Condolence
Through a Facebook post, Radhika said that she knows the pain of losing a son.
Activist Radhika Vemula, mother of Rohith Vemula, offered condolences to former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and his family over the death of his 21-year-son Bandaru Vaishnav. According to reports, Vaishnav succumbed to a massive heart attack. Through a Facebook post, Radhika Vemula shared, “My deepest condolences to Mr Bandaru Dattatreya and family from the bottom of My Heart. As I know the pain when someone lost their son, I hope you will fine. Sorry for you loss. Jai Bhim (sic).” Reacting to the post, Rohith’s younger brother, Raja Vemula, said, “Amma being Amma (Mother being mother).” Bandaru Dattatreya was one of the accused in the death of Rohith Vemula, a Dalit PhD scholar from the University of Hyderabad who had committed suicide in January 2016 due to alleged caste discrimination. Other than Dattatreya, others accused in Rohith’s death include University of Hyderabad (UoH) Vice Chancellor P Appa Rao. The case was registered under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for abetment of suicide. Rohith was expelled from the varsity’s hostel along with four other Dalit students belonging to the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) after they were found guilty by the executive committee in the assault of former ABVP president N Susheel Kumar. Susheel’s brother, a BJP leader, wrote to Bandaru Dattatreya stating that ASA was involved in ‘casteist’ and ‘anti-national’ activities, following which the MP had written to then HRD Minister Smriti Irani. His letter had sparked off a chain of events that eventually led to Rohith’s suicide. Earlier this year, the BJP MP was at the centre of a controversy when the Lok Sabha Speaker nominated him as a member of the University Court. The University Court is a body comprising HoDs, Deans, Vice-Chancellor and Lok Sabha members who oversee the annual audit reports and the annual accounts of the university. The ASA had condemned the decision of the Lok Sabha, stating that it reflected the anti-Dalit agenda of the BJP government.

Two more people were killed in separate incidents in Telangana after locals severely thrashed them, suspecting that they were robbers, due to fake news doing the rounds on social media and WhatsApp. The first incident took place at Jiyapally village in Bibinagar mandal, close to Hyderabad city, where a 33-year-old auto driver was allegedly lynched by a mob late on Tuesday night.  The man, identified as Nimmala Balakrishna, had gone to visit a relative and was in an inebriated state and walking alone, when locals caught and thrashed him on the suspicion that he was a thief. He succumbed to his injuries while being shifted for treatment.   The second incident took place at Chengal village in Nizamabad district's Bheemgal mandal. Locals who feared for their lives after rumours of a robber gang did the rounds, attacked a tribal man, Malavath Devya, who later died while undergoing treatment at a Hyderabad hospital. Another tribal person was also beaten along with Devya and he is presently undergoing treatment.  Following the death, Kamareddy superintendent of police N. Swetha and Nizamabad commissioner of police Kartikeya appealed to people against getting carried away by messages on social media. Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy also addressed mediapersons on Wednesday and said that there were no inter-state gangs that were active in Telangana and assured people that they need not take law in their own hands. “In both cases, the victims were innocent and not related to any gang. When they were caught by the locals and questioned, they could not give satisfactory answers and were killed,” Reddy was quoted as saying."You need to trust the police and we are doing all that we can to ensure that law is enforced. Don’t take law in your hands. We are strengthening the social media monitoring cell and also training officials to identify the source of these messages. We will soon be setting up Twitter and Facebook pages for all local police stations so that we are accessible,” the DGP told reporters. For the past few months, a fake message has been doing the rounds that a "Pardhi gang", a notorious group, have entered Telugu states with the intention of kidnapping children. The fake news has created panic in many districts with several incidents of people being attacked on the suspicion that they belong to the Pardhi gang. Police across districts have gone on to issue a clarification that there is no movement of any such group and people should not believe in any such rumours.  Read:  Arrests, videos and clarifications: AP, Telangana cops up efforts to tackle fake news In this WhatsApp obsessed Telangana dist, cops teach locals how to tackle fake news Child kidnapping video spreading panic in Tamil Nadu is actually from Pakistan

Telangana CM refers to expelled Cong legislator as 'MLA', latter seeks privileges back

"As the CM himself called me an MLA, I demand that all provisions due to me be restored immediately," Reddy demanded.
Expelled Congress MLA Komatireddy Venkata Reddy on Wednesday sarcastically expressed gratitude that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had recognised him as a legislator while extending birthday wishes to him in a letter.  Pointing out that the letter addresses him as the 'Nalgonda MLA', Reddy asked KCR why his protocol and security were not restored if he was recognised as a legislator by the Chief Minister.  “The CM greeted me today by sending a letter. In that letter, he called me an MLA. Even though the High Court annulled expulsion of SA Sampath Kumar and myself from the Assembly and directed the Assembly authorities and the state government to restore our membership of the House, so far no decision has been taken by the government in that regard. As today the CM himself called me an MLA, I demand that all provisions due to me be restored immediately considering me as a legislator,” Reddy told reporters at his residence in Hyderabad. Earlier this year, offering relief to two Congress legislators expelled from the Telangana Assembly, the Hyderabad High Court restored their membership and directed the state government to do the same. However, TRS leaders had challenged the decision in court.  Earlier, the HC directed the Election Commission not to issue poll schedule for bye-elections in their constituencies for six months. Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and SA Sampath Kumar had approached the court challenging their suspension from the House and also a gazette issued by the Legislature Secretary notifying vacancy for Nalgonda and Alampur (SC) Assembly constituencies. The court then directed the Legislature Secretary to produce video footage of the incidents that took place during Governor ESL Narasimhan's address to the joint session of Assembly and Legislative Council on March 12. The opposition Congress members tried to disrupt the Governor's address on the first day of the budget session of the state legislature. Amid the ruckus, the Congress members threw headphones, injuring Council Chairman K. Swami Goud in his eye. The next day, the Assembly passed a resolution expelling two Congress members and suspending 11 others for the rest of the session. Venkata Reddy, along with another Congress MLA Sampath Kumar, were the two members who were expelled.   IANS inputs

