Hotel managements were ordered to procure meat from GHMC slaughterhouses only and ensure that hygienic food is prepared.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has appealed to hoteliers and the management of all hotels to take precautionary measures and ensure certain specified standards for the preparation of Haleem for the ensuing Ramzan festival in the city. Hyderabad Mayor Rammohan Naidu said that the GHMC is planning to award incentives to the best hotels for cleanliness and proper maintenance during this Ramzan festival. “Preparation of haleem should be done in a very hygienic manner and the bhattis should be kept at the ground floor only, providing sufficient parking place at the hotels and ensuring that footpaths and other public places are not encroached, to avoid traffic congestions and inconvenience to the citizens during the 40 days of Ramzan festival,” the Mayor said. He also directed all the hotel managements to procure meat from the GHMC slaughterhouses only and to strictly follow the guidelines which have been issues by the GHMC to take all fire safety, public safety measures and not throw garbage on the roads or in front of the hotels. He also asked eateries to segregate the dry and wet waste separately for easy transportation to the garbage stations. "Hyderabad city is very famous for its biryani, tea and haleem. Everyone should take proper care using good quality ingredients and take all preventive measures to keep the surroundings and the hotels neat and tidy," the Mayor siad. Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin also appealed to the hotel managements to join hands with the GHMC to maintain proper cleanliness. He also said that the GHMC enforcement team with senior officials will undertake random inspections and those who are found guilty, will face severe action. Dr Venkateshwar Reddy, Chief Veterinary Officer, gave a power point presentation about the precautionary measures to be taken while preparing haleem. Hotel Owners and representatives from Pista House, Bawarchi, Hyline, Café Bahar, Red Rose and Telangana Hotels Association Chairman T. Nagaraj have also interacted with the officials and assured them that they will extend their full cooperation. Several officials form the GHMC’s Veterinary wing, Health and Sanitation wing and Food Safety wing also participated in the meetings.

A leopard was killed in a road accident on the country's longest national highway 44 in Telangana's Indalwai of Nizamabad district. It is reported to be the fourth such incident in the Nizamabad district. The leopard was run over on Friday afternoon. On learning of the incident, forest officials shifted the dead leopard to the local veterinary clinic hospital for a post-mortem. Nizamabad Forest Divisional Officer (FDO) Venu Babu told TNM that leopard suffered severe injuries to its lungs, limbs and head, resulting in death."The leopard seems to be between 3-3.5 years old. The postmortem report is awaited," he said. According to officials, a recent census has found that there were around 55 leopards in the Nizamabad-Kamareddy area.  The Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary, spread across 130 sq km in Medak and undiveded Nizamabad districts is known for a wide variety of wildlife. However, recently there has been a rise in the number of man-animal conflicts. On January 8, a leopard died while crossing a railway track near Sirnapally of Indalwai range. Despite officials taking the wildcat to Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad for treatment, the leopard succumbed to its injuries. According to officials, out of 55 leopards in the Nizamabad -Kamareddy forest divisions area, around 15 could belong to the Indalwai range. Venu Babu claimed that out of 150 saucer and solar pits in the Nizamabad forest division, Indalwai range had as many as 25.  In February, a leopard was fatally hit along the Basar - Nizamabad highway. While one leopard died due to ill health near Ekkapally of Lingampet mandal in March, another leopard killed two calves in Kondapur of adjourning Medak district. V Mahesh Kumar, an animal conservation activist based in Nizamabad demanded that certain areas be declared animal sensitive zones, and vehicular speed be controlled. Mahesh said, "The highway vehicular speed has become a curse to wildlife, the government must construct underpasses, bridges in such dense forests, so that animals can pass around safely." However, officials told TNM that they're making arrangements to install caution boards which show the speed limit across highway road in the forest area along with setting up CCTVs at accident prone areas. Meanwhile, Friday’s leopard death has brought to light the wildcats’ behaviour. The leopard, which met with an accident in Indalwai forests was reportedly found with bruises and scratches on its body. Officials say that the leopard may have had a clash with another, hours before it met the accident. The FDO explained, "Scratches and bruises on the deceased could be because of a confrontation with other leopards. They get into clashes either for territory or food and sometimes they will also get into fights to protect their mating partners. They demarcate the area with urinal or saliva, when other leopards cross into their territory, they will get into clashes." As none of the notes is useful, I tried to deposit the cash in the deposit machine but in vain,” Aditya was quoted as saying. “I just waved the notes at the CC camera and walked out. With no idea on whom to approach, I went to a police station and lodged a complaint so that there would be some proof,” Aditya told one media outlet. Responding to his tweet, SBI said, "Currency notes entered into ATMs are checked for quality and authenticity. Hence the chances of a mutilated note being disbursed from our ATM are negligible. The Indian Meteorological Department has cautioned the people of Telangana to brace for heatwave conditions in the state. On Saturday, two districts in the state – Adilabad and Ramagundam – recorded 44 degree Celsius temperatures. Speaking to TNM, IMD scientist B Raja Rao said, “The day time temperature would continue to be like this (43-44 degree Celsius) until the onset of the monsoon. If it exceeds 44 degrees, we will declare a heat wave.” “Two days ago, Adilabad recorded 44.8 degree Celsius, which is close to 45 degree. However, the temperature plummeted the next day after a small spell of rainfall, so we didn’t declare a heatwave condition,” he added. The department also forecasted that there would be thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds in isolated parts of Adilabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Komarambheem-Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagityal, Peddapalle, Jayashankar Bhupalpalle, Bhadradri Kothagudem,Warangal, Mahabubabad districts of Telangana for the next two days. What is a heatwave? According to the National Disaster Management Authority: “Heatwave is a period of abnormally high temperatures, more than the normal maximum temperature that occurs during the summer season in the North-Western parts of India. They typically occur during the months of March and June, and sometimes extend even till July. These extreme temperatures and resultant atmospheric conditions adversely affect people living in these regions as they cause physiological stress, sometimes resulting in death.” IMD Hyderabad scientist, Dr B Raja Rao explained that heatwave can be determined when the temperature increases by 5-6 degrees beyond normal temperature. “If the temperature is 5 or 6 degree more than the normal temperature, it would be declared moderate heatwave, and if the temperature exceeds 7 degrees or more, then we declare it as severe heatwave. While these are the parameters to declare heatwave, irrespective of all these factors, when the temperature reaches 45 degrees we call it a heatwave and alert the state disaster management,” Rao stated. Action plan during Heatwave To minimize the casualties and prevent deaths in case of a heatwave, the state disaster management authority has already constituted a steering committee involving all the government departments like Medical and Health Department, Panchayat Raj Department, Rural Development Department. The department after receiving a weather alert from the Indian Meteorological department about the rising temperature, would soon disseminate the information across the state departments. The department has conducted workshops on how to handle the crisis. The department has four color-coded alerts: white alert for normal temperature, yellow alert for heatwave warning, orange alert for moderate heatwave condition, and red alert for severe heatwave condition. The department has issued specific instructions to each department in the state to prevent deaths. I & PR department: The I & PR department has been instructed to spread messages about heatwave to general public and vulnerable groups through radio, WhatsApp, press meets, Twitter and Facebook.   Medical and Health Department: The department has been instructed to equip themselves with additional supplies of medicine and material, deploy additional staff at Primary Health Centres (PHC) and Urban Health Centres (UHC) to attend the heavy influx of patients, keep emergency wards ready in all the PHCs, UHCs and hospitals, report heat stroke patients to the nodal officer on a daily basis, and expedite recording of cause of death in death certificates. Besides, the Regional Health Officers are directed to visit the PHCs and UHCs to inspect if the hospitals are prepared to admit heat stroke patients. The 108/104 ambulance services are also instructed to have adequate supply of ice packs. IV fluids and medicines. Municipal Administration and Urban Development: The MA and UD have been instructed to extend the duration of public parks for long hours, so that general public can relax and keep themselves cool. They’ve also been asked to set up electronic scrolling boards to display temperature and forecasts at junctions and activate ‘cooling centres’ – temples, libraries, schools and malls to be open for general public. Labour and Employment Department: The department has been directed to encourage employers to shift outdoor workers’ schedules away during the peak afternoons hours (12-4 pm), ensure provision of shelters, cooling areas, and ensure medicines at worksites. How to determine if the deaths are caused by heatwave The government has taken cognizance that the ex-gratia amount for the heatwave victims were exploited by a few in the past and to ensure that the funds are not misused, the department has three checklists before giving the ex-gratia: recording of maximum temperature of the place, autopsy reports, and local authority verification report. Post Karnataka polls, Amit Shah to tour Telangana before 2019 elections

