Locals in multiple villages have stalled campaigns, and have questioned TRS MLAs and candidates over the developmental work carried out.

Candidates belonging to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) have repeatedly been facing the ire of voters while campaigning for the upcoming elections. On Monday, Station Ghanpur TRS candidate T Rajaiah was stopped by a few villagers in Golla Krishnapally, who said that Rajaiah had no right to campaign in their village as he didn't carry out development work in their village. After clashes between TRS cadre and the villagers, police intervened and detained the villagers. The same played out on Sunday, when Manakondur MLA Rasamayi Balakishan entered Kandikatkoor village in Illakunta mandal of Rajanna Sircilla district, accompanied by his supporters. However, the campaign vehicle couldn’t proceed further as angry villagers, particularly women, blocked his way. The villagers accused Manakondur MLA Balakishan of not living up to his poll promise of declaring villages surrounding the Mid Manair dam as flood prone. They also questioned him on what development he did as an MLA, and brought his campaign to a halt. Irked by this, TRS supporters and Balakishan got into a nasty fight with the villagers, and both parties elbowed each other and exchanged slurs. During this, Balakishan showered abuses against the women, following which they filed a police complaint. This is the second time Balakishan faced the ire of voters while campaigning.    Several TRS leaders have lately been made aware of the problems faced by farmers and villagers during the tenure of the TRS government. On Saturday, in Anajipuram in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, the police and TRS workers clashed after the farmers stalled the campaign of TRS candidate Gadari Kishore. In Yadadri district's Anantharam village an ugly clash broke out b/w villagers & TRS workers- supporters of ex MLA Gadhari Kishore. The villagers reportedly questioned their elected representative about unfulfilled poll promises and got beaten in return. #TelanganaElections2018 pic.twitter.com/EajGT4ZTHK— Paul Oommen (@Paul_Oommen) November 5, 2018 The villagers alleged that Kishore did not issue Pattadar passbook — a land registration document — a document which helps farmers to avail benefits like the Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bima. Through Rythu Bandu, farmers get Rs 8,000 for two crops as an investment. Rythu Bima is an insurance scheme that provides the farmers with Rs 5 lakh insurance cover.   As the crowd didn’t allow Kishore to campaign, the police charged at the crowd and slapped them. Even TRS cadre joined in and thrashed the locals.   In another instance, Pedapalli MLA Dasari Manohar Reddy faced the same a week ago after villagers stalled the MLA’s campaign and raised slogans against him. They also demanded answers regarding the development of the village during his four-year tenure.   However, they are not the only ones to face the ire of voters during campaigning. Even Finance Minister Etela Rajender was met with protests when he went to campaign in Huzurabad, his constituency.

While three puppies died on the spot, the fourth one is being treated after receiving severe burns.

In a sickening incident of animal cruelty, three puppies were burnt to death by unknown persons in an open plot in Kapra in Hyderabad on Sunday. The incident came to light after a resident in the locality alerted the members of the People for Animals (PFA), an animal welfare organisation. The puppies are believed to have been burnt alive. While three died on the spot, the fourth puppy that received serious burns is battling for life at a nearby veterinary hospital. A heart-wrenching video of the mother dog wailing at the death of its three puppies has gone viral on WhatsApp. In the clip, the mother can be seen sobbing, looking at the charred bodies of the three pups. However, the animal's grief and the cruelty inflicted on its pups have not moved the police enough to file an FIR yet. In a complaint filed with the Kushaiguda police, the members of PFA say that they were informed of the incident by Laxminarayana, a resident of Ganesh Nagar in Kapra. “Our volunteers immediately rushed to the spot and found three out of the four puppies had died and the fourth one was immediately shifted to a nearby veterinary hospital for medication, where it is now being treated,” the complaint reads. “The police visited the spot and have taken cognisance of the issue. We don’t know who has done this gruesome murder and we have asked the police to verify the CCTV cameras in the area,” Dattatreya Joshi of PFA told the Times of India. PFA has requested the police to investigate the matter and take stringent action against the anti-social elements. “It is totally unacceptable, unconstitutional and illegal under Section 11 (1) A of  the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act 1960 and IPC 429,” the complaint states. Activist say that an FIR is yet to be filed by the police and that there is a similar pattern of negligence when it comes to atrocities targeting animals in the city. When TNM tried reaching the Kushaiguda police where the PFA has filed the complaint, the SI refused to acknowledge the matter and passed on the buck to the nearby police station at Neredmet. The cops have refused to clarify whether an FIR has been filed on the case yet. “This is not an isolated case. We have had similar cases in the past, too,” says Pennarru Teja, a city-based animal activist. “People are becoming crueler with animals day by day. We need more awareness campaigns to sensitise people and this kind of cruelty towards animals cannot tolerated,” he adds. Two years ago, 8 youngsters were detained by the Musheerabad police for burning three puppies alive at a graveyard in Hyderabad. “We did it for fun,” the boys had told the police who were investigating the case. Recently, 100 stray dogs were found poisoned and set ablaze in a township in Hyderabad in October. In August, five beheaded puppy carcasses were found in a sewage tunnel in the city.