The man was rescued just in time by the police. He was later shifted to a rehab centre.
A man with mental health problems was thrashed by a mob in Pahadishareef of Hyderabad over rumours that he was member of a deadly interstate dacoit gang – Pardhi gang. However, with the timely intervention of the police, the victim was saved from the agitated mob. In the horrific video being shared on social media, the victim is stripped and repeatedly thrashed with sticks and PVC pipes by an angry mob, who question his intention and ask him to reveal his identity. Police registered a case against the main perpetrator, Venu Goud, who brutally thrashed the victim with sticks and pipes. Cases against other unidentified accused who were part of the mob were also filed. The victim, after being treated in a hospital, was sent to Ananda Ashramam in Chanchalguda. Speaking to TNM, Pahadishareef Inspector, P Lakshmikant Reddy said, “The incident happened around 4 pm. We received a call about a commotion, about someone trying to scare a woman by trying to a fling a stone at her. Soon, the man was surrounded. Before we could reach the spot, the man was stripped and beaten badly. He couldn’t speak... He has mental health issues. We immediately rushed him to a hospital and filed a case against the mob involved in the crime.” He added, “This is unacceptable, for people to take law in their hands. It just took five minutes for us to reach the spot. If there was any delay he would have been lynched. We have been cautioning people against the fake rumours, yet they continue to resort to mob justice even if the person is outnumbered.” Menace of fake news   The entire state and even neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is plagued with the menace of fake news and rumours of the Pardhi gang on prowl. Disturbing videos of a man’s throat being slit, claiming that the perpetrators are Pardhi gang, are being shared to ‘caution’ people. These hoax videos and rumours are leading to mob violence and are claiming lives of innocents. On Wednesday, two people were killed in Telangana over these rumours. While one victim was an auto-driver from Jiyapally village from Bibinagar mandal, the other was an Adivasi man, who was mistaken for a thief by villagers of Chengal in Nizamabad. Combating fake news With the fake news menace spiraling out of hand, the Telangana Director General of Police M Mahender Reddy has directed the Superintendents of each district to hold workshops in every village on how to identify fake news, and also reassure people that there is no presence of any dacoit gang in the state. Police are even arresting the scaremongers who are spreading such fake news and videos, without authenticating them. Further, to curtail the menace, police personnel are being trained to track down the source of these hoax messages. The DGP also said that they would be opening Twitter and Facebook pages for all the police station, through which the dwellers can reach out to police and authenticate such videos. Hyderabad reported two suspected cases of the Nipah virus, as two people, including one person who recently travelled to Kerala on a tour were isolated and their samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Telangana Director of Medical Education Dr K Ramesh Reddy said that there was no need to panic and that the samples were taken just to be safe. "One among the two suspected cases went to Kerala. I spoke to National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) officials who are in Kerala who said that the place the man has been to is hundreds of kilometers away from localities where Nipah virus cases are reported. So chances for him to test positive are less. We are fully geared up to handle emergencies," Dr Ramesh Reddy was quoted as saying.  He also said that protective suits have been ordered to ensure that none of the hospital's staff members are affected.  Media reports add that awareness is also being spread in the rural areas of the state, with NGOs asking people not to eat fruits with bite marks on them, or even those which have dropped from trees. The number of confirmed deaths due to Nipah infection in Kerala now stands at 11, (8 in Kozhikode, 3 in Malappuram), while one more is suspected to have died of Nipah virus. Although the number of patients coming for treatment with symptoms of Nipah virus infection has gone down, Kozhikode Collector UV Jose has banned all public meetings and even training courses, including tuitions, till May 31 to avoid assembly of people. The University of Calicut on Thursday announced postponement of all examinations listed for this week. A public service examination has also been deferred in view of the current situation in the district. The Health Department said on Thursday that a total of 160 samples were sent for testing to Pune. Of the 22 results that came, 14 are positive. Adding to the 14, a woman nursing student at Kozhikode is reported to have become the latest person to test positive for the infection. The Kozhikode Medical College has 136 patients and nearby Malappuram district 24 patients under observation. A large number of medical professionals and health experts deputed by the Centre, state government and the private sector are working in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. They are meeting those under observation, besides running awareness programmes, an official said. Transmission of Nipah virus takes place through direct contact with infected bats, pigs or other Nipah-infected persons.  IANS inputs

