hyderabad, who found the comment by Anil Kumar as vulgar and objectionable. Hyderabad police had on Tuesday arrested 22-year-old Chavan Sriram for allegedly making a derogatory comment on social media about the victim. Sriram, is a resident of Nizamabad district of Telangana, and was nabbed for making the vulgar comment on Facebook about Disha*, as the victim of the horrific crime is being called by the police. He was allegedly posting the derogatory messages using a Facebook profile under the name Stalin Sriram. Police on November 30 had registered a suo motu case against some unknown persons who uploaded photos of the recent victim of sexual violence and murder, and posted objectionable comments with Facebook profile 'Stalin Sriram' and others. "These posts are very derogatory, obscene and vulgar," the police had said. Speaking to TNM, the police had made it clear that such offenders could be prosecuted under the Information Technology Act coupled with IPC section 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). The veterinarian was gang-raped and murdered by four persons near Outer Ring Road at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad on the night of November 27. They later dumped the body near Shadnagar town and set the body on fire. (With inputs from IANS)

KTR slams Centre for overlooking Hyderabad to set up defence industrial corridor

Politics
“We have to rise above petty politics,” said KTR, as he accused the Centre of diverting projects from Telangana to Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Telangana Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Wednesday slammed the Centre for overlooking Hyderabad and Bengaluru to set up a defence industrial production corridor due to "petty political and geopolitical considerations". KTR said he had urged then Union Defence Minister to set up defence industrial production corridor between Hyderabad and Bengaluru as the two cities were ideal for such a project. The minister said he was told that the Centre decided to set up one defence production corridor in Bundelkhand in Uttar Pradesh and another in Chennai. "I was a bit baffled and wanted to know the grounds for this decision. They gave some reason which made no sense," he said."Unfortunately, it appears to me, in matters of national importance and even in matters of strategic sectors like defence and aerospace, sometimes regional compulsions outweigh nationally important locations,” said KTR, adding that Hyderabad has the best ecosystem for defence and aerospace sector in the country. The minister said one Large OEM in the defence sector whom he was trying to persuade to set up their unit in Hyderabad, was asked by the government of India to consider either Nagpur, Gujarat or Rajasthan. "There was no logic in it. They were interested in locations other than Hyderabad and Bengaluru,” he said adding that "It is a travesty that matters of investment coming to India in important sectors like defence have to be weighed on political or geopolitical considerations.” He urged the Centre to take a serious re-look at its strategy as it plans to spend billions of dollars to encourage defence production capabilities in the country. "We have to rise above petty politics or geopolitical equations. It can't be about winning an election someway or the other. It can't be because Uttar Pradesh is the largest state and it has 70 parliamentary seats. It has to be because a specific region makes sense for its strong ecosystem and already well-built establishment,” said the minister, who hoped that good sense and wisdom will prevail. KTR said that it was due to the strategic location of the city that several defence labs were set up here decades ago.  The minister was speaking at a Defence Conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Lack of funds, little publicity: Why women in Hyd aren’t aware of city’s Sakhi centres

