Tollywood dialogue writer and director Rajasimha Tadinada, who is known for his work in films like Rudhramadevi, Bommarilu and others, was hospitalised in Mumbai on Thursday. According to reports, Rajasimha had attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills because of depression. Several media reports suggested that the reason for his depression was that he wasn’t getting work in the film industry. However, in a video uploaded by YouTube channels, Rajasimha has issued a clarification stating that he was hospitalised because of some issues he developed as a diabetic. The writer has added that nobody needs to worry about his health. “I’m fine now. Thank you to all those who were concerned about me. I will return to Hyderabad in three days and come and meet you all,” he says. Rajasimha Tadinada has written the script and dialogues for around 40 films, including the Anushka Shetty starrer Rudhramadevi. His other well-known films are Anaganaga O Dheerudu, Boni, Kalidasu, Bommarillu and Shankar Dada MBBS. However, his debut as director with Okka Ammayi Thappa turned into a damp squib as the film flopped at the box office. Rajasimha forayed into Sandalwood as a writer and penned the script for director Navneeth’s psychological thriller Bakasura, starring Rohitt and Kannada Crazy Star Ravichandran. He is also venturing into the Tamil film industry with cinematographer Natarajan Subramaniam’s film. Also read: Saamy Square first-look motion poster out

Controversy
Dr Bhaskarachary, a senior scientist at Hyderabad’s National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), was placed under suspension earlier this week.
Days after a senior scientist at Hyderabad’s National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) was placed under suspension over a complaint of sexual harassment against him, an online petition has been started seeking his permanent dismissal. The petition on Change.org has close to 500 signatures at the time of writing. “Dietitians, nutritionists and students of nutrition in various cities are harassed by this man on different levels. Cheap messages, commenting on the body and with the recent issue of harassment coming to light, it is just getting worse. This is not the first time. He has been warned, firmly spoken to and even counselled but there’s been no change,” the petition states. “He takes advantage of his position to get in touch with women. It is high time he is dismissed permanently from his position to stop this vicious cycle. Suspension doesn’t help, as he gets his job back and gets a chance to do all this again. Please help us make this change in our community,” it adds. Many people who signed the petition also said that they had faced similar experiences of misconduct from him, while stating their reasons for demanding his dismissal. While one user wrote that she received ‘filthy’ messages on WhatsApp and was forced to block him, another user wrote, “Me and my friend have encountered his misbehaviour during visits to NIN. Smartly, we could escape from him and avoided him continuously over the years to avoid such circumstances. I believe many other fellow nutritionists or women might have encountered the same. I wish the position he held had not been misused and no such incident should ever be repeated.” The accused, Dr K Bhaskarachary, is a Grade E scientist in the institute’s Food Chemistry Division. According to NIN’s website, Bhaskarachary has a Masters in Life Sciences and Ph.D. in Biochemistry. He is a recognised PhD supervisor in Nutrition and Biochemistry and guides students. The complainant is said to be one of the students who was assigned to work under him. According to media reports, the accused allegedly sent several obscene messages to the complainant over a period of time, following which she lodged a complaint with the Director on May 10.  Read: Student alleges sexual harassment at Hyderabad's NIN, scientist suspended

When asked about succeeding the Telangana CM, who is also his father, KTR said that there were no such plans.
Telangana KT Rama Rao on Friday said that the BJP could not make headway into the state as their brand of 'Hindutva' politics would not work during the elections here.  Speaking to reporters during an informal media interaction at the Secretariat in Hyderabad, KTR said that the TRS was not the 'B-Team' of the BJP or Congress.  “The TRS is an independent party. We neither fear Narendra Modi nor Rahul Gandhi. They are not TRS bosses. Telangana people are our bosses and we are accountable and answerable only to them. Where is the need for us to work as Team-B or C for any other party?” Rao was quoted as saying."Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao himself conducted Yagams and known for his dharmic life style. The strong Hindu-Muslim fabric in TRS rule is too strong for the BJP to push its Hindutva agenda. There is nothing wrong if BJP or any other party wants to expand their base in the state. The TRS will do its work and other parties too will do their work. There is no scope in Telangana for Hindutva agenda," the Minister added. When asked about succeeding the Telangana CM, who is also his father, KTR said that there were no such plans, adding that KCR would stay active in politics for at least the next 10 to 15 years. "There are no such plans and I am not over zealous. Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao will continue as the Chief Minister in the coming term too,” he said. KTR also said that his party was confident of sweeping the Assembly elections in 2019 across the state.  The Minister also stated that he had challenged Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) Chief Uttam Kumar Reddy that he would resign from politics permanently if the TRS loses in 2019.