Amit Shah will be touring Telangana in June.
After going all out to campaign for the BJP in Karnataka for the state's Assembly elections, party president Amit Shah will now focus on Telangana. According to the party's Telangana president K Lakshman, Shah will be touring the state in June. Lakshman said that they are yet to decide on how many days the national president would be touring. “We are having a meeting today in Delhi. We will discuss all these details in the meeting,” he said. “On May 17 and 18, we will discuss the tour routes,” Lakshman said. He also said that the BJP will be entering the Assembly elections alone and not in an alliance, and hopes to win the elections by defeating the ruling TRS party.   With the national president taking on the task to strengthen the BJP in the state, the state's party leaders are hoping to improve their fortunes in the 2019 general elections. The BJP's presence in Telangana is minimal. It has just five MLAs in the state -- including the state president. In the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh, it has already dented its chances by denying Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra. Recently, when Amit Shah visited Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, he faced the wrath of the angry Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists, who raised slogans against him and even pelted stones at his convoy for going back on their promise of SCS.  So, the BJP is now focussing on bettering its chances in Telangana. The rise of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who now aspires to become a national leader by forming the Federal Front, is another reason for Amit Shah to come in, in order to enhance the prospects of the BJP in 2019, as well as have the BJP’s presence in South India. Till March, the BJP enjoyed the status of being in power in Andhra Pradesh, when they were in an alliance with the TDP.  However, after the Finance Minister denied SCS to Andhra Pradesh, the TDP pulled out of its alliance and has accused the BJP of ‘cheating’ them. Shah previously visited Nalgonda district in Telangana last year in the same month. However, it was just a three-day visit.   Also read: I am okay with Dalit CM, but high command has to listen to MLAs choice: Siddaramaiah

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been experiencing thunderstorm and unseasonal rains for more than a week.