Government apathy
The Sakhi centres in the state were established around 2015 to provide round-the-clock help to women in distress.
A search for the Sakhi centre situated in Secunderabad, which promises 24X7 help to women in distress, will prove challenging for women in Hyderabad. Neither does the place show up on Google maps nor is it easy to find a phone number. Except for a few media reports that announced the inauguration of the centre, the institution is almost as good as being non-existent on the maps of Hyderabad. On the way to the big building that houses the centre, this reporter asked a female staff at a nearby nursing home for the way to the centre. She shook her head and said she has never heard of an institution by this name before. The next closest Sakhi centre for any woman living in Hyderabad is in Vanasathalipuram, almost 20 km away from the city. On the fateful night Disha (name changed) was raped and murdered by a gang of four lorry drivers, the young woman, sensing danger, chose to call her sister instead of the police. Despite the state running 24X7 rescue centres for women, Madhuri, like most women in the city, decided it was best to confide in her sister than rely on the government machinery for help. A week after Disha’s death and seven years after the brutal murder of Nirbhaya in Delhi, very little has been done by the Centre and state to help women in crisis. With only a few publicity campaigns, the women in Hyderabad are still unaware of how to reach out to resource mechanisms that can lend a helping hand in times of crisis. Lack of funds from Centre The Nirbhaya fund was a Rs 1000-crore package which was announced by the Central government in 2013 after the brutal murder and gangrape of Nirbhaya in 2012. The Centre started distributing money under this scheme beginning from 2014, which led to the setup of Sakhi centres. The Sakhi centre is touted to be a one-stop centre that provides necessary support to women facing physical, sexual, emotional, psychological and economic abuse, irrespective of age, class, caste, education status, marital status, race and culture. Though the Central government claims to have distributed funds from 2014 onwards, state authorities with the Women and Child Welfare Department in Telangana say that money started flowing in only towards the end of 2017. Centres were only opened in nine districts in 2015, but many shut down due to staff crunch and inability to pay salaries. According to a senior government official working with the Women and Child Welfare Commission, the Centre took a couple of years to assess the performance of the Sakhi centres before it started allocating funds to build better infrastructure. It wasn't until 2018 that centres opened across the state. “In fact, most of the Sakhi centres in the state started only in 2018, after we started receiving regular funds from the Centre. Today, there are 33 centres, with at least one centre in each district of Telangana,” the official adds. In contrast to media reports that claim funds towards protection of women are under-utilised by government, the official says that the state government has been pitching in Rs 20 lakh in addition to the Rs 35 lakh provided by the Central government to each centre in a year. “There is a lot of red-tape which delays the distribution of funds every six months. The state is allowed to send its Utilisation Certificate (UCs) only after complete exhaustion of funds. For the next round of funds to get approval, it takes another 3-4 months during which the state spends from its own pockets for the upkeep of the Sakhi centres,” the official notes. As of December 2018, the state has received Rs 1393.43 lakh from the Centre of which Rs 745.46 lakhs have been put into use. The figure roughly translate into an approx 53% of total funds allocated by the government. “The rest of the amount has been earmarked for construction of buildings. Most of our centres operate out of rented buildings, the costs of which the state government bears. Due to lack of undisputed land and legal issues, we are facing trouble in putting the funds into use,” the official adds. Zero digital presence However, despite fund allocation and better infrastructure at centres, there have been negligent efforts from the side of both Centre and the state to create awareness of the Sakhi centres. Officials at the Women and Child Welfare Department note that no separate funds are allocated for publicity or campaigns to spread the word and create awareness among women. Barring a few posters and advertisements that were initially put up, the Sakhi centres even fail to have a digital presence. There are no helpline numbers that can aid women without Internet access reach the centres in each district. Dialling 181 might help, but again there are service providers (for example Vodafone) which do not recognise 181 as a toll-free number. Staff at the Sakhi centre notes that around 500 cases are registered in a month, with roughly around 10-15 cases per day. The counsellor who spoke to TNM said the staff is paid on time and that on a few days, they may register as few as 4 to 5 cases. However, the lower number of cases does not mean a decrease in violence against women, Ekta Verma, a women’s rights activist, notes. “A case in contrast is the Bharosa Centre, run by the state and SHE teams, which has a wider reach among women in Hyderabad due to its publicity campaigns. There are three Bharosa centres within Hyderabad. They work with corporations, civil societies and have a definite social media presence. Civil societies help you reach out to a large number of women who suffer in silence and are looking for a support system. The Sakhi centres do not provide a guarantee or establish a relationship with women in assuring that their problems would be heard,” Ekta says. However, officials note that Sakhi centres have better roles to play in rural districts when compared to cities like Hyderabad where population density is higher and reaching to every nook and corner is difficult. In rural areas, the centres are proving to be more effective due to wider reach and publicity, they claim. “Whatever little campaign we have been able to do is with the help of funds provided by the state. After the rape and murder of the veterinary doctor last week, we are now in talks to recruit young minds to create a social media presence and also put up advertisement in public places like metro. But this again is a lot of money which has to be sanctioned by the state. Concrete ways to establish our presence can be achieved when there is adequate allocation of funds and the Centre takes note of this,” the senior official notes.

KCR govt issues new ordinance exempting 28 corporations from ‘office of profit’ rule

The move by the Telangana government would help elected representatives appointed as chairmen of these corporations from not getting disqualified under the law.
The Telangana government on Wednesday issued a new ordinance exempting 28 corporations from Office of Profit (OOP) law. The move by the state government would help elected representatives appointed as chairmen of these corporations from not getting disqualified under the law. Under the Telangana Payment of Salaries and Pensions and Removal of Disqualifications (TPSPRD) Act, 1953, any MLA or MLC holding an office of profit faces disqualification. The new amendments brought in through an ordinance of the Act would help the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to offer chairman posts to those discontented party leaders who could not be accommodated in the state cabinet, reported ToI and TNIE. Disqualification under the OOP worked on the premise that a legislator might be susceptible to influence from the government and thus will not be able to discharge their constitutional mandate. The OOP is a position that brings the office bearer financial gain, advantage or a benefit.  A few of the chairman posts that have been exempted are the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, Yadadri Temple Development Authority, Vemulawada Temple Development Authority, Official Languages Commission and Sheep, Most Backward Classes Corporation, Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Corporation, Telangana Sports Development Authority and Goat Cooperative Society Federation. The chairman positions enjoy a cabinet minister rank and will help KCR offer these posts to those who had defected from the Congress to the TRS after the assembly polls in 2018. Apart from Sabitha Indhra Reddy, who defected to the TRS from the Congress, no other leader had made it to KCR’s cabinet. Speaking to ToI, M Padmanabha Reddy with the Forum for Good Governance pointed out that these corporations depended on the government for financial support and did not require a chairman to head them. Even if appointments are made, those appointed should be experts in the field and not a politician. Several senior leaders including former minister Kadiyam Srihari, Nayani Narasimha Reddy and Tummala Nageswara Rao are expected to be nominated as chairpersons of key corporations, reported TNIE. The former deputy speaker of the Assembly, M Padma Devender Reddy is also reportedly under consideration for the nominated posts. The names of Bigala Ganesh Gupta, the Nizamad Urban MLA, and Wardhannapet (SC) legislator Aroori Ramesh are also under consideration due to their caste affiliations.