Without the need for a floor test, two-day Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa resigned from his post after breaking into tears on Saturday in the Assembly, as he failed to get the support of the majority to form the government. As the events of the state’s nail-biting political drama came to an end, a number of the nation’s leaders came forward to express their views. The defeat of the BJP in Karnataka led many to dub it as the ‘Victory for Democracy’. Celebrating the success of the Congress, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the victory of Congress and the JD(S) was a great victory for democracy. “I salute the MLAs of Congress and JD (S) for saving the democracy. They did not get lured by sops offered by BJP nor did they feel intimidated. Although they got elected as MLAs only four days ago, the Congress and JD (S) legislators have proved that the people of Karnataka have made the right choice. They had already defeated BJP in the electoral battle and by reducing Yeddyurappa to 'ek din ka sultan' they defeated the wrong aspirations and ambitions of PM Modi and Amit Shah to grab power at all costs." Uttam Kumar Reddy said. He went on to say that this was the beginning of Congress’ victory in the 2019 elections and that nothing could ‘stop Rahul Gandhi from becoming Prime Minister of India’ now. Echoing his views, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who parted ways with the BJP in March after they refused to give Special Category Status (SCS) to the state, tweeted saying, "The resignation of BS Yeddyurappa as Chief Minister of Karnataka is the victory of Democracy. With this we could save our constitution. With this result, the entire country would be happy. As a Chief Minister of a state and as a democrat I express happiness over this." — N Chandrababu Naidu (@ncbn) May 19, 2018 Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, who aspires to build a coalition with the regional parties and thwart the BJP from forming the government in 2019 tweeted, "Democracy wins. The Congress party extended a hand of support to the JD(S) forming a coalition with the former after 14 years, after having done the same last in 2004 and announced that JD(S) chief HD Kumaraswamy would be their candidate for the post of Chief Minister. Despite, the signatures of 117 MLAs including the independent candidate, state Governor, Vajubhai Vala took a controversial decision and granted Yeddyurappa 15 days to prove majority and form the government. The Congress and JD(S) combine approached the Supreme Court objecting to this and an apex court held at midnight postponed the judgment to Friday and subsequently ordered for a floor test to be held at 4pm on Saturday. Unable to prove majority, Yeddyurappa announced his resignation at the Karnataka Assembly on Saturday. Also read: Two-day CM Yeddyurappa resigns minutes before floor test in Assembly

Gough Road closure: Telangana govt wants Army to extend deadline, submits proposals

Controversy
The issue of road closure has been a long-standing one between civilians and the Army.
File photo
The Telangana government has requested the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to extend the deadline for the closure for Gough Road in Secunderabad yet again. This came after the Local Military Authority (LMA) reiterated the stand of Minister of State for Defence, Subash Bhamre, who had told the Rajya Sabha that the Cantonment roads will be closed from May 30, 2018, as per the deadline announced earlier. Telangana Chief Secetary SK Joshi on Saturday said that a committee which was set up in April to study the issue had submitted five proposals for laying roads and elevated corridors, to serve as alternative roads, if Gough Road is shut. Joshi also held a meeting on the same issue with officials of the LMA, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) apart from officials of the Roads and Buildings (R&B), Revenue and Municipal departments. As of now, the main point of contention is the exchange of land and the compensation for it. While the state government is willing to pay a few hundred crore to the LMA for the land where the alternative roads will come up and offer some extra land away from the city as compensation, Army officials insist on a higher compensation amount for giving up the land. The issue of road closure has been a long-standing one between civilians and the Army. In 2015, the Army had closed down the arterial roads, citing security concerns. However, after pleas from several local leaders and the municipal body, they gave a deadline to create an alternate road which is being extended every six months since 2016, as the roads hadn’t been laid yet. Though the Gough Road is now open for public, nonetheless, the restrictions on civilians continue to prevail. Vehicles will not be allowed from 10 pm to 7 am, except for ambulances. The closure of roads affects hundreds of residents living in areas abutting the AOC like Marredpally, Neredmet, Anandbagh, Yapral, Sainikpuri, Safilguda and Ammuguda, among several others. Meanwhile, civilians are also embroiled in another conflict with the Army in Secunderabad. In the last week of April, citizens in the city’s Yapral area took to the streets, irked with the LMA’s decision to shut off roads to civilians, turning an 800-metre ride into an 8-km detour. The locals alleged that the road was shut off so the LMA officials could enjoy playing golf and watch movies at the RSI Club situated in the area.   Read: 8 km detour for 800 metre ride: Hyd citizens hope MoD will stop Army blocking roads'Why close road to play golf?' In her letter, the student said that a pond near the Medchal RTO office was dying and required urgent intervention by officials.
Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister KT Rama Rao on Saturday took note of a letter by a school student, seeking the restoration and beautification of a water body near her house. The girl, Niyati, a Class 7 student of St Ann’s High School in Hyderabad said that she was a resident of NCL Sindhu, situated near the Medchal highway. In her letter, the student said that a pond near the Medchal RTO office was dying and required urgent intervention by officials. "This is to bring to your kind attention that the nearby residents are trying relentlessly to prevent the pond from further decay but in vain. Rapid growth of human habitation has turned the pond into a cesspool. Apparently, the pond has become a favourite spot for garbage dumping and sewage discharge and polluted water has led to the growth of water hyacinth covering almost half of it," Niyati wrote in the letter."The foul smell emanating from the pond has aggravated the problem for the localities near the pond. The condition has deteriorated over the years. The pond has not been cleaned for several months and has also turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes, posing a risk to our health," she added. Stating that the water body almost dries up during summer, she requested the Municipal Minister to intervene and save and later beautify the pond. Responding to the letter on Twitter, KTR said, "Thanks Niyati for your concern about the neighbourhood pond. Request Medchal Collector and officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to jointly address the issue and make efforts to beautify the lake." Hunger has no religion: For 6 years, Hyd resident Azhar Maqsusi has fed those in need