CPI gives 2-day ultimatum to Cong on seat-sharing, later says no plan to walk out

On Monday, the CPI announced that they want 9 seats for the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections, or else they’ll walk out of Mahakutami. Minutes later, they changed their stance.

Restless over the Congress still deliberating on the seat-sharing formula, the Communist Party of India (CPI) issued an ultimatum of two days to the Congress on Monday. The CPI said that they would contest independently from 20 seats as per their Plan B, if the Congress doesn’t offer them nine seats in the next two days. However, minutes later, they changed their stance and claimed that they have no plans of walking out of the Mahakutami. The CPI is part of the Mahakutami (grand alliance) which comprises Congress, Telugu Desam Party, and Telangana Jana Samithi. Addressing the media at their party office in Hyderabad, state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy accused the Congress of delaying the seat sharing decision, and further threatened to would walk out of the alliance if they are not given seats from nine constituencies, including Kothagudem, Husnabad, Wyra, Devarakonda, Bellampally, Alair, Mancherial, Pinapaka, and Munugode. Venkat Reddy said that he hasn’t received any update regarding the seat-sharing from the Congress, so he convened the press meet to put on record that the CPI needs those nine seats. “The CPI was very patient. Since the beginning, we have been asking them (Congress) not to delay the seat-sharing decision. As there’s no information on this, we have announced our plan B. In the next two days, if the Congress doesn’t give nine seats, we will announce candidates for these nine constituencies and begin our campaign,” Reddy said. Expressing confidence in his party's strength, he said, “We have the strength to win from 40 seats.” He further stated that the CPI was the reason behind the alliance, and said that they took measures to strengthen the alliance. However, later speaking to NTV, Reddy clarified that they wouldn’t walk out of the alliance, but have announced the constituencies from which CPI would be contesting. “As a party, we have announced the constituencies from where we would be contesting. If the Congress doesn’t agree to it, we will discuss,” Reddy said. Venkat Reddy himself will be a candidate in the upcoming Assembly elections. He has expressed his desire to contest from Husnabad constituency. He had contested the 2004 elections and won from the then Indurthi constituency. Similarly, the TJS also has been demanding 10 winnable seats from the Congress. However, as the party was reluctant on this, the party president Kodandram visited New Delhi and met Congress president Rahul Gandhi last week. The TJS had earlier expressed disappointment that the Congress had offered them only nine seats, of which six were strongholds of the TRS and AIMIM, that they had no chance of winning.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday lashed out at the 'Mahakutami' or grand alliance being forged in Telangana ahead of the Assembly elections in the state, scheduled to be held on December 7.  Addressing a gathering at Sangareddy, Owaisi referred to the alliance which includes the Congress, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and Communist Party of India (CPI) and termed it as the 'East India Company of 2018'."Now will (Chandrababu) Naidu save Telangana's composite culture or will the Congress save it? This is not 'Mahakutami' (grand alliance); it is the East India Company of 2018. Will Naidu who is in Vijayawada or the Congress which is in Delhi, decide the fate of Telangana and its people? This is your state and you will decide its fate...For this, it is necessary to send this modern East India Company back to where they belong on December 7," Owaisi was quoted as saying. Owaisi also condemned the killing of 68-year-old Devunoor Satyanarayana, a Hindu priest in Warangal who died after he was assaulted by a local imam, Yakoob, allegedly over a feud to turn off speakers."In Telangana, no Yakoob should kill a Satyanarayana and no Satyanarayana should kill a Yakoob. I condemn this and demand strict action by the police. Telangana has a composite culture. We have been staying together for centuries and the call for prayers will come from temples and mosques," he said.   The AIMIM has already renominated its seven sitting MLAs to contest in Hyderabad’s old city area and is expected to release a second list soon. This may include contesting from areas like Amberpet, Jubilee Hills, Musheerabad, Rajendranagar, Secunderabad and Uppal besides areas like Maheshwaram and Nizamabad Urban in Telangana. The state’s caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has repeatedly also emphasized that the AIMIM is a friendly party. The elections are scheduled to be held on December 7 and the counting of votes will take place on December 11.