Nine people including three farmers died of lightning in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on Sunday, officials said. The three farmers died of lightning in Telangana's Mancherial district early in the day while six deaths were reported from Srikakulam district in north coastal Andhra. The farmers were killed in their field in Arepalli village. According to police, the farmers had gone to their fields to protect the paddy from rains. The deceased have been identified as R. Rajaiah, K. Bapu and J. Ramesh. The farmers were trying to place covers on the paddy kept in the field after cutting but did not succeed due to strong winds and rains. In the meantime, they were struck by lightning. When they did not return home, their family members went to the field and found their bodies. Meanwhile, six persons died of lightning in separate incidents in Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam district. Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds have been lashing Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts since early Sunday. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been experiencing thunderstorm and unseasonal rains for more than a week. The Met office has forecast thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds at isolated places in various districts of Telangana and coastal Andhra on Sunday and Monday. Some parts of the two states are likely to record maximum temperature between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius. Earlier this month, district officials in Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna and Nellore were kept on their toes after the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) alerted them over ‘heavy thunderstorm activity’ expected in the four districts. The APDSMA recorded such an overwhelming number of lightning strikes within a short span with the authorities terming it ‘unusual’. Fearing that the numbers could spread panic, the authorities refused to share the data related to the strikes. However, scientists from the Indian Meteorological Department have said that thunderstorms of such severity during summers is quite common. Lightning strikes and who is more vulnerable When lightning strikes the ground or an object on the ground, the discharge occurs in and along the ground surface (not deep into the ground). This creates a dangerous and potentially deadly ground current near the lightning strike. A lightning strike depends on many factors. Some places are more vulnerable to strikes than others due to the speed of the storm. Lightning need not always strike the highest given point in any area. According to experts, anyone standing on a high ground, in an open space, near water or near large metallic structures or trees are more vulnerable to lightning strikes. In 2006 (BBC News and British Medical Journal ), the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a statement, saying lightning is not attracted to people carrying mobile phones. “Cell phones, small metal items, jewellery, etc., do not attract lightning. Nothing attracts lightning. Lightning tends to strike taller objects,” said John Jensenius, a NOAA National Weather Service lightning expert. “People are struck because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. The wrong place is anywhere outside. The wrong time is anytime a thunderstorm is nearby.”   Read: Thousands of lightning strikes in 24 hours: Disaster dept alerts AP govt over thunderstorms  IANS inputs

A scientist at Hyderabad’s National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) has been placed under suspension after a girl student filed a complaint of sexual harassment against him. The accused, Dr K Bhaskarachary, is a Grade E scientist in the institute’s Food Chemistry Division. According to NIN’s website, Bhaskarachary has a Masters in Life Sciences and Ph.D. in Biochemistry. His research specialisation includes development of analytical methods and generation of databases for nutrients, non-nutrients, anti-nutrients and contaminants, and as well as dietetics. He is a recognised PhD supervisor in Nutrition and Biochemistry and would guide students. The complainant was said to be one of the students who was assigned to work under him. According to media reports, the accused allegedly sent several obscene messages to the complainant over a period of time, following which she lodged a complaint with the Director on May 10. The student also reportedly furnished screenshots of the phone messages she had received from Bhaskarachary. She is said to hail from a poor Dalit family. When TNM reached out to NIN Director Dr R Hemalatha, she said, “We have indeed received a written complaint on May 10, 2018 from one of the students of our institute against the said scientist. As per the norms of the institute, we have immediately placed the accused under suspension and a high power committee has been constituted as per the guidelines and a probe has been initiated.” The NIN’s website also states that Dr Bhaskarachary was bestowed with an Award of Excellence and was recognised as a Fellow of the Society for Biotechnology in 2011. He also won the Young Scientist award from the Nutrition Society of India (1995) and the Indian Dietetic Association (1993). He is also a guest faculty and resource person in institutes such as the Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU) and Osmania University. When TNM tried to contact Dr Bhaskarachary, his phone was switched off. Recently, the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) in Chennai came under the scanner with regard to the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against one of its adjunct professors, Sadanand Menon. A statement, signed by activists, students, media personnel and former adjunct faculty at the college, was released after attempts to get justice for the victims hit a roadblock. While ACJ justified not taking action against the professor and said they did not have the jurisdiction to do so, it said that Sadanand Menon had decided not to teach his elective course the next year.   Read: ‘Asian College of Journalism must probe Sadanand Menon’: Statement on sexual abuse allegations ACJ statement on sexual harassment allegations: Sadanand Menon not to teach next year

At around 1.30 am on Sunday that 15 juveniles in Hyderabad escaped from a rehabilitation home in the city's Saidabad area.  CCTV footage of the incident shows at least 11 minors in the wee hours of midnight, walking in the street after escaping from the home. As they are cautiously looking around and walking, one minor can be seen attempting to hot wire a two-wheeler. He then approaches another minor for help following which the duo manages to pull out the bike from the parking spot, kick start it and drive it away. The entire dramatic incident was caught on camera. Watch the video below.  #WATCH 15 prisoners escaped from Juvenile Home in Hyderabad's Saidabad. Police teams deployed in their search #Telangana (13.05.18) pic.twitter.com/rVhYqzIMTj— ANI (@ANI) May 13, 2018 All the boys were aged between 14 and 16 and the police suspect that they escaped by cutting the rods of a bathroom ventilator with a blade and later scaled the compound wall. One minor was nabbed by the police as he was trying to escape alone. Three others were caught on Monday.  Larger issues The institute is also no stranger to such kind of controversy. According to child rights activist Achyuta Rao of the Balala Hakkula Sangham (BHS), a minor was sodomised and murdered by his roommates at the same home in 2015. "Another case of sodomy had also surfaced after that, which involved a resident of the home allegedly being assaulted by a Child Welfare Committee member as he was being shifted to another home," Achyuta said. "Firstly, it is a correctional home and the children are not hardened criminals. They should be considered as minors in conflict with the law. It should only serve as a transit point," he added. Achyuta also points out that there are provisions under the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act which mandates that the home should apply for bail with the magistrate, which should be heard as soon as possible. "Since the judiciary has a system in place, it can't do anything if there are errors on the home's part in filing the petition," the activist says."The child should get a good support system over here and the environment should be better than the one outside. There is also no full-time psychologist appointed for the children and the place also lacks a complaint box, where children can directly send in their letters to higher officials," he adds. Speaking to TNM, in-charge Director for Juvenile Welfare and Correctional Services, B Shailaja said that additional security measures were put into place after the incident. "We have shifted children from the observation home to larger premises in a special home nearby. The first home had gotten cramped as there were more children and lesser rooms," she said.  Shailaja also said that the observation home, which was now empty of children, would be transformed into a drug rehabilitation facility for minors in the next 15 days. "A lot of children are addicted to drugs like whiteners and we want to reform them. An inquiry was also conducted into the incident and two night supervisors and the superintendent of the home were suspended," she added.