Azhar, along with NGOs is now running daily food programmes in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Raichur and Tandur.
By Mohammed Shafeeq Homeless beggars, ragpickers and labourers sitting with plates on a mat are waiting under a flyover. As the clock strikes 12.30 pm, a slim man appears on the scene and starts serving hot rice and dal. Dabeerpura flyover in the old city has been witnessing this every day since 2012 and not a single day goes without the hungry gathering there for lunch or the man not serving them food. Meet Syed Osman Azhar Maqsusi, who works with unflinching zeal to satiate the hunger of the needy with apt slogan 'hunger has no religion'. As someone who lost his father at the age of four and who himself experienced the pangs of hunger, Azhar understands their pangs and is ready to do whatever possible to alleviate their suffering. It was a chance encounter with a homeless woman near the same flyover six years ago which motivated him to launch the free food programme. "Lakshmi was crying due to hunger. I arranged food for her and decided to do everything within my limited means to remove the hunger of as many people as possible," recalled the 36-year-old to IANS. Initially, his wife used to cook the food at home and he used to bring the same to flyover for serving the needy. Later, he started cooking under the flyover to save the cost on transportation."It started with 30-35 people and today more than 150 people are being provided food in Hyderabad," said Azhar, who now runs the Sani Welfare Foundation and has hired two cooks. Three years ago, he extended this work to Gandhi Hospital, the biggest government-run facility in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. A van of the foundation transports food for 150-200 people every day. The Foundation along with NGOs is also running daily food programmes in Bengaluru, Guwahati, Raichur and Tandur. Azhar is happy that the work which he started alone has motivated many individuals and organizations. "Today you can see many people distributing free food among the needy at various places in the city," says Azhar with a sense of achievement. He, however, believes that his dream will come true only when hunger is eliminated from this country and the world. "There should be nothing called hunger," says Azhar. He runs a Plaster-of-Paris unit near Dabeerpura and spends a few hours every morning and evening there. "The rest of the time I spend in arranging food at both the places," said Azhar, who is helped by his brother, his cousin and a couple of volunteers on weekends. As Azhar sat in his shop, a donor arrived with three bags of rice on his two-wheeler and Azhar himself unloaded the bags. Last month, he was invited by actor Salman Khan to Mumbai for an event of his foundation "Being Human". Selected as one of the six real-life heroes from across the country, Azhar had conversation and photoshoot with the actor. The social worker was earlier on a show 'Aaj ki raat hai zindagi' hosted by Amitabh Bacchan. Various organizations have also honoured him. Azhar, however, remained down to earth. "I don't have an office or staff. There is no change in my lifestyle." He doesn't collect funds. "If people come with donations in the form of rice and dal, I accept it. I don't accept cash unless the donor is not in a position to bring rice or dal," he said. Third among the four siblings, he dropped out of school when he was in fifth standard and started working as a labourer."We used to live in my grandfather's house. He also had a big family to look after. We used to get food once a day and sometimes even that was not available. But whatever may be the situation, we should remain thankful to the almighty Allah." For Azhar, the biggest inspiration is his mother, who struggled to bring them up. He believes that Allah is arranging food for the hungry and the needy through him."It doesn't matter who is coming to eat. All I know is they are hungry. It's in their destiny. ‘Dane dane pe likha hai khane wale ka naam’ (Every crumb you get to eat has your name on it)," adds Azhar. ‘Going cashless is driving us into debt,’ allege pre-paid taxi drivers at Hyd airport

Dissent is brewing among a section of drivers at Hyderabad airport ever since the police decided to digitise payments.