"As a last-ditch effort, they are resorting to cheap tricks. If you continue speaking like this, I will cut off your tongue," Harish Rao warned TDP leader Revuri Prakash Reddy.

Telangana caretaker Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao on Monday lashed out at former MLA and senior Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader Revuri Prakash Reddy, warning to 'cut off his tongue' if he continued to make 'cheap' statements.  Addressing reporters earlier this week, Prakash Reddy had claimed that Harish Rao wanted to join the Congress much earlier but due to the sudden death of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, it did not work out."Harish is desperate to prove his loyalty to his uncle and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao who is neglecting him and talking ill of Chandrababu Naidu to please him,” Prakash Reddy was quoted as saying. However, the comments did not go down too well with the senior Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader. Stating that the Mahakutami or grand opposition alliance in the state would lose, Harish Rao said, "As a last-ditch effort, they are resorting to cheap tricks. If you continue speaking like this, I will cut off your tongue, let me warn you." He also expressed that the TRS would sweep the polls in December."I would like to tell the people that in the coming election on December 7, the KCR government coming back to power with more than 100 seats is inevitable. The TDP is finished over here. It is an Andhra party," he added.    Just earlier this week, Harish Rao was in another controversy after Pratap Reddy, a likely candidate for the Congress, claimed that the TRS leader called him from an unknown number, and said, “If you defeat my uncle, their family will go behind and I will work together with you. If you need anything, I am ready to help you. This is the truth.”   Pratap Reddy also claimed that Harish was in regular touch with Congress President Rahul Gandhi and would join their party any time. Hitting back, Harish Rao said, “My birth and death will be in TRS only. I will stay in Gajwel and ensure that he (Pratap Reddy) loses his deposit and his political career is buried.”   Read: ‘KCR not to give up Gajwel seat in Telangana’: Harish Rao dispels rumours