A woman from Hyderabad died in Karnataka’s Bidar district on Thursday after a car in which she was travelling caught fire. 39-year-old Kalyani was travelling back to Hyderabad from Maharashtra’s Udgir when the incident occurred. A video of the burning car went viral soon after the incident. At around 10.30 am on Thursday, Kalyani, her husband Uday Kumar (42) and two children aged seven and ten years old, were travelling back to Hyderabad in a Hyundai i10. Kalyani was sitting in the front seat, while her husband was driving the car along national highway 9 in Bidar’s Mannaekhelli in Humnabad taluk. According to the Mannaekhelli Police, the temperature of the air conditioning equipment in the car had increased drastically and smoke began coming out of the car. Within seconds, the car caught fire and Uday Kumar immediately parked the car on the side of the road and got out. He then rescued his children, who were sitting in the back seat, after instructing his wife to get out. However, the fire allegedly spread within minutes and Kalyani was unable to get out of the car. “She was wearing a seatbelt and it got stuck. She was unable to detach the seat belt when the car caught fire,” said Mannaekhelli station officer Sunita. Uday Kumar called an ambulance and within minutes a fire engine also arrived at the spot to douse the flames. However, due to the intensity of the fire, Kalyani couldn’t be saved and succumbed. The Mannaekhelli police took Uday Kumar and the two children to the government hospital where they were administered first aid. They did not sustain any injuries.  Kalyani's body has been sent for an autopsy. The Mannaekhelli police have registered an accident case. Kalyani's body will be released to the family on Friday.

Meet the Hyderabad man on whose food reviews gastronomes in the city swear by

Mohammad Zubair Ali was also the official guide for famous food blogger Trevor James when he came on his food hunt in Hyderabad.
George Bernard Shaw once famously said: There is no sincerer love than the love for food. Hyderabad man Mohammad Zubair Ali, it would seem, has applied the maxim to his life with utmost devotion. Running the popular page Hyderabad Food Diaries on Facebook, Zubair is that Hyderabadi who doesn’t need an introduction to the food lovers in the city. A food reviewer and blogger, Zubair started reviewing food on social media three years ago, around the same time that he began his food blog. Today, Zubair has two significant awards in his kitty - Best Food Blogger and Best Social Media Influencer in the state. The awards were given by the Telangana Artists Association, which is supported by the state government. Zubair also takes pride in being the only Hyderabadi to have been invited by Trevor James, the famous Cannadian food blogger who runs the YouTube channel, Food Rangers. The young man has many gastronomical adventures to share, and most importantly, believes that food reviews should never be dishonest. “This I say because food reviews are taken very seriously and as a food lover, I would never want others to have a bad food experience,” he laughs. Zubair laid his hands on the culinary map of Hyderabad when food blogging and food videos on social media were still gaining traction. He'd always loved food but had never nurtured thoughts on documenting cuisines or writing about them. “I was in the second year of my hotel management course when I discovered my penchant for different cuisines. I was working at Hotel Marriott as part of my internship and I saw how beautifully the chefs made exotic dishes with just a few vegetables. Thoughts wandered to all the different cuisines, home-made food and street food that were lying unexplored in my city. And I just wished I could go and try all of them,” Zubair recounts. Soon after completing his course, he landed a job. But he quit after a while because all that Zubair wanted to do then was to explore food. “I started travelling and reading about food as soon as I left my job. I was clueless about how to promote content on social media and wasn’t even sure if my idea of starting a blog would help me earn a living. It’s during this time that some of my friends, who were on a trip to Hyderabad, asked me on their fourth day in the city about the best biryani they can eat here. I was annoyed because this city is much more than just biryani. So instead of people calling up and asking for recommendations, I decided why not just put them all under a single-roof,” Zubair says. Restaurants in Hyderabad await the spread of word through Zubair’s social media pages for customers to flock to their outlets. From food festivals, menu launches and new eateries, Zubair does it all. However, he hasn't gotten into doing cooking videos.  “Cooking is something I do not know. My mother doesn’t allow me to enter the kitchen. I am banned. But if need be, I can cook for survival,” Zubair laughs. It wasn’t and still isn’t easy for Zubair to run his social media accounts. He posts content on his Instagram page every single day, because, “There is so much competition around me. I visit a restaurant almost every day to keep the page running. You decide to relax for one day and it’s very easy for your followers to start following another page. To stay relevant, you need to flood your social media pages with content for followers to not get distracted,” Zubair says. Zubair doesn’t discriminate among food. From 5-star restaurants to street food, he reviews anything tasty available in the city. Typically, his posts are 1-2 minute videos on the taste of the food item, the ambience of the restaurant and then the price. He tastes a minimum of 4-5 dishes at a restaurant and doesn’t prefer fusion or experimental food.  “I usually take a night to decide on the content and most importantly, the right pictures to post. Taking great photographs of food is a hard-earned skill. After all, that’s why some people are lucky enough to get paid for it. Details like composition, lighting, and styling, will apply regardless of whether you are using a DSLR or a mobile phone,” says Zubair. On Canadian food blogger Trevor James and his wife’s visit to the city last year, Zubair was their official guide who took the couple on a food hunt.  “Trevor roamed around the city for six days. I took him to Shah Ghouse, Pista House and the street food stalls along Charminar. Trevor was in awe of our cuisine and for me, it was a rare honour,” Zubair recalls. One of Zubair’s most watched videos on Facebook is of Kharoof Mahshi, an oven-roasted whole lamb rubbed with seasonings inside and out, stuffed with rice and ground spices, almonds, pistachios, pine nuts and a variety of spices. Costing Rs 8,000 per plate, Zubair calls it one of the most expensive items he has ever tasted till date. “Though there are a large variety of non-vegetarian items available in the city, Hyderabad also has a sizeable variety when it comes to vegetarian food. Very recently I visited Masala Republic in Gachibowli. They had this dish called Boti Roti. I was surprised to see that they are serving meat in a pure vegetarian restaurant. When I enquired, the chef said that it's a mock meat (vegetarian food that tastes like meat) made from soy, textured vegetables and wheat gelatin. It absolutely tasted like mutton,” Zubair laughs. We asked Zubair’s for some of his favourite food spots in the city and these are his recommendations: 1.       Biryani at Meridian in Panjagutta 2.       Pocket friendly place for college-going students: Iron Hill café in Hi-Tech city 3.       For occasional dinners and fine dine: Aish Restaurant at Park Hyderabad 4.       Street food: Undisputedly at Charminar