"I haven't gotten paid properly for more than a month now. Since you have boarded my cab on a Friday evening, I may or may not get this full amount only by Monday evening," laments Mohammed*, as he looks at a receipt."By the time GST and other fees for digital transfers get cut, the money I make for 10 trips is only equivalent to the money I made for 8 trips earlier," he adds. There is dissent brewing among a section of drivers at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), who run pre-paid taxis, ever since the Shamshabad Traffic Police's decision to 'digitise' the payment process.  Drivers allege that the Hyderabad Traffic Police has been 'stealing' their money, ever since a new system was put into place, around 40 days ago.  Earlier, customers had to line up at the police counter at the airport, take a receipt, and pay the cab drivers the fixed amount once they reach their destination.  However, as many people sought to pay with their cards, the police personnel manning the booth now take the payment whether by cash or card and transfer it to the driver's account later based on the receipts."We don't know how to run our families because the payments are always late and never made in full. We also have to make timely payments to financers through whom we buy the car. They harass us a lot if we fail to do so," says Mohammed. "They insist that the car has to be new and also be registered under the driver's name, or they would not let us operate the vehicle at the airport. For example, the widow of a driver who recently died has been trying to change the registration to her name and make another family member drive the car, which the officials are not accepting. They have had no source of revenue for 7 months now due to this," he adds. There are roughly 179 such pre-paid taxi vehicles, with over 500 families dependent on the drivers, who drive the cars in two shifts.    While TNM spoke to several cab drivers, all of them wished to remain anonymous, stating that they feared a backlash from the Traffic ACP, RGI Airport Division, for speaking up. Rising debt The drivers allege that as per a Government Order (GO), they are not allowed to use second-hand vehicles and only must get new vehicles to register themselves at the counter."However, the traffic police take six months to verify the documents during which time we can't drive the vehicle around and also can't repay our EMI. The drivers' union is also not very helpful as we suspect that they are colluding with the Traffic ACP," another driver said on the condition of anonymity. "The union leaders, the showroom which provides the cars at a discount and police officials have formed a nexus and are looting us," he added. Shamshad*, a long-time driver, has a tragic tale to tell. "My sister is under tremendous amounts of pain as she is suffering from fourth-stage cancer. My mother is blind due to old age and my father is dead. I'm the sole breadwinner for my family and despite working long hours, I have to see them suffer every single day," he says. "Earlier, I would get cash in a matter of minutes after dropping the customer, but now I have to beg for my own hard-earned money. They are eating away at least 35% of the total money I used to make, making it difficult to pay for my sister's treatment," he adds.  He also says that he does not have enough money to pay the school fees for his children.  The cab drivers also lament that ATMs in the city often run dry and they have great difficulty getting their hands on cash. "We can swipe cards for diesel, but for most other things, we need to withdraw cash. Before we know it, we have crossed the stipulated limit and we are charged extra for each withdrawal," says Akbar*, another cab driver. No redressal mechanism The drivers allege that they have no one to complain to, as they fear the ACP."We are convinced that he is corrupt and we are scared to approach him. He says that even if we complain to the DCP, we have to drive the car in his jurisdiction only and he will 'handle' us," alleges one driver."There have been days where I didn't have money for diesel and parking at the airport, so I just had to leave the car for 2 to 3 days till I got my money. Even though we don't get the full amount at once, we can't question them. They shoo us away and ask us to speak to the ACP, who is never ready to support us," says Shamshad."Recently, after we pursued the state government repeatedly, they increased the rates of the pre-paid taxis per km. However, since this latest scheme was brought in, now we are facing difficulties again," Mohammed adds. They also say that their vehicles are suspended or barred from entering the airport for months together for every small violation, which only drives them into deeper debt. TNM has reached out to the DCP for a comment and this copy will be updated as and when the response is received.  *Names changed on request

Citizens in Secunderabad’s Cantonment area have been protesting against the closure of roads for several years now.