The Telangana Election Commission on Monday said a total of Rs 56.48 crore had been seized in the state since the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). This included Rs 38.71 crore by the police and Rs 17.77 crore by the Income Tax Department. Officials also said that the police seized 14,119.77 litres of liquor worth Rs 50 lakh. while the Excise Department seized a staggering 1,81,146.24 litres of liquor worth of Rs 3.99 crore. Authorities said that in total, the 19,52,66.01 litres of liquor seized was worth Rs 4.49 crore.  Meanwhile, in a related development, the Election Commission allotted time slots on All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan to the 11 registered political parties in the state contesting the elections."Out of them, seven are national parties; Congress, BJP, NCP, All-India Trinamool Congress, BSP, CPI and CPM. The remaining are all state recognised parties; AIMIM, TRS, TDP and YSRCP. The period of broadcasts/telecasts will be between the last day of filing nominations and two days before the polling. The Prasar Bharati Corporation (PBC) will decide the actual date and time for the broadcasts and telecasts, subject to the technical constraints governing actual time of transmission available," the EC said in a press release. Each of the national parties and recognised state parties is allotted a base time of 45 minutes and additional time is allowed on the basis of poll performance in the constituencies that fell under Telangana, in the last Assembly elections in 2014."While a total of 990 minutes of time has been set aside on AIR and another 990 minutes on Doordarshan for the 11 parties, a maximum 245 minutes is given to TRS on AIR and 245 minutes on Doordarshan. The Congress and Telugu Desam are given 192 minutes and 130 minutes respectively each on AIR and Doordarshan. The parties will be required to submit the transcripts and recording in advance," the EC added. The EC also said that the tradition of making the time available on AIR and Doordarshan to political parties during elections was started in 1998. Telangana is scheduled to go to the polls on December 7 and the counting of votes will take place on December 11.

While local reports say that the murder is due to political rivalry, police say they believe there was a personal angle.

Tension prevailed in Sultanpur village in Telangana’s Vikarabad on Tuesday morning after Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader Phirangi Narayana was stoned to death. Narayana’s body was found by some of his supporters, who then reportedly clashed with supporters of the Congress party, blaming them for the attack. While local reports say that the murder is due to political rivalry, police say they believe there was a personal angle too.   T Anapurna, Vikarabad SP told TNM that they were investigating another angle as Narayana was supporting his aide Mallaya's interest in a woman who was engaged to another person. On Monday, the woman had given a compliant to the police saying Mallaya and Narayana were spreading rumors about her, thus affecting her reputation. A village panchayath was also held on the same day. "On Monday Krishna and the girl's relatives together locked Mallaya out of his house and we suspect they stoned Narayana to death early Tuesday morning. The relatives of Narayana thought, he was killed by Congress workers and attacked two brothers," the SP said. "Seven people have been named as having actively participated in the stoning. Another 12 persons were present during the incident, we are verifying their role. We are yet to ascertain if there is a political motive. There is no caste angle to this as they were all BCs,” said T Annapurna, Vikarabad SP.    Ever since two of Narayana’s supporters switched camps and defected to the Congress, there has been tension between the two groups. A clash between the two groups was reported on Sunday. The two Congress workers who were injured on Tuesday have been shifted to hospital.   A case has not been registered yet. Sensing a law and order situation in the area, security has been beefed up and the police are trying to control the situation.   The attack on the leader comes a month before Assembly elections are scheduled to take place in the state. Telangana goes to the polls on December 7 and the results are to be announced on December 11.

The Hyderabad metro is presently operational along the entire Phase 1 corridor, with 27 stations between Miyapur-LB Nagar, and part of Phase 3 with 13 stations from Nagole to Ameerpet is open to the public.
The Hyderabad metro stretch between Ameerpet and Hitec City will begin service by the end of December this year, said NVS Reddy, the managing director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) on Monday. There are 10 stations along this stretch, which are part of Phase 3 of the HMRL project.  “The metro work progress is pretty good and it is going according to schedule. We expect the work along Ameerpet to Hitec City line to be completed and service to begin before the end of December this year,” said Reddy.   Phase 3 of the Hyderabad metro is between Nagole-Raidurgam. Part of this stretch, from Nagole to Ameerpet, began operating in November 2017 after it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.   The metro stations along the stretch opening in December are Madhura Nagar, Yusufguda, Jubilee Hills road number 5, Jubilee Hills check-post, Peddamma temple, Madhapur, Durgam Cheruvu, Hitec City, Shilparamam and Raidurgam.   In the initial metro plans, the last station along the Phase 3 route was to be the Shilparamam station, but Raidurgam was added later. HMRL is drawing plans to extend this line to Shamshabad to provide metro service to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).  The Hyderabad metro is presently operational along the entire stretch of Phase 1 corridor between Miyapur-LB Nagar, with 27 stations and part of Phase 3 — 13 stations from Nagole to Ameerpet — open to the public.   Phase 2 of the project between Jubilee bus station to Falaknuma with 16 stations is expected to be completed by 2019.   Reddy made the announcement at a press conference on the Hyderabad Metro Rail project being judged the ‘Best Urban Mass Transit Project’ by the central government.   Reddy also announced that a heritage section with pedestrian pathways and skywalks will be built in a 5-km stretch between the State Legislative Assembly and Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station on the Musi river banks. This developmental initiative is a part of the central government proposal to develop all future metros as urban rejuvenation projects. The Centre will take on 5 to10% of the project cost that will be set apart for the development of related infrastructure, he added.