Gandhigiri protest: Third road in Hyd repaired by residents and named after KTR

Civic issue
Citizens came up with the ingenious idea of embarrassing the minister responsible for the maintenance of roads by renaming roads after him.
Without resorting to protests which block traffic and cause trouble to motorists, Hyderabadis have figured out a unique way to draw the attention of the authorities to get pothole ridden roads in the city repaired. Citizens have come up with the ingenious idea of embarrassing the minister responsible for the maintenance of roads by renaming roads after him. This harmless protest has been effective in eliciting the desired result, after which residents across the city who are frustrated with poor roads in their locality have been following suit and renaming roads to KTR Road – KT Rama Rao is the Minister for IT and Municipal Administration and Urban Development.   In its first success, residents of East Marredpally repaired a road by spending around Rs 4,000 of their own money and renamed it to ‘KTR-Ivanka Trump Road’. Ivanka Trump, daughter of American president Donald Trump, had visited the city in November last year to participate in the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. To create a good image of the city, the government had spent crores of rupees to revamp the existing roads, which were battered due to rains, and to beautify several areas, particularly the stretches leading to the summit’s venue. However, other roads in the city continued to remain neglected. Irked by this, Congress leader Krishank, along with a few locals, repaired the road themselves and named it KTR-Ivanka Trump Road as a mock protest. This attracted eyeballs and was widely reported. Taking note of it, the Greater Municipal Hyderabad Corporation (GHMC) authorities swung into action and repaired the road within 10 days. Taking a cue from this, residents of Hafeezpet recently followed the same strategy and renamed a road in the locality to ‘KTR-IT Park-Road’. The residents erected a banner with the road’s name which also had the message: ‘Safety at your own risk.’ Similarly, on Monday, Krishank brought to attention the plight of motorists travelling through Army Ordinance Corps (AOC) in East Marredpally. Blaming the Secunderabad Cantonment Board for not repairing the potholes on the road, residents filled the potholes with mortar and stones, and renamed the stretch ‘KTR Nirmala Sitaraman Road’. Nirmala Sitaraman is the Minister for Defence. Speaking to TNM, Krishank said, “In another month, the monsoon will begin and these roads will deteriorate further. We have made several complaints to the authorities, but all of them have been ignored. Hence we started this campaign, which is getting positive response from everyone. We are glad that the campaign has picked up elsewhere also. We will continue with the campaign until all the roads are repaired before it starts raining.” He added, “The frequent excuse that the authorities give when we complain of bad roads during monsoon is that the roads can’t be repaired while it is raining. So, we want to ensure that the roads are repaired and ready for the monsoon.” Also read: 'Safety at your own risk': Irked with bad road, Hyderabad residents name it after KTR