From tiffin centres to the supply chain, Hyderabad in tears over onion prices

As onion prices soar across the country, the vegetable has become a nearly unaffordable commodity.
At Lakshmi’s Tiffin centre at SR Nagar in Hyderabad, the classic onion dosa and onion uttapam are both off the menu. With onion prices ranging anywhere between Rs 100 to Rs 160 per kilogram in several parts of Hyderabad, the vegetable has become a nearly unaffordable commodity. And everyone — from tiffin centres to pushcart vegetable sellers and distributors — is feeling the pinch. “We don’t buy from the market anymore. They were selling for Rs 100 a kilogram a week back, now a kilogram is priced between Rs 130 and Rs 150. The rates are changing every day. We can’t afford to buy and stock a quintal of onions anymore,” says Lakshmi, who now sources onions for cooking sambar from a pushcart vendor. “I get it for Rs 100 a kilogram but these are very small onions. They are not good in quality and we buy only what is required. We stopped making onion dosas and uttapams as the small onions are not suitable for it,” she adds. Another retail store owner told TNM that half the stock he receives for sale at his kirana store is rotten. "I buy from wholesalers, but half of the onions are rotten. I sit and separate the good ones and bad ones. From among the bad ones, I use the good parts of the onions for cooking at home. We have started doing that, what else to do?” says Sriramulu*, who owns a shop near the Telangana Chief Minister's camp office. The price of onions at Kukatpally and Bowenpally Rythu Bazaars in Hyderabad ranged between Rs 150 to Rs 160 a kilogram as of Thursday. In an effort to alleviate the price burden on the public, the state government has begun supplying 10 quintals to each Rythu Bazar in the city. The state now procures the onions and sells it at a fixed rate of Rs 40 per kilogram. One has to produce an Aadhaar card to avail the onions at Rythu Bazaars, but the availability can vary. “There is a huge demand for the subsidised onions as the price is low and it gets over really quickly. People then have to buy from traders who are selling at the market rate of Rs 100 or Rs 150 per kilogram depending on the quality of the onions. The ones being sold at Rs 40 per kilogram are small in size and fit for home use. Those who buy onions for hotels and restaurants have to go for the bigger onions, which are costly,” said an official from the Kukatpally Rythu Bazar. Sairam, who operates his pushcart in and around Ameerpet and Begumpet, has stopped buying higher-grade onions. Until three weeks ago, he would buy onions through auctions from either Bowenpally or Malakpet markets, but these days, he buys lower quality onions for Rs 80 per kilogram, and resells them for Rs 100 a kilogram. “I just don’t have the spending capacity to buy higher quality onions. Even if I buy a quintal of onion from the market for Rs 80 per kilogram, nearly half of it will be rotting as it is old stock. It’s too much work to sit and separate the good ones from the bad,” adds Sairam. Vishnu Onions is an onion distribution firm at Malakpet market, which buys onions by the truckload from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, and resells them. However, for the past three months, the rate of a truckload of onions being bought through auction ranges between Rs 3,000 to Rs 12,000. Previously, the prices were below Rs 1,000 per quintal. ”There are very few trucks that are coming in from the onion producing states. It’s due to the monsoon,” says owner Vishnu Raj Khanda. The onion distributor is of the view that Hyderabad and other cities in the south will have to endure high onion prices until the end of January next year. *Names changed