Strong winds on Thursday evening disrupted the services of the Hyderabad Metro Rail for around half an hour as a banner fell from a hoarding, on to the overhead electric wires above the tracks. The banner landed on the wires between the stations of JNTU and Kukatpally at around 5 30 pm, following which serves were halted till around 6 pm, leaving commuters stranded on their respective trains during this period. Maintenance and Operation staff of the L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Limited (L&TMRH) worked swiftly to clear the poster."We regret inconvenience caused due to disruption in services from Ameerpet - Miyapur - Ameerpet due to falling of an advertisement flex on Over Head Equipment (OHE), because of heavy winds at JNTU. Normal services have resumed. We thank our commuters for their understanding," L&TMRH said in a statement. “There was a 30-minute disruption to services as the flex fell on the OHE (Overhead Equipment). The maintenance staff removed the flex following due process during the rain and lightning,” Hyderabad Metro Rail managing director N V S Reddy was quoted as saying. This was not the first time that such an incident was taking place in Hyderabad, as an advertisement banner fell on the overhead power lines due to the strong winds on May 2 at Begumpet, disrupting services for about 30 minutes. According to media reports, as many as 300 to 400 hoardings are very near to Metro Rail Over Head Traction and metro tracks covering the stretch from Miyapur to Nagole. Speaking to the media earlier this month, NVS Reddy said that the 16-km stretch between Ameerpet and LB Nagar as part of Corridor-I would be completed by July this year, while the work between Ameerpet and Hitec City will be done by October. Meanwhile, works related to Corridor-II between JBS and MGBS are expected to finish early next year. The 30 km-long first phase from Nagole to Miyapur was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 28 last year and has 24 stations, which covers a large part of the city.   Read: Hyderabad Metro Rail to now have 'Ladies Special Coach' in each train   tnm

Pictures shared by activists show large earth movers and other heavy machinery at work on the spot, indiscriminately dumping mud near the walls of the fort.

Activists in Hyderabad are up in arms over the ongoing construction work for a golf course at  Naya Qila, adjacent to the city's iconic Golconda fort. Pictures of the construction work shared with the media by activists show large earth movers and other heavy machinery at work on the spot, indiscriminately dumping mud near the walls of the fort. Armed with photos, activists have written to the Union Tourism Minister over the 'devastation' by the Hyderabad Golf Association and alleged that it was done with the 'concurrence' of officials from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Staff at the golf course argue with ASI Hyderabad officials Naya Qila, which translates to New Fort, was an extended portion of the famous Golconda Fort built by the Qutb Shahi dynasty and is home to several structures, including one of India's oldest Baobab trees and the Naya Qila talab (lake)."This has been going on since 2001, but the latest development is really worrying. They have so many security personnel and workers at the spot, and they are not caring for our pleas, even though the ASI clerk tried to stop them," alleges activist Lubna Sarwath."Under the guise of 'adopt a heritage', the history of Hyderabad is being destroyed," she adds. Background It was in 2011 that the in-principle approval was given by the ASI's headquarters in New Delhi for the golf course at Naya Qila."In spite of resistance, 50 acres inside Naya Qila was handed over to the Hyderabad Golf Association for cultivation of grass. Eventually, the then Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) handed over 180 acres to the association, including 105 acres inside the Naya Qila compound," Lubna alleges. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between the two parties to "develop the area and promote tourism". Several activists began moving court and they also contended that it was a violation of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, which states that only ASI officials can guard the premises."Official correspondence later shows that ASI officials admitted that this place was not suitable for golf and was located inside a protected monument. They also acknowledged that the entire 76 acres of the Naya Qila talab had been encroached upon. All these documents have been submitted to the court," Lubna says. In March last year, Lubna had filed a PIL on the issue, following which the Hyderabad High Court had issued notices to the concerned officials."They dumped mud and even created golf holes on the lake. They also built multiple golf tees and ramps on the fort's walls. The walls were built wide enough for chariots back in the day, but it is being used for golf today," Lubna says."The lake also had terracotta pipes underneath to transfer water to the Persian-style garden nearby. Even this was blasted and replaced with a cement culvert and pipes. They also blasted a moat wall and created an entrance, so that golf players can walk directly into Naya Qila. All this was approved by the ASI," she adds. Activists also say that the fort was on the tentative list to make it to the list of World Heritage Sites, but the chances now are slim."Nothing was done despite all the pressure. Our prayer to the court even now is that the golf course must be evicted and opened to the public. We must preserve our precious heritage, which has the potential of attracting global footfall and eventually generating revenue and employment," Lubna says. Today, the entrance of the Naya Qila is guarded by many security personnel. Although visitor entry is still permitted, one is asked to write their name and mobile number in a register and even cameras can be confiscated in some cases. One can visit the Baobab tree, but several restrictions are in place. Heavy machinery entering the Naya Qila gate "It has become a place only for the elite now and even a little resistance from the visitor attracts surveillance," Lubna alleges. The court case is also yet to come up for hearing again. TNM has contacted the Hyderabad Golf Association for a response.  Read: The Naya Qila in Hyderabad: A Lost Paradise