Tribal persons’ struggle heats up in Telangana: Adivasis to 'boycott' Lambadas

While the Adivasis are adamant in their demand for exclusion of Lambadas from ST list, several activists are suggesting that the government should initiate a "dialogue process".
All images: By arrangement
With the Adivasis decision to boycott Lambada (plain area tribes) employees from entering their hamlets and refusing their services from June 2 which happens to be Telangana formation day, undivided Adilabad that has been witnessing unrest, is again in the news. Some Adivasi groups have been demanding the exclusion of the Lambada community from the Schedule Tribe (ST) list. At the centre of the groups’ protest is the claim that the Lambadas are “cornering” their opportunities in jobs and education. Tension has been simmering ever since creation of the Telangana state brought an unexpected benefit to the Lambadas, with the state government enabling recruitments through the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) without categorisation of STs. This "offered" Lambadas an advantage when compared to other ethnic tribes. The friction escalated between the two camps in October 2017 after an incident of vandalism at the tribal museum at Jodeghat in Asifabad district, where some activists allegedly burnt the statue of a Lambada woman that was on display. This immediately drew calls for bandhs, with the Asifabad district collector’s office coming under attack when Gond Adivasis broke furniture and equipment and hurled a stone at the deputy collector’s vehicle. In early November, thousands of tribal people (Adivasis) marched from the headquarters of Indervelli mandal, Utnoor town in Adilabad district, reiterating their demand. From then, the Adivasi region has been on the boil as both groups have resorted to protests, counter-protests and public meetings.  Though the demand for the exclusion of Lambadas (a tribe that lives mainly in the plains) has its roots in the disparity in development, the ethnic people accuse the plains tribe of cornering all welfare schemes and “taking away” jobs which they claim is rightfully theirs. History Telangana has a tribal population of 31.78 lakh, which is 9.08% of the state’s population, with a total of 32 tribal communities. While Lambadas comprise 20.46 lakh of the tribal population, the remaining are from communities such as Gonds, Guthikoyas, Pardhans, Nayakpods, Kolams, Gotis and several others, which are relatively low in number. The Gond people are Adivasis, originally believed to have spread from central India to parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. They have a sizeable population and a long history of settlement in Telangana. They primarily speak Dravidian languages. Banjara Lambadas are a community that settled across the Indian subcontinent, believed to be originally from Rajasthan. While they are listed as Backward Class (BC) or Other Backward Class (OBC) in some states, they are listed as Scheduled Caste (SC) or ST in other states. Gond tribals point out that the Lambadas were included in the ST list only in 1976, during the Emergency, in what they term as unfair through a “backdoor entry". President of Adivasi Sankshema Parishath, Sunnam Venkata Ramana went to the High Court in 2011 seeking removal/exclusion of Lambadas from the ST list. Speaking to TNM, Venkata Ramana said, “It was in 1976 that they were included without following the proper procedure, and because of that, now Adivasis are in trouble.” He adds, “We are not demanding something that is against the Constitution. Their inclusion was done in unusual circumstances without following the minimum statutory requirements and so it should be declared null.” Unfair advantage “The Lambada Banjaras come from Maharashtra and settle in Telangana district and are availing all the government benefits although they are not locals. In Maharashtra, Lambadas are in BC category but in Telangana they are in ST category. Although they come from outside the state, they are somehow managing to get government jobs and are availing all the benefits under the ST quota,” said Babu Rao Gond, a tribal leader, when addressing a protest gathering. This forms the crux of the reason behind their demand to remove Lambadas from the ST list. Adivasi Mahila Sangam state General secretary, A Suguna, a Gond, reiterates the commonly held view, “The Lambadas have come from different states in the north like Maharashtra, Rajasthan and others. Despite not being tribals, they have managed to get listed under the ST category.”  She alleged, “Following their listing as ST, there is a massive inflow of their population from other states. Slowly, our lands have gone into their hands and our jobs too.” Thudumdebba, an Adivasi organisation spearheading the anti-Lambada (Lambada exclusion) movement has resolved to boycott the Lambadas. They plan to intensify their stir against Lambada teachers, govt officials, who they claim are snatching away their jobs. When asked why Adivasi organisations have decided to boycott the Lambadas, Suguna said, "We are exhausted with the government’s negligence towards us, it’s been 8 months now that we have been agitating but they're not bothered to listen to us or address our concerns. We have decided to intensify our struggle by boycotting them, we are also planning to discuss more effective protest modes." It may be recalled that in 2013, the AP High Court had ruled that Suman Rathod, a TDP MLA who represented Khanapur (ST constituency), was not a tribal.  While the Adivasis are adamant in their demand for exclusion of Lambadas from ST list, several activists are suggesting that the government should initiate a "dialogue process". Human Rights Forum (HRF) Telangana state Vice President Athram Bhujang Rao said, "Government should call all the stakeholders for dialogue involving the elected representatives.” Bhujang Rao further points out the drawbacks on the government’s side saying, "Government, instead of answering the questions raised by the Adivasis, is sending officials and police to tribal hamlets which will further worsen the situation." He said, "Adivasis struggle is an identity crisis, they were kept away from all the fields and were silent. Now, the time has changed and they want discussions to be held in a more democratic manner and inside the legislative houses.” In the wake of Adivasi groups such as Thudumdebba, Adivasi Sankshema Sangam, Adivasi Manila Sangam and Adivasi Vidyarti Sangam stepping up demands to relaunch the movement, police authorities are taking measures to prevent undesirable incidents, given the violent past. Meanwhile, Adivasis are going to hold a public meeting, Chalo Hanmakonda, in Hanmakonda of Warangal on May 19.

After confronting the victim in Banjara Hills, the accused threw acid on her for refusing his advances.
Days after an alleged stalker attacked a 23-year-old nurse in Hyderabad, the city police managed to nab him from Attipadi village in Kerala's Palakkad District. The police had earlier said that the accused, identified as 32-year-old A Pramod, and the survivor, hailed from Kerala. They also said that Pramod came to Hyderabad and hatched a plan to throw acid on the victim if she rejected his proposal. After confronting her in Banjara Hills, he threw the acid when she was heading back to her hostel after work. She suffered injuries on her back, even as the accused fled. The incident took place on May 10, around 5.30 pm. In a press release, the police said that Pramod had earlier proposed to marry the victim, but she had rejected his advances, following which he planned the attack."Immediately many teams were pressed into service for apprehending of the accused. In pursuit of the accused, a special team visited Palakkad District of Kerala and the accused was apprehended from Attipadi, a remote village," the press release states. A case was registered under Section 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or mean) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with the Banjara Hills police. Speaking to reporters, Hyderabad Commissioner Anjani Kumar said that the surffered had suffered 8 to 10% burns due to the attack, adding that her condition was now stable. He also added that Pramod had been sent to judicial remand. This follows a spate of such incidents in the recent past that have been reported from Hyderabad. In March this year, a stalker had set a minor girl on fire near Hyderabad’s Amberpet area following which the victim succumbed to her injuries at the state-run Gandhi Hospital. In January, 24-year-old B Janaki, who was working as a saleswoman in a supermarket, was killed when her colleague stabbed her at her house in Moosapet. She was being harassed for weeks, after she rejected her colleague's proposal. In December last year, 22-year-old Sandhya Rani was set on fire in full public view as she was returning home from work in the city’s Lalaguda area, for refusing the advances of a stalker who was harassing her.   Read: Ground report: Lost all hope in humanity, says family of Hyd woman killed by stalker ‘She planned to go home, instead only her body will’: Hyd woman killed by stalker