Pentamma said she was scared to sleep on the streets at night because of the huge amount of money she kept with her.
It was on Friday that the Greater Hyderabad Municipal authorities picked 70-year-old Bijli Pentamma from the streets of Moosarambagh in Hyderabad where she was found begging for alms. In a mission that aims to create a beggar-free city, the GHMC is picking up beggars and taking them to Anand Ashram, a rehabilitation centre for beggars in the premises of Cherlapally jail. While Pentamma settled comfortably in the ashram, which is run by the Cherlapally jail, a routine check by authorities took them by surprise. They found an amount of Rs 2,34,320 in Pentamma’s bag and also silver bangles and a chain she was wearing. Though it was first thought that the amount was collected through begging, Pentamma later revealed that she belonged to a well-to-do household, and also owned land and other assets. Speaking to TNM, jail superintendent of Cherlapally jail MR Bhaskar, said that in 2011 Pentamma sold a plot of land that belonged to her for Rs 2 lakh and gave half of the amount to her elder son, who lives in the city. “Pentamma kept the remaining amount to herself. She later left home and took to the streets and began begging. She also had a younger son who died a few years ago,” the officer said. Bhaskar also said that they contacted her younger daughter-in-law who said she would come to the ashram and take the elderly woman home. “We tried contacting the elder son, but it seems he is not keen on taking care of his old mother.” The authorities suspect that Penatamma began begging after her sons disowned her, and begging was an easy way to earn some money. “She had around Rs 1 lakh when she left home and added another Rs 1,34,320 to her kitty by seeking alms in the past seven years,” Bhaskar said. The jail authorities took Pentamma to the nearby State Bank of India (SBI) and opened a savings account and deposited the money in her name. “We are not quite sure if the daughter-in-law would turn up to pick up the old lady,” the officer said, adding, “but Pentamma keeps saying she is afraid to sleep at night [on the streets] because of the huge amount of money that she kept to herself all these years.” When the mission kicked off in November last year, the jail authorities had come across a woman, an accountant in London, who returned to India and took to begging to overturn her ill luck. She was later allowed to go with her son, an architect who lived in India, after he submitted an affidavit with the police.

Name-calling, personal attacks and more: In Telangana, political campaigns hit new low