In a major victory for residents of Secunderabad, who were protesting the decision of the Local Military Authority (LMA) to block off several arterial roads, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Sunday ordered all Cantonment roads to be reopened. "Based on the meeting convened by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman with Members of Parliament and elected Vice Presidents of all 62 Cantonment Boards on May 4, 2018, on the issues relating to Cantonments, a detailed review was undertaken by the Ministry on various issues, in particular those relating to closure of roads in the Cantonments," a press release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) states."Sitharaman has also reviewed the matter with Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, Defence Secretary Shri Sanjay Mitra and senior officers of the Ministry. Based on the review undertaken by Sitharaman, as a first step, the following was decided," it added. The MoD decided to firstly reopen all closed roads in the Cantonments immediately."The issue of closure of individual roads will be reviewed de novo, in conformity with the provisions as laid down, and any closure of roads to be undertaken, will be done only after following the due procedure. A simplified detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will shortly be issued to jointly address the needs of the local public and the military establishment. All other issues raised in the meeting were deliberated in detail and a time bound action plan is being prepared in consultation with all stakeholders," the press release stated.  The announcement has come as a boost to citizens in Secunderabad’s Cantonment area, who have been protesting against the closure of roads for several years now. "At last, our fight to open all roads from the past four years gave rich dividends. The cause is exposed the way it should have been," said S Chandrasekhar from Open Secunderabad Cantonment All Roads Community (OSCAR). In the last week of April, citizens in the city’s Yapral area took to the streets, irked with the LMA's decision to shut off roads to civilians, turning an 800-metre ride into an 8-km detour. The locals alleged that the road was shut off so the LMA officials could enjoy playing golf and watch movies at the RSI Club situated in the area. Earlier this month, several MPs and Vice Presidents of Cantonment Boards across the country spoke of "tragedies" that civilians living around military stations have to go through and urged the government to amend an archaic British era law relating to the administration of such area. Malla Reddy, the MP from Malkajgiri in Telangana, folded his hands and pleaded before the army not to treat people in Secunderabad Cantonment Board, which has the highest number of civilian population, "like Pakistanis"."Why is there unnecessary fencing and diversion of the roads all the time?" he asked. Telangana's Rythu Bandhu scheme helping realtors instead of farmers: Kodandaram

"We have seen people coming in swanky SUVs to take Rythu Bandhu cheques," Kodandaram alleged.
Telangana Jana Samiti chief Professor M. Kodandaram on Sunday hit out at the Telangana government's flagship scheme, Rythu Bandhu, and said that it was helping realtors instead of farmers. Kodandaram was speaking to reporters in Warangal, where he suggested that the state government could have given ATM-like cards to the farmers, to purchase the required material for agriculture. “The uncultivated land is the property of realtors who use it for business purposes. We have seen people coming in swanky SUVs to take Rythu Bandhu cheques. As a result of this, Rs 1,720 crore is going to realtors and non-land cultivating owners This is proof enough that there are loopholes in the scheme and we call upon the government to revise it and ensure that it benefits only the farmers.” he was quoted as saying."The data clearly shows that financial assistance was also given for uncultivated lands. This has benefited realtors and rich people who purchased large chunks of rural lands much in advance. This has defeated the very purpose of the scheme. It’s high time that the government plugged the loop holes in the scheme and extended the benefit to the really needy," he added. Earlier this month, the Telangana government launched a new scheme in which the farmers in the state will get Rs 8,000 per acre each, every year, as crop investment support. Launching the programme titled 'Rythu Bandhu', Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao claimed that Telangana is the first state in India to implement a farmer investment support scheme. The government plans to spend Rs 12,000 crore every year under this scheme, benefiting 58 lakh farmers. The financial assistance will be for two crops each year. The Chief Minister told a public meeting at Indira Nagar in Karimnagar district that under the first phase, the government has made Rs 6,000 crore available in the banks. KCR, as Rao is popularly known, distributed cheques among the farmers to formally launch the scheme.  Read: 'Why are tenant farmers left out?': Experts fume at Telangana's Rythu Bandhu scheme  IANS inputs

In Hyderabad, eat out at your own risk: City lacks food safety inspectors

Food Safety
Despite rising complaints, there are just three officials employed by the department to oversee various aspects of food safety in the entire city.