A 25-year-old first-year MSc student from the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Hyderabad, attempted suicide by setting herself on fire in the wee hours of Wednesday. The student, Neetu, hailing from Odisha told police that she didn’t do well in her studies and hence attempted to kill herself. Neetu is presently availing treatment at the state-run Osmania General Hospital. She suffered 40-50% burns, according to the doctors from the University who offered medical aid initially. According to the Gachibowli police, the incident occurred around 1 am. Police said that she attempted to kill herself twice. “Initially she set her skirt on fire but dabbed it quickly. Then, she again did the same and suffered injuries on her back, hips and legs. Fortunately, the girl rushed to the toilet which was right opposite her hostel room and sat under the water tap. Else she would have had even more serious injuries,” said a policeman. The students said that they heard cries of someone and found Neetu under the tap. The students immediately rushed her to the health care centre in the university. As the injuries were serious, she was taken to a private hospital in Gachibowli. Owing to medical expenses, she was later shifted to Osmania, police said. Speaking to TNM, a police officer said, “The girl seems depressed. When we went to take her statement, she said that she couldn’t qualify for the NET (national eligibility test) twice and hence resorted to suicide. We have not filed any case yet.” How to help someone suffering from depression When a person you know, or is close to you, is experiencing depression, the three most important things that you can offer them is love, support and a gentle but firm push towards proper professional help. And all of this needs empathy. How can you use the empathy to help them? How can you develop that empathy? Here is a list of things you can do to help them out of depression. - Show emotional support, understanding, patience and encouragement. - Speak to them, let them express, and listen to them carefully. - Never dismiss their feelings or undermine their pain. - Never ignore references to suicide. Report them to your loved one's therapist. Also read: Godavari boat mishap: 12 bodies recovered, search on to trace missing persons   - Invite your loved one out for walks, outings and other activities that they used to like. But be sure not to push them too much if they are reluctant. - Accompany them to the therapist if they ask you too. - Remind your loved one that with time and counselling, they will overcome the depression. - Do not be tough on your loved one, support them through the rough patch. - Make them laugh and show them that you care and remind them of their strengths. - Convince them to avail of professional assistance. - Arrange for hospitalisation if they are experiencing suicidal tendencies, hallucinations or delusions. - Don’t give up on the person — they might need to hear repeatedly from several people around them that they deserve to feel better.

The popular Facebook page of the Hyderabad Traffic Police has been facing the ire of several users ever since its decision to remove Harinath Reddy, commonly referred to as ‘Admin H’, from the admin post. The entire incident came to light when Harinath took to his personal profile earlier this week to say that he had offered to resign from the Hyderabad Traffic Police. “Hey brothers and sisters! I have been officially removed from the HTP page, so I want to let you know about it. After my girlfriend died in a road accident last year, I never wanted to see someone in my position, so I started posting funny and witty posts to spread awareness,” he wrote. Harinath also lamented that he had worked hard for six years to create a bond with the public, but was forced to offer his resignation due to an internal rift in the office. “The new admin is the one who is behind all this and he has gathered all negative comments on the page and submitted it to higher officials. Helping people, donating my entire salary to an orphanage and being positive always is something wrong?” Harinath asked. “I tried my best but internal politics has grown and they think I am getting all the fame which I considered as null. Thank you guys for supporting me on all social media platforms, I am overwhelmed with your love (sic),” he added. As the post gained a large amount of traction, several users began downrating the Hyderabad Traffic Police Facebook page and began trending the hashtag #BringbackAdminH. The page’s rating went down from 4.7 to 3.6 in a matter of two days. As hundreds of users began reporting the Facebook page, Harinath took to his personal account again and said, “Please don’t unfollow HTP. The page is for the general public. I already left. There is no question of going back.” Several people also messaged asking the reason for Harinath’s removal, to which the Hyderabad Traffic Police said that he was removed after a ‘departmental issue’. Speaking to TNM, Harinath said that he had received thousands of messages supporting him and was overwhelmed by the response. However, he also said that he did not want people to downrate the page as it was still a government department which was interacting with the public trying to promote road safety. Food Safety
The customer has filed a complaint with the food safety department and also with the police.
City-based businessman Maruganti Vamshikrishna Reddy and his family had one of their worst experiences at a food joint in Hyderabad. On Wednesday they went shopping at Punjagutta’s Central Mall. Tired after the shopping, they went to the Subway outlet in the mall, where Vamshi’s daughter ordered a cold fountain drink. However, when sipping on the drink she felt something odd in her mouth. On removing the substance, she realised that it was a cockroach. Shocked, Vamshi opened the cup to find four more live cockroaches in the drink. An angered Vamshi tried confronting the staff and then went into their kitchen as the staff allegedly didn’t answer his queries. He was further appalled when he allegedly found the entire kitchen infested with cockroaches and also found the staff reusing lids and cups. Later the outlet owner, identified as Sireesha, reprimanded Vamshi for entering the kitchen without permission. She also accused Vamshi of misbehaving with her. Claiming that she was making the accusations to try to cover up the issues he had pointed out, Vamshi then shot a video. The video shows her behaving rudely with him and accusing him of touching her, whereas the visuals show her trying to seize his phone while he filmed the incident. Vamshi later shared the episode, along with photographs and videos on social media, which has now gone viral.   Speaking to TNM, Vamshi says, “We went for shopping since it was my daughter’s birthday the next day. After shopping, my daughter felt thirsty and ordered a cool drink. She felt something weird while sipping on it and that’s when we saw cockroaches in the drink.” He added, “Initially I was only confronting them after seeing the untidy kitchen that was infested with cockroaches. Then this owner tried to divert the topic and made it look like I was misbehaving with her. That’s when I started filming the entire episode. She behaved very rudely. Instead of addressing the concerns raised by me, she was shooing away me. She even called the security guards several times to throw me out. When I said that I will share the photos and videos online, she said, ‘Do whatever you want, I have seen many people like you.’” Before leaving the outlet Vamshi insisted on getting the bill. Instead, the staff gave him Rs 100, he alleges. “I waited for nearly 30 minutes, asking them for a duplicate bill since we had misplaced the original. However, they made me wait and then gave me a Rs 100 note. After a lot of persuasion, the staff finally gave us the bill.” Vamshi later filed a complaint at the Punjagutta police station and also with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) food safety department. Following the complaint, the department officials said they would inspect the outlet. Food Safety Inspector Sudhakar Reddy told TNM, “We are now going to inspect the place. Appropriate action will be taken if the complaint is true.” Vamshi said that he would also approach the consumer court for the poor maintenance of the outlet and the unruly behaviour of the owner. In this WhatsApp obsessed Telangana dist, cops teach locals how to tackle fake news