Local residents near Kondapur's Masjid Banda area allege that they are having trouble falling asleep, as a massive construction project adjacent to their homes is indulging in heavy work late into the night.  "This has been happening for almost a year, but only began to get worse over the last five to six months," says Praneet Kandarpa, a local resident, living adjacent to the construction project being undertaken by Aparna Constructions and Estates Pvt. Ltd. Praneet went live on Facebook at around 12:30 am on Friday morning, which showed that construction activity was going on in full swing at Aparna Serene Park, despite orders to stop work between 11 pm and 5 am. "Despite repeated complaints, nothing has happened. I took the video from my roof and even called the police. The cops have warned the site manager a few times in the past, while I have complained over the phone," Praneet says. "Last night, the policeman on patrol duty was also not very responsive and seemed hesitant if he could make them stop the construction. However, they still visited the spot and after shouting at them from my roof, they stopped. Again at around 3 am, they started working," Praneet alleged. He also said that the locals approached DS Prasad, one of the directors of Aparna, who assured them that action would be taken, but to no avail. "Despite the police responding on social media and ordering immediate action and cops coming and telling them to stop, they had the audacity to restart as soon as the policemen left," Praneet alleged. Speaking to TNM, Sub-Inspector Dharmesh from the Gachibowli Police Station said, "The permission to construct in the night is generally granted by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Commissioner of Police. However, if the construction project is situated close to a residential colony, then permission is generally not given."  He also added that he would look into the allegations and check if the company had permission to carry out construction activity in the night.  When contacted, an official from Aparna said that they generally adhered to the timings stipulated by the government. "We have stopped the late-night work after it was brought to our notice earlier. On Thursday, as there was heavy rain, two slabs were to be completed, which is why the work was extended," the official said.  Prior complaints This is not the first time that this particular construction project is in the news.  In October last year, local residents filed a police complaint, alleging that Aparna Constructions obstructed the natural flow of water in the area, which resulted in major waterlogging in front of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), which is situated nearby. The Professor CR Rao road, which connects areas of Gachibowli to Serlingampally, witnessed massive waterlogging that month, as drainage water stood knee-high outside the main gate of UoH. The complainant alleged that constructors noticed that their cellar was getting flooded due to the rain and used sand bags to block and divert the water.  However, the company had denied all allegations. In a statement, Rakesh Reddy, Director of Aparna Constructions & Estates Pvt Ltd. had said, “We would like to categorically clarify that there is no natural water canal or nala that passes through our projects and we clear all our building debris responsibly and ethically."  Read: Hyderabad residents file police complaint against construction company for flooding UoH road

Even after 50 years, this Adivasi hamlet in Telangana does not have road or school