As the population in Hyderabad continues to mushroom thanks to expanding IT companies and the creation of jobs, food outlets and eateries too have been growing in scale. However, it turns out there are no food safety inspectors in the city to oversee their functioning and to monitor if these restaurants are following the food safety and hygiene standards or not. Presently, there are two gazetted food inspectors and one second-grade commissioner holding higher offices. But due to the lack of food safety inspectors, these officials are burdened with the task of addressing the grievances, and also inspect hotels and restaurants. Due to the severe crunch in staff, the officers have been unable to inspect restaurants and other food outlets, despite the rising complaints. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is flooded with complaints, but very few of them are addressed, unless it’s a ‘high-profile’ one. Recently, the presence of cockroaches in a beverage drink at a food outlet created quite a flutter. Food safety officials were forced to act on the complaint immediately only because the complainant was well connected. According to the officials, the department, on an average, receives at least four complaints from each circle. There are 30 circles in the GHMC - 5 in the east zone, which includes Kapra, Hayathnagar, Uppal, LB Nagar and Saroor Nagar; 5 in the west zone: Serilingampally, Chandanagar, RC Puram and Patancheruvu, Moosapet and Kukkatpally; 6 in the south zone: Malakpet, Santoshnagar, Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Falaknuma and Rajendra Nagar; 6 in the north zone: Quthbullapur, Gajularamaram, Alwal, Malkajgiri, Secunderabad and Begumpet;  8 in the central zone: Mehdipatnam, Karwan, Goshamahal, Musheerabad, Amberpet, Khairtabad, Jubilee Hills and Yousufguda. “A majority of our complaints come on the phone, but we cannot address them immediately. What can we do? We are just three people expected to cover an entire city,” said an official, who did not wish to be identified. Though there are five zones in GHMC, the three officers monitor just the central, east and south zones. The west zone and north zone are completely ignored. “Besides doing our official duty, we additionally have to oversee protocol arrangements of the Chief Minister, President, Vice-President, etc. It’s not just one thing we are doing. We also have to go to the courts. Each officer is handling at least 30 cases from the court and has to be present when the court summons us,” the official added. He also said that there are at least 117 cases pending in court, for which they have to be present every Wednesday.  According to the officer, before 2010, there were 7 food safety inspectors. This number dropped to 5 in 2012, after two of them retired. The number further dwindled to four in 2015. Among the four, one officer was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for indulging in corruption. “For the past three years, just three of us are overseeing everything. The government should employ food inspectors and reduce our burden,” the officer said. Also read: Cockroach horror in Subway outlet: Hyd customer finds live ones in cold beverage

Police suspect that the woman, who was the third wife of a man named Haider had been killed by him.
In yet another shocking crime, a 30-year-old woman was brutally murdered in Hyderabad, allegedly by her husband. Her body was found wrapped in a huge plastic cover that had been sealed with tape, at a railway station in Dabeerpura. The deceased has been identified as Zeba Naaz. Her husband, Akbar Ali Khan alias Haider, who is absconding, allegedly killed her and dumped her body and fled two days ago. Police suspect that the accused could have fled to Dubai.    The reason for the murder is yet to be found. Zeba was a resident of King Koti, while her husband resided in Farhat Nagar. The accused was working in Dubai until recently. Two days ago, Zeba's mother filed a missing complaint in Narayanaguda police station, and that’s how police were able to identify the deceased. Police found the body at around 1 am on Sunday, after locals noticed blood oozing out of the huge plastic cover and alerted the police. After retrieving the body, police sent it for autopsy to the state-run Osmania General Hospital. In the autopsy, it was revealed that the victim had suffered head injuries. Zeba had three sons. It is reported that Zeba was the third wife of the accused. Police couldn’t trace the accused. However, they interrogated his parents, who reside in Farhat Nagar, Dabeerpura.       Speaking to TNM, Dabeerpura Inspector Venkanna Naik said, “We interrogated the accused’s parents. They claim that they don’t know his whereabouts. We suspect that he must have fled to Dubai after committing the crime. We are not sure about it though. We are searching for him in the city.” Police have registered a case under IPC section 300. This incident is similar to the sensational murder in February of the 8-month-pregnant woman I'm Gachibowli, who was chopped into pieces and packed in two gunny bags.