Telangana Elections
Although personal attacks are prohibited by the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct, it has not deterred the political leaders.
Personal attacks and name-calling have become commonplace in poll-bound Telangana, with political discourse degrading with each passing day. On Monday, Irrigation Minister and nephew of TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao T Harish Rao, during a speech, said that he would cut off the tongue of Revuri Ramesh from the Telugu Desam Party. “As a last-ditch effort, they are resorting to cheap tricks. If you continue speaking like this, I will cut off your tongue, let me warn you,” Harish Rao said. However, courting controversy by way of making remarks is not new for the TRS. In May, Finance Minister Etela Rajender was criticised for making the exact same remark when the Opposition criticized the Rythu Bandhu scheme introduced by the TRS. It may be safe to say that the bitter election campaign was started by K Chandrasekhar Rao. During his second public meeting after the dissolution of the Telangana Assembly, held on October 3 in Nizamabad, KCR launched into a tirade against the leaders of the Mahakutami, particularly Andhra CM and Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu. KCR literally spat on the ‘unholy’ alliance of the TDP and Congress, and went on to call Naidu various names such as ‘Telangana Drohi’ (Telangana betrayer) and ‘Dhurmaargudu’ (evil). He further went on to attack senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, and called him a ‘Ghulam’ (slave of the Gandhi family). However, Congress star campaigner Revanth Reddy gives the TRS stiff competition when it comes to controversial remarks and personal attacks. The situation hit a new low when TRS’ Chennur candidate Balka Suman and Revanth Reddy were embroiled in a nasty war of words. Balka Suman showered abuses on Revanth Reddy and called him a ‘dwarf’, and in response, Reddy said that Suman is someone who chews on the leftover bones of KCR — an insult for which Suman can file a case against Reddy under the Prevention of SC and ST Atrocities Act, as he belongs to the SC community. All of these remarks are a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The MCC guidelines as per the Election Commission of India says, “Criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. Parties and candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties. Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided.” The MCC came into force in Telangana on September 27. “Personal attacks are prohibited under the MCC, only criticism related to public activity is allowed. If anyone violates it, based on a complaint, the Returning Officer can file a case and take suitable action,” Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar said. However, political commentator T Lakshminarayana feels that the EC should take proactive steps to ensure that such personal attacks are avoided during campaigns. “Politicians will abide by the law only if the Election Commission of India takes prompt action against them. Only the EC can correct the discourse by taking a suo moto complaint based on newspaper articles and videos,” he said.

In 2014, an outlet of Karachi bakery in Banjara Hills was sealed for allegedly violating food hygiene norms and not maintaining the standards.
Hyderabad’s iconic Karachi bakery at Ameerpet has come under the scanner of the civic body officials following a complaint from a customer. The premises of the bakery was raided on Tuesday after a customer complained of finding worms in sweets purchased from the bakery. The customer took to Twitter to post pictures of the spoilt sweets. As the tweet went viral, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) West Zone Commissioner Hari Chandana took cognisance of the matter and ordered its authorities to raid the premises. Talking to TNM, Deepak Pinto, who found the contaminated batch of sweets, told TNM that the confectionaries were a gift from friends. “The sweets were well within the expiry date. My wife first noticed a white powdered substance on the sweets. We couldn’t really decide if the sweets were contaminated or not. In the second piece she took, there were worms wriggling out of it. We found worms in two more sweets and the remaining had a white powdered substance on top of it,” Deepak said. Deepak’s friend Donita took to Twitter and posted the pictures of the contaminated sweets. Happy wormy Diwali from @KarachiBakery Found these worms in at least 4 chocolate pieces. They even move... Not sure how many batches are even impacted by this @GHMCOnline pic.twitter.com/nwK7So1Z8y — Donita Jose (@DonitaJose) November 6, 2018 GHMC Commissioner Hari Chandana immediately responded to the tweet and ordered the food safety officials of the civic body to raid the premises of the bakery. Replying to the tweet, she wrote: #GHMC food inspectors are on the premises lifting samples. Penalties will be imposed based on noticed violation. pic.twitter.com/KcaZLTvQ0a — Zonal Commr WZ GHMC (@zcwz_ghmc) November 6, 2018 Hari Chandana also confirmed to TNM that the contaminated consignment has been confiscated and a fine of Rs 25,000 has been levied on the bakery owners for violating safety norms. Karachi is one of the iconic eateries in Hyderabad and boasts of a history of 65 years. It is for the first time in the recent history that the bakery has been raided. In 2014, an outlet of the bakery at Banjara Hills was sealed for allegedly violating food hygiene norms and not maintaining the standards stipulated by the municipal body. Just over two months ago, Swedish giant IKEA in Hyderabad was raided after a customer complained of finding a caterpillar in the biryani served at its restaurant. IKEA was levied a fine of Rs 11,500. The restaurant manager and Haldirams, the vegetable biryani vendor at Nagpur, from where the restaurant procures its food, were each issued a notice.