Except for electricity and one water pump, Keshavarao Kunta is deprived of all the basic facilities, including a road and a school.
Five-year-old Arjun will be enrolled in primary school this July. While his parents, belonging to the Adivasi community Kolam, are glad that their son will be getting an education, their happiness comes at a cost – they have to leave their adored son under the care of his grandparents. This sad tale is true not of Arjun’s family alone, but of the 20 Adivasi families living in Keshavarao Kunta in Adilabad district of Telangana. This Adivasi village and other hamlets surrounding it have been deprived of all the basic resources like a road and a primary school, as they are located deep inside the forest. Though the village has been in existence for more than 50 years, only recently did the authorities sanction a water pump for the village. The Adivasi families who want to send their children to school have only two choices: leave them under the care of relatives, if any, in towns that have a school or enrol them in a government hostel. Luckily, Arjun’s grandparents reside in a town and are willing to take care of him while he does his schooling. However, Arjun’s parents are not too happy about it. They worry that raising their naughty son would take a toll on the old couple’s health. A helpless Kumra Sone Rao, who is unwilling to separate from his son, shares, “My parents are very old. I am supposed to take care of them, but as I have my own family and my livelihood depends on agriculture, I am settled in Keshavarao Kunta. They don’t want to live here and suffer like the rest of us. So they are in a town which has all the facilities. I am in a helpless situation. This year my son should be enrolled in school and we had no choice but to ask my parents if they can take care of him until he finishes his primary school.” He adds, “I do not wish to cause them any trouble, but since there is no school here, I am forced to send him there.” Government apathy? The residents of Keshavarao Kunta have made numerous appeals and submitted representations for at least a primary school to be opened in the village, so that their children can go to school and be raised in their own care. However, these appeals have remained unheard. Pointing to his kids who are playing, Bheemrao, another villager and father of three, says, “These kids are playing now, but when school starts we won’t be able to see them.” The village’s tribal chieftain Venkati, whose grandfather was the first one to settle in Keshavarao Kunta, says, “It has been 50 years since this small settlement expanded into a village. But it continues to remain the same as it was earlier, except for electricity.” Though the government has not been paying heed to their plight, the villagers of Keshavarao Kunta have been relentless in their struggle to achieve basic amenities for their village. Venkati and other villagers submitted a representation to the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) authorities again in December 2017 with three major demands: provide safe drinking water, lay roads and build a primary school in the vicinity. Out of these three demands, the authorities fulfilled the demand to provide safe drinking water. The fight for the other amenities continue. For several decades, the villagers have continued to rely on the small well in the forest, which fortunately never dried up. However, the villagers were worried that the well might dry up due to the swelling population and hence made a demand for a drinking water pump. About the hamlet Keshavarao Kunta, which is surrounded by forest, falls under the Salevadu gram panchayat of Utnoor mandal. The village was named after Venkati’s grandfather, Keshavarao, who was the first to settle in the hamlet. Gradually Adivasis from nearby areas shifted to agriculture and settled down in the area. “Initially there were only 3-4 families in the forest. But several others moved in here to make a livelihood through farming,” shares Sone Rao. The village was electrified about 20 years ago. However, besides that no other development has taken place. Struggle for hand pump Although there are around 60 people in the village, the entire village had been relying on a small well in the village. The villagers had made several appeals and written numerous petitions asking the authorities to dig a borewell to create an alternate water source as the village was expanding. After a long struggle, the authorities set up a hand pump just a few days ago. A relieved Venkati says, “We had been demanding a water pump for a long time. Earlier we were few in number and we could manage with the well. But the population has been swelling, so it had become a dire need.” However, the villagers consider it only a partial success as their two other demands – road and primary school – are yet to be fulfilled by the government. The Adivasis live precarious lives. With no roads, they rely on the hope that nobody has a medical emergency. “Before someone’s health worsens, we take them to the hospital. We don’t wait until the last moment. Even in the case of pregnancies, we don’t take any chances. Most often we move the pregnant woman to some acquaintance or relative’s house, which has access to a hospital,” Sone Rao shares. But this gamble always doesn’t pay off. “A couple of elders died on the way while we were taking them to hospital on a bullock cart,” Sone Rao says. Demand for road The village doesn’t have any transportation because of the lack of roads. Share autos are available, but they come only occasionally. They make their final stop at Valgonda and don’t proceed further. So, the villagers are forced to walk some 2-3 km on the kacha road through the forest. Sharing their plight, Bheemrao says, “Getting our provisions in the first week of the month is a huge task. All the villagers take one bullock cart and get the ration for the entire village. Except for bullock carts, no other transport can take us to the nearby town. We badly need roads.” It is not just the villagers of Keshavarao Kunta who have been making these demands; the people in the neighbouring hamlet of Vadgalpur (B) also have the same plea. The authorities have promised the village a school and also laying of a tar road. But they say that laying roads inside the forest involves a lot of hassle as the forest department was objecting to it. “The forest department will not give permission for laying roads since the area is deep inside the forest. Getting permission isn’t easy. But we will work it out,” says Revenue Development Officer of Utnoor Jagadeeshwar Reddy.

‘Telangana govt only helping the rich’: 9 farmer unions support Rythu Bandhu protests

Protest
The farmers are planning to block the highway from Khammam to Karimnagar as a mark of protest.
At least nine farmer unions have lent their support to the protest, in which the highway from Khammam to Karimnagar in Telangana will be blocked on May 31, against the government’ Rythu Bandhu scheme not being extended to tenant and adivasi farmers. The unions have threatened that if the government doesn’t pay heed to their demands, they will take out a massive protest akin to the Maharashtra farmers’ protest, which saw lakhs of farmers march to Mumbai.   The Rythu Bandhu scheme is a farmer investment scheme recently launched in Telangana. According to it, the government gives Rs 4,000 as incentive for each acre of land as investment for the crop. However, this scheme is restricted only to the land owning farmers. Under the scheme, the government has identified 57.33 lakh land-owning farmers, who can avail its benefits. For this flagship programme, the government intends to spend Rs 12,000 crore every year. Already Rs 6,000 crore has been released for it. Besides, extending the Rythu Bandhu scheme to tenant and Adivasi farmers, the other demands in the farmers’ charter includes: Give additional 50% subsidy on input cost and guaranteeing the Minimum Support Price. Implement debt relief scheme in Telangana. Give identity card and loans to all the tenant farmers. Give pattas to all Adivasi farmers, who cleared the forest areas and cultivated them. Give 3 acres of land to Dalit farmers and landless farmers. Implement the Land Reforms Act 2013. Provide compensation of Rs 6 lakh to the families of the farmers who committed suicide.  Addressing the media on Friday, Vissa Kiran, from Rythu Swarajya Vedika, said that the actual farmers, that is the tenant farmers in the state, are in distress and that the government has been aiding the already rich, land-owning farmers. Slamming the government’s “tall claims” of it being a one-of-its-kind scheme in the country, Kiran noted that the Karnataka and Maharashtra governments provide better subsidies on major crops like pulses and grains.   “If you see the ratio of farmers who committed suicide, unable to pay their debts, it is the tenant farmers who have killed themselves, due to the lack of proper policies which could aid them. Instead of helping them, the government is helping the already developed section, who owns these lands but lease them out. The scheme is helping only the well-off people,” Kiran said. He further demanded that the government implement a ‘debt relief’ scheme alike what is there in Kerala, which prevents farmers from committing suicide. As per the debt relief scheme introduced in Kerala, the farmer can approach the Debt Relief Commission when she/he is unable to repay the debt. The government then, in return, will aid the farmer by repaying the loan. Another farmer union leader, Sayanna, General Secretary of Telangana Rythanga Samithi, said, “In our country, Telangana ranks as second in farmer suicides. Just by introducing a pointless scheme, which benefits the farmers engaged in farming, the government can’t proclaim themselves as a pro-farmer government.”