It is speculated that by abstaining from the ceremony, KCR is projecting himself as an anti-BJP and anti-Congress leader.
Signaling his displeasure over the alliance between Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) will not be attending the swearing-in ceremony of his new ally, JD(S) chief HD Kumaraswamy. Instead, the CM will visit Bengaluru on Tuesday evening to congratulate the Chief Minister elect at his residence. The Chief Minister’s office informed that owing to his earlier commitments he wouldn’t be able to attend the swearing-in-ceremony on Wednesday. The office added that hence the CM had decided that he would visit Bengaluru and congratulate Kumaraswamy a day-before he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. However, it is speculated that by not attending the ceremony the Chief Minister wants to project himself as a leader who is against both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. In Karnataka, the JD(S) and Congress have formed a post poll alliance and will be facing a trust vote soon. BJP leader BS Yedyurappa could not prove his majority and resigned as Chief Minister before the floor test on Saturday. The swearing-in-ceremony has a long list of Chief Ministers and leaders, who oppose the BJP and have positioned themselves as alternatives to national parties.  The eminent guests include: Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, BSP supremo Mayawati (coalition partner of the JD(S)) and RJD chief Tejaswi Yadav, DMK working president MK Stalin, actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan, Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu among many others. The event of course will have the presence of Congress party president Rahul Gandhi and the party’s former president Sonia Gandhi.  Though KCR and his son KT Rama Rao were invited for the event, but by shunning the ceremony, KCR wants to send a message that his vision for 2019 election is formation of a federal front devoid of national parties like the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. KCR aspires to build a federal front, by stitching a coalition with regional parties like JD(S), Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Samajwadi Party. In this regard, he made a visit to Kolkata, announced his grand plan after meeting the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu, DMK chief MK Stalin. Days before the Karnataka election, he visited Bengaluru and lent his moral support to JD(S) to win the elections. The distressed farmers from Maharashtra said they wanted to avail the benefits of Telangana’s newly introduced farmer investment subsidy scheme.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has earned praise from the farmers of neighbouring Maharashtra for his newly introduced farmer investment subsidy scheme – Rythu Bandhu. Distressed Maharashtra farmers living in the villages bordering Telangana made an appeal to the CM asking him to integrate their villages into Telangana so that they too could avail the benefits, according to News 18. A week ago, a forum of sarpanches – Sarpanch Sanghatan Dharmabad, comprising sarpanches from 40 villages from Nanded district, Maharashtra shared their ordeal over the poor farmer policies in Maharashtra and expressed their wish to be integrated into Telangana. Under the leadership of Baburao Ganpathrao, leader of the forum, they gave a representation to Nizamabad MLA Goverdhan Baji Reddy sharing their admiration for the Telangana CM and made an appeal to include them in the state. They further requested an appointment to meet Nizamabad MP Kalvakuntla Kavitha, who is also the daughter of the CM. Rythu Bandhu is a farmer investment subsidy scheme, a first-of-its-kind agriculture scheme that will benefit farmers. As per the scheme, the government gives an amount of Rs 4,000 per acre to the farmer before the crop as investment. According to the government, a total of 57.33 lakh farmers will benefit from the scheme as it will help them in buying pesticides and other materials necessary for agriculture. The government has already distributed the land passbooks through Revenue and other departments. The government plans to spend Rs 12,000 crore every year under this scheme by providing financial assistance of Rs 8,000 for two crops each year. The Chief Minister at a public meeting in Indira Nagar, Karimnagar district announced that under the first phase, the government has made Rs 6,000 crore available in the banks. While several farmers have appreciated the scheme, critics and the opposition parties have criticised the scheme as it benefits only land-owning farmers and not tenant farmers, who require this scheme the most. According to them, 13% of the agricultural land in the state is cultivated by tenant farmers. Among the several politicians who criticised the CM for splurging funds on the rich land-owning farmers, the latest to attack KCR was Telangana Jana Samiti chief Professor M Kodandaram. Kodandram said that the flagship scheme of the government was helping realtors instead of farmers. Alleging that Rs 1,720 crore from the scheme was going to realtors and non-land cultivating owners, he asked the government to revise the scheme and ensure that it benefitted only the farmers. KCR, as the CM is popularly known, distributed cheques to farmers to formally launch the scheme. Also read: 'Why are tenant farmers left out?': Experts fume at Telangana's Rythu Bandhu scheme

"The TRS as a party does not believe in north-south divide," she clarified.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) is confident that the proposed Federal Front will emerge as a strong alternative political platform before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and will be a "game changer". The formation of the Federal Front -- an anti-BJP and anti-Congress platform mooted by TRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao -- is under process, his daughter and party MP K. Kavitha said on Tuesday."Our country needs an alternative political platform which is non-BJP and non-Congress. The Federal Front is an idea to get into an alliance wherein both these parties did not perform to the expectations of the people," she told reporters at the Indian Women's Press Corps (IWPC) in New Delhi. Kavitha, the first woman MP from Telangana who represents Nizamabad, said that the party supremo was in talks with like-minded people and the front agenda will soon be put before the public."The TRS as a party does not believe in north-south divide. KCR has reached out to not just southern leaders but also Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav as well. The situation and equation will determine who all are going to be part of this platform," she said. On TRS's equation with the BJP, Kavitha said that the TRS has maintained cordial relations with the Centre and not with an individual party in power."KCR believes that the state should always have a working relationship with the central government. We are the youngest state (in India) and we have a working relationship with the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will continue because it is essential," Kavitha said. Asked about extending support to any national party, especially the BJP, Kavitha clarified that TRS stands as a strong regional party and won't go for coalition with either of the two big political parties."Why should we be close to the BJP? We have always been at arms length from both the BJP and the Congress."  As for KCR's presence at the swearing-in of H D Devegowda as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, Kavitha said the Telangana Chief Minister has already met him in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The Chief Minister's office in Hyderabad confirmed that Rao will not be able to attend the ceremony due to some official engagements. However, informed sources said, Rao did not want to share the dias with Congress leaders and thus met Kumaraswamy a day earlier.