In a sudden development in the gangrape and murder case of a vet in Hyderabad, the four accused in the case – Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu – have been shot dead by the Telangana police in a reported encounter. Police said that the accused, who were taken to the scene of the crime for a reconstruction of the crime attempted to escape. Two policemen were also injured in the incident, they said.  The spot where the four where shot dead around 50 kms from Hyderabad pic.twitter.com/sLfuu2NHCv — Dhanya Rajendran (@dhanyarajendran) December 6, 2019 The accused were shot dead in the same place where Disha's (name changed) body was burnt after she was gangraped and murdered. They had been taken to the scene of the crime at Chatanpally, nearly 50 km away from Hyderabad, on Thursday to collect evidence of the crime. The reports of the reported encounter surfaced on Friday morning. Additional DG Law and Order, Jitender, told TNM that the incident happened after 6 am on Friday.  DCP Prakash Reddy, who is at the scene of the incident, told TNM that there was crossfire as the accused took the guns of the policemen and attempted to escape. The incident happened between 6 and 6.30 am, he said.  On Wednesday, the Shadnagar court had remanded the four accused to seven-days police custody. The Hyderabad police on Monday had filed a petition in a local court at Shadnagar seeking 10-day custody of the accused for a more comprehensive interrogation. The court, on Wednesday, had granted a seven-day police custody of the accused. On November 27, Disha, a 26-year-old veterinarian doctor from Hyderabad was gangraped and killed allegedly by the four-member gang, who are natives of Narayanpet district, at Thondupally toll gate on Outer Ring Road, Shamshabad. The gang who were driving a lorry had trapped her by deflating one of the tyres of her two-wheeler which she had parked near the toll gate. Around 9 pm, when she reached the spot to take her vehicle she noticed that the tyre was punctured. The men approached her saying they would help her fix the tyre. They forcibly took her to nearby bushes, assaulted and killed her. After killing her, they burned her body at Chatanpally village under Shadnagar police station limits, a few kms away from the place where she was murdered.

The events of Friday morning, however, were uncannily similar to an alleged encounter that happened in Warangal, eleven years ago.
Even as the nation wakes up to the news of a reported encounter of four accused in the gangrape and murder of a veterenarian in Hyderabad, the Cyberabad police said on Friday that the men— Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu— had attempted to escape. The police told the media that the accused men, taken to the spot for a reconstruction of the crime scene, attempted to attack the cops by taking their guns. Two policemen were also injured in the incident, they said. The events of Friday morning, however, were uncannily similar to an alleged encounter that happened in Warangal, eleven years ago. The top cop who is handling the Hyderabad vet's rape case, Cyberabad police chief VC Sajjanar, was Superintendent of Police in Warangal, at the time of that encounter.  In December 2008, the AP police gunned down three men accused of throwing acid on two women engineering students. The students— Swapnika and Pranitha— of the Kakatiya Institute of Technology in Warangal town were attacked after Swapnika had rejected the proposal of Srinivas, one of the accused. Srinivas Rao, 25, the main accused in the case, and his associates P Harikrishna, 24, and B Sanjay, 22, were killed in the encounter. Similar to Friday’s reported encounter, the then SP said that a police team had gone with the accused to the scene of the crime to collect evidence. However, the men reportedly tried to attack the cops with crude bombs. Sajjanar had said that the cops opened fire in self-defence, killing all three accused. Sajjanar, a low profile cop till then, earned the moniker 'the encounter cop' then. The arrests were made 48 hours within the attack on the girl and the encounter happened within days. Though the families of the accused and rights activists had questioned the encounter, Sajjanar became a local hero. A Rediff.com report from 2008 describes in detail the celebrations that took place then. It says that students of the college distributed sweets and burst crackers.  The two victims, Pranitha and Swapnika, and their families too welcomed the encounter."I am relived that Srinivas has been killed," said Devender, Swapnika's father, according to Rediff. The AP Chief Minister of the erstwhile united state at the time was Congress' (late) YS Rajashekar Reddy.