Authorities in Hyderabad on Friday said that there was nothing to worry about the two suspected cases of Nipah virus reported from the city, as the samples of the patients tested negative. Two persons, including one who visited Kerala recently, were admitted to hospitals in Hyderabad with suspected Nipah virus infection and their samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune. Telangana Director of Medical Education Dr K Ramesh Reddy had earlier said that there was no need to panic and that the samples were taken just to be safe.  Even though both samples have tested negative, Telangana health authorities have advised people to avoid visiting Kerala. K. Shankar, director, Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) said on Friday that people should postpone their plans to visit Kerala in view of the situation here. He said people should avoid visiting affected areas. Officials of Medical and Health Department also said that they were advising people not to visit Kerala at least till the situation comes under control. The authorities are conducting campaigns in residential colonies to create awareness among people about Nipah virus and also to advise them against visiting Kerala. They were also screening people at airport, railway and bus stations for suspected symptoms of the dreaded virus. Telangana DME Dr K Ramesh Reddy on Thursday said samples of two persons were sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. One of them returned from Kerala with suspected symptoms and he had been isolated at IPM. Motkupally Narasimhulu also said that the future of the TDP in Telangana was bleak, unless drastic steps were taken.
Senior Telangana TDP leader Motkupally Narasimhulu on Friday lashed out at party supremo and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrbabu Naidu and alleged that there was a conspiracy to remove him from the party. Narasimhulu didn't attend the TDP's 'Mahanadu' in Hyderabad and also said that he was being insulted and sidelined because he was a Dalit, as Naidu had not given him five minutes even though he spent close to 30 years in the party. Terming the chief minister 'anti-Dalit', Narasimhulu told reporters, ‘’I have worked hard for TDP and it took a toll on my health. Yet, I was ignored for Mahanadu and was not invited." He also remarked that Naidu barely visited Telangana after he had shifted his base to Amaravati. “I took blows for Naidu, I have trusted him. If he comes to here once in six months what is the situation of party workers?” he asked. He also said that the future of the TDP in Telangana was bleak, unless drastic steps were taken. In January this year, Narasimhulu triggered a controversy after he suggested that the Telangana unit of the party should “merge with the TRS”. The leader was speaking to mediapersons on the occasion of the 22nd death anniversary of former Chief Minister and TDP founder NT Rama Rao. “The TDP in Telangana is in dire straits today. I will also say that there is a need to come out of this trouble, so that we can go forward and save the party. People are saying that the TDP in Telangana is getting dissolved by the day, and this is troubling me. Even if one thinks about mitigating it, no one seems ready to salvage it. This also is painful to me,” Narasimhulu said. “Telangana Chief Minister KCR was also from our party only. Many ministers in the cabinet have worked under Naidu at one point...I think that Naidu and KCR should be like brothers and merge the Telangana unit of the TDP into the TRS,” he added. Meanwhile, arguing for the merger, Narasimhulu also said, “It is better than the shame of going extinct. Chandrababu Naidu will get a good name if he helps the alliance, as a person who helped his friend.” “I’m not saying this with any political motive. No matter who the political leaders are, we should merge into the TRS, so that people in Telangana and Andhra can live peacefully and co-exist,” he concluded.   Read: ‘Telangana TDP should merge with TRS’: Senior leader triggers controversy

Chandrasekhar Rao, who represents the Gajwel constituency in the district as a legislator, expressed shock over the ‘horrible’ accident. He directed officials to provide better medical treatment to the injured. He conveyed his condolences to the members of the bereaved families. Controversy
11 roads have been opened to the civilians so far, while 14 more continue to be closed.
Malkajgiri MP Malla Reddy on Saturday urged officials of the Local Military Authority (LMA) in Secunderabad to reopen the remaining 14 roads out of the total 25 roads which were closed to civilians in the city's cantonment area over the years. A delegation led by the Lok Sabha MP met OSD to General Officer-Commanding (GOC), Telangana and Andhra Sub Area (TASA), who assured them that all roads would be opened soon. 11 roads have been opened to the civilians so far. “We have insisted that army officials reopen the roads as the ministry of defence issued orders to the effect. If the roads are not reopened by Monday, we will take up the issue with Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on May 29 in New Delhi,” Malla Reddy told ToI. “There are several sensitive units within the AOC and security is a concern. The various units heads are discussing the issue and we will open all the roads within a week, as we have to re-set the timings for physical training,” an LMA official was quoted as saying. Members of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) were also present at the meeting. The decision to reopen the roads comes after a meeting convened by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman with Members of Parliament and elected Vice Presidents of all 62 Cantonment Boards on May 4, 2018. This also comes after protests by locals in Secunderabad for several years, with things reaching a tipping point. However, mild tension prevails as LMA authorities are allegedly not allowing morning walkers and joggers into the Wellington road, leading to AOC, citing security concern. The meeting with Sitharaman had discussed issues relating to Cantonments, and a detailed review was undertaken by the ministry on various issues, in particular those relating to closure of roads in the Cantonments. The MoD decided to firstly reopen all closed roads in the Cantonments immediately.  Read: After years of conflict, army reopens roads in Secunderabad cantonment