The complainant said that Ravindra was also allegedly drunk, as he was returning from the birthday celebrations of Jr NTR.
The Jubilee Hills police in Hyderabad have registered a case against Tollywood director KS Ravindra, who allegedly indulged in rash driving on May 20, when he was returning from the birthday celebrations of actor Jr NTR. The case was registered based on a complaint filed by a resident of the city, Harmender Singh, who alleged that Ravindra was driving in an inebriated condition, and even picked up a fight after he hit Singh's vehicle.  Singh also told the police that the car being driven by the director was a red Volvo and the incident took place at around 11 pm near Cafe Abbott, which is located in Jubilee Hills.   Singh's parents were present in the car at the time of the accident and he also posted pictures of the damage to his vehicle on social media. In a Facebook post detailing the incident, Singh also said, "It is a shame on such a big celebrity, who has actually done a big mistake, instead of apologising,he  has run away." Meanwhile, the Jubilee Hills police said that they had registered a case against the director but were yet to establish if he was drunk at the time of the incident."We have sent our team to his house the K S Ravindra is absconding from his house and the city and we are trying to trace his whereabouts. Once he is found we will serve him a notice. We have registered a case against him under section 297 of the IPC for rash and negligent driving," Jubilee Hills SHO P Chandra Shekar was quoted as saying.   Drunken driving continues to be on the rise in Hyderabad as 1,699 persons were sent to prison by the Hyderabad Traffic Police in the first four months of the year alone. The officials filed 9,648 chargesheets and imposed fines amounting to Rs 2.53 crore during the same period.  69 driving licenses were cancelled until April after the owners were caught driving drunk.  Read: 1,699 arrests in 4 months: Drunken driving continues to be on the rise in Hyderabad

Controversy
The decision to reopen the roads comes after a meeting convened by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
File photo
Residents in Secunderabad breathed a sigh of relief as several roads which were shut down by the Local Military Authority (LMA) were reopened after recent orders issued by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This comes after protests by locals for several years, with things reaching a tipping point. In a press release, the Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad confirmed that the Valerian School gate, Eagle Chowk gate, Bison Dwar, Holy Trinity Church gate, Hakimpet gate and Hanuman Temple Balaji Nagar gate had been opened. The night restrictions on the four AOC roads – Entrenchment Road, Gough Road, Wellington Road and Ordinance Road – were also lifted.   The federation also demanded that permanent blockages be removed soon from Lakdawala gate, Ammuguda junction, the area below the RK Puram Flyover and other roads in the MCEME area."FNECS wishes to thank each and every ordinary citizen who, through letters, e-mails, tweets, WhatsApp messages, signature campaigns, has brought their plight to the notice of the authorities and forced them to take notice of the problem and resolve it. Today is a step forward for each of them. FNECS hopes that the bonhomie and goodwill generated by the opening of closed roads will lead to a period of civil-military cooperation and co-existence with mutual respect," the press release stated. However, mild tension prevailed on Wednesday morning as LMA authorities did not allow joggers into the Wellington road, leading to AOC. However, they later allowed the citizens to pass. Speaking to TNM, SCB Vice President J Ramakrishna said, "All the roads are open now. The ones which are obstructed with permanent structures and gates will be opened in a day or two, as they have to be demolished." The Army authorities had raised a permanent wall and closed the thoroughfare at Doveton in Bolarum, which used to connect Yapral and Bolarum. This road was crucial for the students and residents of Alwal to reach Valerian Grammar School. The decision to reopen the roads comes after a meeting convened by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman with Members of Parliament and elected Vice Presidents of all 62 Cantonment Boards on May 4, 2018. The meeting had discussed issues relating to Cantonments, and a detailed review was undertaken by the ministry on various issues, in particular those relating to closure of roads in the Cantonments. All other issues raised in the meeting were deliberated in detail and a time bound action plan is being prepared in consultation with all stakeholders," a press release stated.  Read: 'Why close road to play golf?'