Fake news
WhatsApp is popular in several interior rural areas in the state, but due to poor literacy it is tough for people to identify fake news.

On Wednesday morning, Rema Rajeshwari, Superintendent of Police of Jogulamba Gadwal district, found her phone flooded with several gory and explicit visuals, with messages that claimed that the notorious Parthi gang was in the district and kidnapping children. Swinging into action immediately, the SP ordered police officers to conduct a massive awareness campaign across the district to stop the menace of fake news. This comes after a spate of fake news related incidents in the district, triggering law and order concerns. The SP also ordered an inquiry to trace the source of the messages. TNM has managed to get those visuals but decided not to publish them, given the explicit nature of the same. It turned out that the messages had originated from a teenager in Utkuru village in Alampur mandal. The teen said that he had forwarded the messages he had received from someone else. On identifying that it was fake news, local police officials counselled the teen and arranged an instant awareness campaign in the village. In another incident, two women folk singers from Pebberu were attacked in Gattu mandal on the suspicion that they were members of a gang that had been kidnapping children from the area. Luckily, the swift intervention of the police saved the duo from getting further hurt. Identifying source of fake messages Speaking to TNM, SP Rema Rajeshwari said, “We are working on finding out the source of these messages. At present, we have sent teams to border areas of the district as the messages are in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi as well.” Three kinds of messages are in circulation, according to the police. While one refers to an interstate gang of thieves, another mentions a gang that is kidnapping children. The third kind is communally sensitive messages that are in Hindi. When asked if there is any information about where the fake messages are being circulated from, the SP said, “While Telugu and Kannada messages are apparently surfacing from Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district and other border areas, the communally sensitive messages in Hindi are apparently coming from north India.” In fact, such unconfirmed messages had flooded WhatsApp groups in the adjoining Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh since the first week of this month, which had also led to the arrest of three juveniles earlier in the week. The police said that they would take legal action if any person attempted to spread panic and unrest using rumours and fake news through social media. What is the way ahead? Social media has become a crucial source for updates and news and while it can be a great tool of engagement and information, there is always a concern in terms of the credibility of the information. WhatsApp is popular in several interior rural areas in Telangana, but due to poor literacy it is often tough for people to identify fake news, SP Rema Rajeshwari opined. “Through our interactions with the locals, we found out that people are being carried away by visuals and photographs rather than text since many cannot read,” she said. Therefore, the Jogulamba Gadwal police have decided to take up the task of carrying out an awareness campaign against fake news through the Community Outreach Policing method, supervised by the Superintendent. “Our village-level police officers will be in touch with sarpanches and different communities through WhatsApp, in coordination with our dedicated IT cell. Any suspicious messages will be immediately debunked with facts through this network,” she explained. On Wednesday, Circle Inspectors and Sub Inspectors reached out to several people across many villages. “As part of the campaign, our officials interacted with the locals and gave them information about the kind of measures that are being taken to prevent crimes. The police officers also told the people how to verify and fact-check messages,” the SP explained. She added, “Earlier, people used to panic and be afraid to step out of their homes, but following our outreach drive to curb fake news, they are happy and appreciating us saying ‘no one explained it to us in this way’.” Hoping that the move will develop awareness among people to counter fake news, the senior police officer said, “The task is big, but we hope it will definitely succeed, like our other community outreach programmes.”

According to the IMD, thunderstorms occurred over isolated parts of districts such as Sangareddy, Vikarabad, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Khammam and Medak. Speaking to TNM, Indian Meteorology Department scientist B Raja Rao said that the thunderstorms will continue till the onset of the south-west monsoon, which will mostly to take place by May-end. “We have forecasted that the south-west monsoon will touch Kerala either in the last week of May or June first week. Until then, the thunderstorms will continue to prevail in several isolated parts of the state which record severe heat.” He also said that the city is like to receive moderate rainfall on Friday. What are thunderstorms? Thunderstorms are formed due to convective clouds. Convective clouds which are the reason for thunderstorms to spread 10-15 km and also soar up to over 10 metres than the rest of clouds. They form due to excessive heat and the presence of moisture in the atmosphere, Raja Rao said.  Also read: Heatwave on the horizon for Telangana: Weatherman cautions state