Hyderabad vet rape and murder
The four accused- Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu- were shot dead in Chatanpally village under Shadnagar police station on Friday morning.
The four men accused in the gangrape and murder of Hyderabad veterinary doctor Disha were shot dead in an reported encounter by police on Friday. The accused - Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu - were taken to Chatanpally village (the crime spot) under Shadnagar police station allegedly for evidence collection and scene reconstruction. Police claim that they killed them as they tried to take one of the guns and flee. Soon after the news came out, a large number of people gathered at the crime spot on Friday morning, raising slogans lauding the police.  Echoing popular sentiment, CPI National Secretary K Narayana supported the "encounter" and said, "We are happy that the police murdered the killers of Disha. To prevent such crimes, these actions are unavoidable. It is true that there would be law and problems if such actions are taken, but to prevent such brutal crimes these killings are necessary. We offer complete support." With the police yet to make a statement, the Telangana BJP said that they will give a response only after clarification from police. But added, "India is not a banana republic and is bound by legal and constitutional framework. Politics over crime, cannot set a right precedence." The family of the 27-year-old veterinarian, Disha*, also supported the encounter stating that it was 'justice' to them.   Disha’s father told the media, “It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. I express my gratitude towards the police and government for this. My daughter's soul must be at peace now.” Rekha Sharma, National Commission for Women on #Telangana encounter: As a common citizen I am feeling happy that this was the end we all wanted for them. Death
The four accused were killed in an alleged encounter with Hyderabad police at the crime scene between 6 and 6.30 am.
In the early hours of Friday, the nation woke up to the news that the four men who were accused in the rape and murder of a 26-year-old veterinarian from Hyderabad had been killed in an alleged encounter by Hyderabad police. As debates about whether the police’s actions were justified heated up on social media, the parents of the deceased accused have reacted to the news of the death of their sons. Speaking to the media, the prime accused Areef’s mother is visibly distraught. “I don't know what they've done. My son is gone! Of course, this is wrong. My son is gone. I am not able to speak,” she said between sobs. The mother of another accused – Shiva – was visibly shaken up as she spoke to the media. “Sir, if my son was found to be guilty, then please shoot him,” she cried into the mic. Shiva’s father on the other hand questioned why only the four accused in this particular case were given such punishments. “Others should also be punished in this manner, why haven’t they been?” However not all the parents of the accused hold the same views. “We told earlier itself to kill them instead of putting them in jail, but they should’ve at least given us a chance to see them before killing them,” says the father of accused Naveen. Earlier, Jayamma – the mother of the fourth accused, Chennakesavulu – had stated to the media that her son should be punished if found guilty. “If my son committed the crime, burn him too. My son is nothing to me. Wrong is wrong. She (victim’s mother) gave birth to a daughter after nine months. Her daughter becoming the victim of such a crime… what she must be going through,” she had earlier said. Chennakesavulu’s wife is unconsolable. “He’s left me within a year of getting married, please take me to the spot where you killed him and kill me also. I can’t live without him,” she cries. The four accused – Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu – were apprehended by the police. In the early hours of Friday morning they were taken to the spot where the crime had occurred to allegedly recreate the scene for collection of evidence. They allegedly attempted to escape by taking the guns of policemen present, and were subsequently shot in the alleged encounter. DCP Prakash Reddy told TNM that there was crossfire in which the four accused were killed, and two police officers were injured. The incident took place between 6 and 6.30 am according to the DCP.

The mother, father and sister of the deceased Hyderabad veterinarian thanked the police and Telangana government for swift action.
After the four accused in the gangrape and murder case of a vet in Hyderabad were killed in a reported encounter, the family of the deceased woman, Disha*, expressed their gratitude towards the police and the government."It has been 10 days to the day my daughter died. They killed the accused in an encounter in 10 days. I express my gratitude towards the Telangana government, the police and those who supported us. My daughter's soul must be at peace now,” Disha’s father told the media. “There should be a change in law that ensures rapists are hanged to death immediately. They should know this is what will happen to them if they even look at a woman,” Disha’s mother said. Disha’s sister also expressed gratitude towards the police, the Telangana government, the media and everyone else who supported them. “I didn’t expect that action will be taken so swiftly. We expected the case to go to court and the accused would be hanged, and justice would be served that way. We are happy, and I believe that others will now be scared to do something like this. I’m grateful for all the support; and this is the result of all the support,” the sister said. She added, “These reactions should bring about a change, and this incident should serve as an example to ensure that what happened with Disha doesn’t happen with anyone else again.” Disha’s friends and neighbours were also distributing sweets and bursting crackers. “Thank you to the government and the police. Delhi police should learn from them. We are very happy here and are distributing sweets here. We used to be scared of approaching the police earlier, but now we’re not scared anymore, so thank you,” a neighbour said. In the early hours of Friday, the four accused in the case -- Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu – were shot dead by the Telangana police in a reported encounter. The reported encounter happened at the same place where Disha was gangraped and murdered. Reacting to the reported encounter, the mother of Nirbhaya – the woman who died in the horrific gangrape in Delhi in 2012 – said that she is very happy with the news. “Police has done a great job and I demand that no action should be taken against the police personnel,” she said. Nirbhaya’s father said, “I’m glad that the family will not have to suffer the way we are. No one should raise a finger on the police, the accused would have escaped if they would have not taken this step.” On Wednesday, the Shadnagar court had remanded the four accused to seven days in police custody. The Hyderabad police on Monday had filed a petition in a local court at Shadnagar seeking 10-day custody of the accused for a more comprehensive interrogation. The court, on Wednesday, had granted a seven-day police custody of the accused. *Names changed