The Forum of IT Professionals, a group representing IT professionals in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, on Saturday held a meet attended by several techies and released a declaration. The first state-level convention of the group, which is assisting retrenched techies, demanded that the Telangana government must protect the IT and ITeS sector by ordering companies to implement labour laws. A 27-member executive committee was also elected during the meet. “For a nation like India, with a large portion of the young generation associated with the knowledge economy and millions planning their career to be a part of the same, it makes it all the more important that stability is ensured in lives of the workforce and the industry,” the declaration states. “Automation is taking over many functions and tasks that were performed by IT professionals manually. Due to restrictive means of terminating employees by tagging them as non-performers, companies are denying them opportunity elsewhere, reducing their wages and not providing adequate employment. We demand the labour department to ensure the implementation of labour laws in IT, IT&ES industry and the state government must issues a white paper on the same,” Kiran Chandra, president of union of IT professionals, was quoted as saying. The IT employees also proposed to form a trade union, a move which was welcomed by many. Last year,  several IT companies in India like Verizon and Tech Mahindra were reported to have laid off hundreds of employees across the country, with the worst affected said to be employees in the Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices.   Towards the end of December, ForIT had also filed a petition with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the alleged "inhuman practices" adopted by companies while laying off employees. The forum also filed a case in the Hyderabad High Court, which is presently being heard.  Read:'Inhuman practices' adopted by IT companies for layoffs: Hyd techies group moves NHRC   Verizon layoffs: 52 IT professionals file petition at Hyderabad High Court

Hyderabad pilots eco-friendly building made of recycled plastic and bamboo, at a park

The structure is said to be waterproof, fireproof and termite-proof.
In a unique initiative, citizens in Hyderabad will soon be able to experience the interiors of an office made with recycled plastic and bamboo.  The structure, which is going to serve as the office of a public park in the city's Kukatpally area, was taken up as a pilot project by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)."The idea was to make something innovative and eco-friendly. We were working on this idea over the past year-and-a-half, and we were in touch with manufacturers across the country," said Prashant Lingam, one of the founders of Bamboo House India. Bamboo House India seeks to showcase that recycling scrap can be put to functional use in public spaces and is not limited to street art."The structure is made of half plastic and half bamboo and is fireproof, waterproof and termite-proof. We went one step ahead. The flooring tiles are also made with recycled plastic," Prashant said. “A rough figure would be to say that we consumed 10 lakh polythene covers to build this structure. The roofing sheet is made with recycled polythene covers and PET bottles and it is much sturdier than other materials. It also does not emit anything toxic as the fumes are released when the plastic is processed before it comes to us.  We got the test results and double checked the same," he added.  Most of the scrap was made in Gujarat, Prashant said. "They have been making small sheds and structures like that but nothing had been done so far in the south. We feared that the room might heat up but the temperature actually went down by 2-4 degree Celsius," he said."Across the country, several manufacturers are working on this building material but there is no combination of ideas. Some are making only tiles, while others are only making walls. Our idea was to combine everything," he added. The pilot project was supported by GHMC West Zone Zonal Commissioner Hari Chandana Dasari. The municipal body is looking to inaugurate the structure in the first or second week of June. "We are also looking at making a public toilet module and are in the process of constructing few pilots, using plastic as a substitute to replace walls and roofing sheets," Prashant said.  Bamboo House India is known for constructing eco-friendly houses not made of bricks, cement and steel, but entirely made out of bamboo. However, it is now looking at promoting recycled plastic."We are trying to get people to shift from bamboo houses to recycled plastic, but people are not open to change. They don't understand recycled plastic and think that it is not eco-friendly. We have pinned our hopes on the GHMC to promote this as well," he said.