"We have legal recourse to take. We will not keep quiet," Shafat Ali Khan, whose son Asghar Ali Khan killed the tigress, told reporters in Hyderabad.

Under attack from animal rights activists for killing man-eating tigress Avni in Maharashtra, Hyderabadi sharpshooter Nawab Shafat Ali Khan on Tuesday said his team had acted on the orders of the Maharashtra government. Shafat Ali Khan, whose son Asghar Ali Khan killed the tigress, defended their action saying the bullet was fired in self-defence. Avni, identified as T1 and held responsible for killing at least 13 humans, was shot dead in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district on Saturday. Shafat lashed out at the activists, including Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, for making personal and baseless allegations against them. He threatened to sue those indulging in mudslinging. "We have legal recourse to take. We will not keep quiet," he told reporters in Hyderabad. He said he was not scared of such allegations, and would continue to stand by those whose lives were threatened by elephants and tigers venturing out of forests."Whenever governments or poor Indians call me, I will go to help them. The Constitution of India has given the Right to Life to all citizens. If a tiger or an elephant comes out of a jungle and kills people, I will stand by those people," he said."Why those making allegations now did not have the guts to go there. Why no police officer or military general was called. Was there nobody else in the whole country," he asked. Shafat said he had been called by the Jharkhand government to kill an elephant that was held responsible for the death of 15 people. Last year, he was called by the Maharashtra government to kill a leopard that had mauled seven children to death. He recalled that he was called to kill a tigress in Pilibhit, the Lok Sabha constituency of Maneka Gandhi, in 2009. "For four months, teams that had come from all over India tried but nothing happened. Finally, I was called and after an operation that lasted 35 days and nights, I killed her. Nobody opened their mouths then.""Now after spending 40 days in the (Yavatmal) jungle and facing all difficulties, we completed this operation and they are making all sorts of allegations," he said. On Maneka Gandhi's allegation that Asghar Ali had appeared on the scene illegally to murder the tigress, Shafat said that his son was part of a five-member team authorised by the Chief Conservator of Forest(CCF), Yavatmal. Asghar said that their intention was not to kill the animal and that's why they patrolled for 24 hours, taking risks on several occasions."We tried to move closer to the tigress. It used to be in thick bushes and we were not getting a clear view, which was required for tranquilising it," he said.

A 25-year-old woman in Hyderabad allegedly attempted to kill herself by jumping from the Victoria Memorial Metro Station in the city on Tuesday. The woman, who jumped from the concourse level, suffered injuries in the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital by locals.  The police said that according to a preliminary investigation, the woman, who is married and has a child, resorted to the move due to depression over family issues. Officials also said that she was a software engineer and lived under the limits of the LB Nagar police station. After her fall, the woman was rushed to a private hospital, after which, she was shifted to the Osmania General Hospital (OGH) for treatment. Doctors said that she was out of danger and that her condition was stable. The police said that they were investigating the incident and a case was yet to be registered. Further details would be revealed soon. The Victoria Memorial Metro Station in Saroornagar is part of the recently-inaugurated phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail from LB Nagar to Ameerpet. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders in Telangana on Tuesday approached the state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajat Kumar and filed a complaint against caretaker Ministers K T Rama Rao and T Harish Rao from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). The TDP leaders alleged that the two senior leaders were indulging in mudslinging and making personal remarks against their party chief and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. In their complaint, TDP leaders Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy, G Buchhi Lingam and N Durga Prasad, also named TRS candidates like Gangula Kamlakar, Rajender Reddy and M Bhupal Reddy, accusing them of the same.  In their meeting with Rajat Kumar, the TDP leaders demanded that strict action must be taken against the TRS leaders and accused them of promoting enmity among the people. They also cited several examples including ones made by the TRS leaders to 'paint' the TDP as an Andhra party and Naidu as an Andhra leader, repeatedly asking people if they want to be 'governed from Amaravati'. This promoted enmity between the two Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, they argued.  Telangana caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao himself, has indulged in such rhetoric while speaking at a public meeting last month, when he said, “Do you want to be a slave of Vijayawada and Amaravati or Delhi? Shouldn't decisions for Telangana be made in the state itself?" Things have been heated in the state ever since KCR and his cabinet decided to dissolve the Legislative Assembly on September 6, a decision, which was ratified by Governor E S L Narasimhan on the same day. Telangana will witness single-phase polling on December 7 to elect a 119-member Assembly. Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat said the counting of votes will be held on December 11.  With the announcement, the model code of conduct came into force in the state with immediate effect.