Thunderstorm
The thunderstorm uprooted 19 electric poles, resulting in power outages at several places in the city for many hours.
Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds that lashed Hyderabad left two people dead on Thursday.    The thunderstorm brought the city to a standstill as many areas of Hyderabad lost power. The Azalgunj police said that one man lost his life in the area after he came in contact with a live wire and got electrocuted. Another man was reported to have been washed away in a drain in Kala Pathar, in the old city area. In another major incident, a 100-year-old tree came crashing down at the Shama Cafe at Moghalpura, leaving a few people injured. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), in a press release, said that 162 trees were uprooted across the city, with water stagnation at 38 places. It also said that 19 electric poles had collapsed which resulted in 75 complaints of power outages. Two houses also reportedly collapsed under the brunt of the wind and the rain. Many areas in old city were faced with power outages, with officials failing to restore power even hours after the storm subsided. Hyderabad Mayor Bonthu Rammohan along with senior officials, was personally monitoring the emergency situation via CCTV cameras from the Command Control Room, situated at the 7th floor in the GHMC's head office. GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy visited Red Hills, Vijay Nagar colony and other areas where trees had fallen due to heavy rains and personally monitored the situation. Emergency tams were deployed to remove the fallen trees in areas where they were obstructing the traffic. All officials have been put on alert to prepare for any untoward incidents.  The GHMC Commissioner also inspected some areas where water logging was taking place and assured citizens that officials were working on draining the water. The rains and thunderstorm led to massive traffic snarls in places such as Secunderabad, Begumpet, Khairatabad, Hitech city and Punjagutta. Several motorists were caught unaware and had to run for cover and take shelter. Nampally and Amberpet recorded the highest rainfall at 4 cm, followed by Kapra, Jubilee Hills, Malkajgiri, Himayatnagar, Musheerabad, Khairatabad, Asif Nagar and Saidabad at 3 cm. Food Safety
Despite the staff cleaning its kitchen and storage room, the food safety officials could still find cockroaches.
The Subway outlet at Hyderabad's Central Mall in the city's Panjagutta, where live cockroaches were allegedly found in a beverage, was shut down on Thursday evening after food safety officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) conducted a raid. This came one day after city-based businessman Maruganti Vamshikrishna Reddy said that he had found four live cockroaches in a beverage that he had ordered at the outlet. A video of the incident that went viral, shows a staff member of the outlet behaving rudely with him and accusing him of touching her, whereas the visuals show her trying to seize his phone while he filmed the incident. He later filed a complaint at the Punjagutta police station and with the GHMC.  Speaking to TNM earlier, Vamshi said, “We went for shopping since it was my daughter’s birthday the next day. After shopping, my daughter felt thirsty and ordered a cool drink. She felt something weird while sipping on it and that’s when we saw cockroaches in the drink.” According to reports, the officials had issued a show cause notice under the GHMC Sanitation and Hygiene Act and taken samples from kitchen and sent it to the Food Safety Lab in Nacharam. A case was also booked against the outlet. A video shot during the raid shows cockroaches in the outlet's storage room. Speaking to TNM Food Safety Inspector, Sudharshan Reddy said, "We have collected the samples and sent it for examination. We haven't closed it. The outlet owner itself said that she will close down the outlet for a week for renovation and pest control." Further action is expected to be taken. Meanwhile MBT spokesperson Amjed Ullah Khan, who had initially raised the issue with the GHMC on social media, demanded strict action against the outlet for endangering the lives of the citizens.  Alleging that close to 80% of all food outlets in the city were operating under unhygienic conditions, Khan also lamented that the GHMC did not conduct proper timely checks. The MBT leader also pointed out that the entire GHMC food safety department has only six food inspectors to check the quality of food being supplied across the city. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and other senior leaders from the state are making arrangements for the visit.
After a dramatic over-night journey, Congress and JD(S) MLA-elects from Karnataka reached Hyderabad on Friday morning in a private bus. While some legislator elects were lodged at Park Hyatt in Sri Nagar Colony, others were later shifted to Taj Krishna in Banjara Hills, according to Telangana police officers. According to reports, other locations were also being considered including Novotel and Golkonda resorts in Gandipet. While Park Hyatt is promoted by Congress leader and ex-MP Subbarami Reddy, Taj Krishna is owned by the GVK group. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and other senior leaders from the state are making arrangements for the visit.  Speaking to TNM, Madhapur DCP, A Venkateshwar Rao, confirmed that they had received information that more than 30 JD(S) MLAs were lodged at the Park Hyatt. Meanwhile, the front office at Taj Krishna confirmed that a few legislator elects were lodged at the hotel, but they did not divulge any further details.  Scenes outside Park Hyatt "We have shifted 36 of our legislators in a bus to Hyderabad to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from poaching them to defect," Janata Dal-Secular spokesman Ramesh Babu told IANS. Party leader D K Shivakumar told reporters in Hyderabad that the priority for the party was to keep its legislators safe."Our priority is to keep all our MLAs safe and intact. There is a lot of pressure on their families. So some of the legislators have been shifted to Hyderabad, while some have stayed back in Bengaluru," Shivakumar said. The Congress leader, however, refused to specify how many legislators were shifted to Hyderabad in neighbouring Telangana. On Thursday night, Congress leaders in Karnataka gave contradictory statements, with some saying that the MLA elects would be going to Kochi, while other claimed that they were off to Puducherry. But as TV channel crews followed the buses, it was evident by 1.00 am that all the MLAs from both parties were going to Hyderabad. Media channels also played visuals of the bus stopping at Jadcherla on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway early on Friday, followed by visuals of the bus crossing a toll booth near Shadnagar. Congress and JD(S) leaders claimed that the decision to go by bus in the night was taken after the Civil Aviation ministry denied permission for special flights to take off. However, Civil Aviation ministry Jayant Sinha denied the claim. A Congress source told TNM earlier that none of the airlines or groups were willing to give chartered flights, fearing 'backlash'. The decision to move MLAs in the night came after a BJP leader's relative was caught at the Shangri-La hotel in Bengaluru where JD(S) leaders were staying. The BJP currently has 104 elected members while the Congress-JD(S) alliance together have 116 MLA-elects. Further details are awaited.  Read: A night of high drama, Congress and JDS MLAs taken out of Bengaluru in buses