While scores of people gathered near the site of the reported encounter to celebrate, some cautioned against such police action.
Celebrations broke out in various parts of Hyderabad after the four accused in the gangrape and murder of a Hyderabad veterinarian were killed in a reported encounter on Friday morning.  Scores of people gathered near the site of the reported encounter, about 500 metres from the Chatanpally underpass where the burnt body of 26-year-old Disha (name changed) had been found. The bodies of the four accused are reportedly still there.  While the police have blocked the highway, the crowd has been showering flowers on the location where Disha’s body was found. The crowd has also been celebrating the deaths by bursting fireworks near the underpass, which the police have now told people to stop. A few days ago, the same police force had come under massive criticism for turning away the vet's parents citing jurisdiction. A policeman had also suggested that she may have left her house voluntarily. The crowd even lifted a few police officers on their shoulders, and shouted slogans of Jai Telangana Police’, ‘Police zindabad’. Slogans of ‘Jarigindi jarigindi nyayam jarigindi (Justice has been served) and ‘CP Zindabad’ were also heard.  A group of men gathered near the site where the four accused were shot dead cheer Telangana police for the killings. pic.twitter.com/kuY6pgyHIk — Jahnavi Reddy (@Jahnavi_R) December 6, 2019 The atmosphere outside Disha’s home was also jubilant, with neighbours and friends distributing sweets. Crackers were also burst to celebrate. With the entire neighbourhood gathered outside the home, slogans of “Telangana police ki jai ho,” rang in the air. The Telangana police were praised for their actions, and the public believes that the swift action was correct.  Indicative of the mood that the public may have lost faith in the judiciary, neighbours outside Disha’s home said that they did not expect the police to react and “serve justice” so quickly.  Neighbours outside Disha's house distribute sweets. They say justice is served.@thenewsminute pic.twitter.com/QPe1crpGcJ— Priyanka Richi (@priya_richi) December 6, 2019 Speaking to TNM, one of Disha’s neighbours said, “This should set a precedent for all other crimes in the country and deter men from even thinking about committing such heinous crimes. We hope this has brought peace to Disha's soul. We also understand that the parents of the accused are under extreme pain, but that doesn't reduce the severity of what the accused have done. If you have committed a crime, you should definitely be punished.” On November 27, Disha, a 26-year-old veterinarian doctor from Hyderabad was gangraped and killed allegedly by the four-member gang, who are natives of Narayanpet district, at Thondupally toll gate on Outer Ring Road, Shamshabad. They had been taken to the scene of the crime at Chatanpally, nearly 50 km away from Hyderabad, on Thursday to collect evidence of the crime. The reported encounter surfaced on Friday morning. Though there were celebrations, many have also questioned the killings. Many also denounced the notion that extrajudicial killings would curb crime in the country, and questioned the legalities of skirting the justice system in favour of 'vigilante justice'. ‘Miss Match’ review: Aishwarya Rajesh is wasted in this irrational romantic drama