At the meeting, a frail Seshanavaratnam gathered the strength to walk up to the minister with the help of his personal staff.
A day after a photo of Telangana's Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Minister KT Rama Rao with an octogenarian woman went viral, the latter said that her grievance had been addressed. “Long live KTR. May God give him strength to help many more people. I am very happy that he has immediately responded to my grievance and addressed it. The young minister is very quick in action (sic),” said Seshanavaratnam, the woman who stole the show at Friday’s Mana Nagaram or 'Town Hall' meeting. At the meeting, a frail Seshanavaratnam gathered the strength to walk up to the minister with the help of his personal staff and told KTR about her grievances. The octogenarian said the owners of a restaurant in her locality troubled the residents a lot, and their efforts to get the issue resolved were not successful."Yesterday, I went to Mana Nagaram program of KTR and he was kind enough to pay special attention to me and direct the officials to look into the problem,” Seshanavaratnam said. KTR then asked Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) West Zone Zonal Commissioner Harichandana Dasari and Chief City Planner Devender Reddy to act immediately on the issue. A team of officials from the GHMC inspected the complainant's residence in KPHB Colony, where they found that the kitchen of the 'Kritunga Restaurant' was being operated in a closed down lower-income group (LIG) residential apartment. The officials who carried out the inspection said that heat and a pungent odour that was being generated due to the kitchen had become extremely unbearable for occupants of the other apartments in the same complex. The huge gas cylinders used for cooking also posed danger, officials said. As the operations of the restaurant were in violation of regulations, the GHMC team closed it down and sealed the premises. Harichandana said that the restaurant did not have a trade licence and running the kitchen was in violation of fire safety norms. Seshanavaratnam's son Gopi said the restaurant had been a problem for six years. The restaurant's management would allegedly cite a court order which had nothing to do with the premises when questioned, according to Gopi. He added that his mother and the residents of other apartments were very happy after the kitchen was closed. Mana Nagaram Speaking at the third edition of Mana Nagaram programme, a public interaction session which was held in Hyderabad on Friday, KTR sought people’s participation in transforming Hyderabad into a global city. Pointing out that GHMC staff had recently removed blankets and sleeping mats from a stormwater drain in Ameerpet recently, KTR appealed to the citizens to be responsible and sensitive towards civic issues. He called upon the citizens to use separate bins for solid and liquid waste. KTR also said that the government was planning to purchase 500 electric buses to address the pollution problem in the city. The traditional diesel buses would be phased out over a period of time. He said that the GHMC already had pressed such electric buses into service for its garbage collection.

Stop forwarding fake videos about kidnappers on WhatsApp, the police have appealed. These rumours have led mobs to kill several people.
Another person has been killed by a mob on the basis of a fake WhatsApp rumours. In Hyderabad’s old city area, a group of transgender women were attacked by a mob who believed that they were part of a dacoit gang out to kidnap children, based on WhatsApp forwards. One of the women was killed by the mob.   The incident took place in Chandrayangutta. According to the police, four transgender women had traveled to Hyderabad from Telangana's Mahabubnagar district, and were seeking alms during Ramzan. Close to midnight on Saturday, local residents stopped them and started questioning them. The mob then attacked them, and two of the women were badly injured. A video of the incident shows the police trying to ward off the angry mob even as two people lay motionless on the ground. According to reports, the injured were shifted to the Osmania General Hospital, where one of them succumbed to her injuries. Her body has been shifted to the mortuary for an autopsy. One other person was grievously injured. Tensions ran high in the middle of the night as locals pelted stones at the patrol vehicle which came to rescue the trans women, accusing them of 'saving kidnappers.' Some policemen were also injured in the melee. A video of the incident also shows South Zone DCP S Satyanarayana on the ground, seemingly yelling at the mob. Extra forces were deployed in the old city area to bring the situation under control. The attack comes after several fake videos of “kidnappers” began doing the rounds on WhatsApp groups in the city. Around 25 people were reportedly detained by the police following the incident. Speaking to reporters, DCP Satyanarayana said that all four persons would have died if the police had not stepped in on time. Hyd police makes appeal The entire state of Telangana and even neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is plagued with the menace of fake news and rumours of a ‘Pardhi gang’ on the prowl. Disturbing videos of a man’s throat being slit, claiming that the perpetrators are Pardhi gang, are being shared to ‘caution’ people. These hoax videos and rumours are leading to mob violence and are claiming lives of innocents. Taking to Twitter on Sunday morning, the Hyderabad police tweeted, “Dear all, please don’t believe and share news that gangs from other states have entered into Telugu states (robbers and kidnappers) on your social media accounts. It is all fake.” “Don’t share viral content, which makes the citizens unnecessarily panic. If you suspect someone, just dial 100 or share information with your local police via whatever means is available to you. Thank you,” it added. A case has been registered under sections 307 (Attempt to murder), 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from duty), 427 (Mischief causing damage), 147 (Rioting) read with 149 (Unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) with the Chandrayangutta police. Background This comes days after a man with mental health issues was thrashed by a mob in Pahadishareef of Hyderabad over rumours that he was member of a deadly interstate dacoit gang – Pardhi gang. However, with the timely intervention of the police, the victim was saved from the agitated mob. In a horrific video being shared on social media, the victim is stripped and repeatedly thrashed with sticks and PVC pipes by an angry mob, who question his intention and ask him to reveal his identity. Earlier this week, Telangana Director General of Police M Mahender Reddy directed the Superintendents of each district to hold workshops in every village on how to identify fake news, and also reassure people that there is no presence of any dacoit gang in the state.   Also read: Mentally ill man thrashed by Hyderabad mob on suspicion of being a dacoit Arrests, videos and clarifications: AP, Telangana cops up efforts to tackle fake news In this WhatsApp obsessed Telangana dist, cops teach locals how to tackle fake news

The actor-producer had won the Golden Nandi in 1980 for his film ‘Yuvataram Kadilindi’.
Veteran Telugu actor ‘Red star’ Madala Ranga Rao, known for his revolutionary films, passed away on Sunday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The actor-producer was 71. He was admitted in the hospital on May 19, after he suffered a heart attack. Madala Ranga Rao was born in Mynampadu of Prakasam district on May 25, 1948. He also served as a key member in Praja Natya Mandali and was associated with several people’s movements. Besides being an actor, he also directed and produced films under the banner Navataram.