Review
Nirmal Kumar’s film feels like it was written by someone with the right intentions before someone decided to turn it into the typical all-about-the-hero movie.
It gets annoying sometimes that no matter what the context/storyline/character sketches, in the end it is the hero, wearing sunglasses, bent-neck looks, smashing random people, who saves the day. Miss Match takes it two notches further. The movie goes from social drama, to environmental drama, to sports drama, to romantic drama, and none of the parts fit with the next. For, only in such a movie can an Asiad gold medallist be made to feel like a loser, because she isn’t like other “girls”. Siddhu/Siddharth (Uday Shankar) is a whiz kid from IIT Kharagpur, soft-spoken and shy. Maha (Aishwarya Rajesh) is a wrestling champion, outspoken, stubborn and bold (daughter of a wrestling coach played by Pradeep Rawat). Maha falls in love with Siddhu when they meet during a youth summit, and is unwavering about it. Siddhu on the other hand tries to show that they are entirely different individuals, from very different families, a mismatch. The movie tries to differentiate between two ways of living. Maha’s family is emotional and candid, but full of flaring tempers. Siddhu’s family is conservative and traditional. It is obvious from the start that Maha’s free-spirited, uninhibited way of behaving would clash with that of Siddhu’s family (who stereotypically want her to quit wrestling after marriage provoking a fight between the two families). But the story takes a different turn when Maha’s village is under threat due to a cement factory (that popular fixture in all Telugu movies that need a plot), and Siddhu, the recycling expert, has to come help Maha. No matter how cute their original storyline, they can’t do without rockstar heroes saving the day. From magically shutting down a dangerous factory by turning into a pollution control officer to taking Maha to the Asian Games (car chases/fights and all that), the hero dominates the entire second half. The wrestling champion, meanwhile, becomes coy girl clapping as the IITian pulverises goons (with rock music OST). Remember Dangal, a movie on wrestling that didn’t have one song that doesn’t further the story? But here we are, an imaginary dream song between a scientist and a wrestler, as they dance in a colourful studio somewhere. That’s how movie-makers go off target. The movie suffers from terrible editing. One moment you are watching the hero fighting random goons, another moment you are watching the Asian Games where a gold medal is at stake but Maha is “distracted” because of the hero’s presence in the stadium. (Imagine a wrestler in the Asiad finals telling the hero “I’ve already won now that you are here”). In fact, most of the dialogues feel like they have been borrowed from random scenes. Bottomline, the movie (written by Bhupathy Raja and directed by Nirmal Kumar) feels like a story that was probably written by someone with the right intentions before someone else decided to turn it into the typical all-about-the-hero movie. And then, the movie ends just as randomly as it starts – with Siddhu’s family “giving Maha one chance to learn how to behave the way women behave”. Kudos! Encounter
The Cyberabad Police Commissioner CP Sajjanar said that A1 and A4, Areef and Chennakesavulu, opened fire at the police, and the police officials were forced to retaliate.
From the National Highway 44, the spot is barely visible. But hundreds still thronged the highway, which stands on elevated ground, to catch a glimpse of the four accused who had been shot dead by the police on Friday morning. The accused were shot dead barely 500 metres away from the Chatanpally underpass, where veterinarian Disha’s (name changed) body was burnt last week, after she was gangraped allegedly by the four men. Around 1.45 pm, more than eight hours after the four of them were killed in a reported encounter, the police allowed the media into the area that had been cordoned off until then. The four bodies lay close to each other – barely a gap of 5 metres between each of them. Accused No. 1 Mohammed Areef, who according to the police, smothered and killed the vet after she was raped, could be seen holding a shot pistol gun in his right hand. In a yellow T-shirt and jeans, his body lay on the ground face-up, no wounds visible on the body, but blood underneath him suggesting that he was shot in the back. Around 3 pm, the police placed his body in a black body bag. Perpendicular to him lay the body of Accused No. 2 Jollu Shiva. Wearing a white shirt, it was evident from his body, face up, that he had been shot in the chest. A few metres away was the body of Accused No. 3, Jollu Navin, in an orange shirt. Around 10 metres away from Navin’s body lay the body of fourth accused Chennakesavulu. Wearing a dark blue shirt, he, too, had a gun in his hand. According to the Cyberabad Commissioner Sajjanar, the four accused had been taken to the Chatanpally underpass where Disha’s body was burnt, early on Friday morning. After evidence collection, around 5.45 am, the four attacked the police team consisting of 10 personnel as they were going back to the highway, Sajjanar said. They threw stones and sticks they could gather and in the following ruckus, two of them snatched guns and ran into the fields. The Cyberabad Police Commissioner CP Sajjanar said that A1 and A4, Areef and Chennakesavulu, opened fire at the police, and the police officials were forced to retaliate. “They kept firing. They continued to fire and attack despite us asking them to surrender,” he said. In the incident, two police officers named Arvind Goud and Venkateshwarulu were seriously injured, including on their heads, he added. When asked about the nature of injuries, he said, “There are no bullet wounds on the police officers.” Sajjanar further answered questions posed by reporters: “They were not handcuffed. They ganged up and assaulted us with the sticks found here. Two of them snatched weapons and fired on us. We checked later and they were dead. A1 and A4 - Areef and Chennakesavalu - had weapons. We recovered them,” the Cyberabad police commissioner told the media. When asked why the accused were brought to the spot late at night, the Commissioner said that they were brought early in the morning and not late at night, and said that the accused had hidden material evidence and the police were trying to retrieve them. “We found Disha’s phone, power bank and her watch. It was buried in a place near the underpass,” the Commissioner said. “We had to do it early in the morning because you know what happened when they were taken to the Shadnagar police station,” he said, referring to angry public trying to attack the accused when they were brought to the station. Replying to a question about the criticism from NHRC and others regarding the encounter, he said, "The law has done its duty."