Why Swami Paripoornananda cannot be Yogi Adityanath for BJP in Telangana

Paripoornananda may not be able to trigger a 'Yogi style' campaign in Telangana as damaging the TRS, would benefit its arch-rival, the Congress.

Politics in Telangana is heating up, ever since the BJP welcomed into its fold Swami Paripoornananda, with many comparing his entry to that of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The state which has a Muslim population of over 12% with a strong presence of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is considered an ideal political laboratory by the BJP for its Hindutva political narrative. The articulate Swami Paripoornananda was given the task to take this narrative to the people. BJP President Amit Shah has repeatedly expressed unhappiness over the functioning of the party leadership in the state, which is known for its groupism and intense internal bickering. The paradropping of Paripoornananda by the central BJP leadership is an attempt to fill this gap. However, the state, known for a secular political culture, may not be so malleable for such kind of politics. The backdrop of the all-inclusive movement for Telangana’s separate statehood further makes it difficult to run a strong divisive political campaign as Yogi Adityanath could do in Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, given the apparent political line of the BJP to strike but not wound caretaker Chief Minister and TRS leader K Chandrasekhar Rao, Paripoornananda may not be able to trigger a Yogi-style campaign in Telangana. Addressing a gathering recently, Paripoornananda appealed to the people to vote for the BJP for the welfare of Hindus. “While the Congress party is promising to bring Jesus rule in the state, the TRS party is praising the rule of Nizams,” he said, adding that the two parties were causing inconvenience to Hindus in the state. This, however, is not the voice of any other leader of the BJP in the state. Thus, the hardcore Hindutva campaign is taken care by the swami while the BJP leadership in general runs a more or less secular campaign with limited communal appeals. On the contrary, Yogi Adityanath was the face of the communal campaign run by the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. Why this difference in the strategy of BJP in Telangana and Uttar Pradesh? Why has Paripoornananda been given the task of running a virulent politico-religious campaign while the other leaders are running a normal campaign? Many in politics expected that the swami's induction represented the hardcore Hindutva face of BJP’s politics in Telangana. But this seems to not be happening, except for the occasional outburst. The BJP had earlier campaigned for the observation of September 17, the day Hyderabad state got integrated into the Indian Union as ‘Liberation Day’ (from the rule of the Nizam). The party was critical of KCR for not officially observing this. Even Amit Shah called for the ‘liberation’ of Telangana from the AIMIM rule. Notwithstanding such politico religious overtones, the overall tone and tenor of the BJP campaign in the state is not on virulently communal lines as witnessed under Yogi led Uttar Pradesh. Thus, the Swami Paripoornananda mission to emulate Yogi Adityanath seems to be held hostage to the BJP's own political strategies. Why a TRS loss is not BJP’s gain The BJP is not willing to antagonise the non-Congress regional party. Its central leadership strongly believes that any loss for TRS would be gain for the Congress, its principal rival in the country. The revival of Congress in the Telugu states could mean the revival of the party in the country as the strong performance of Congress in united Andhra Pradesh in 2004 was a crucial factor in the UPA coming to power at the Centre. Thus, the BJP does not wish to cause any anxiety for KCR despite his open alliance with AIMIM. Therefore, in all likelihood, the state BJP is expected to make limited use of Paripoornananda. His campaign objective is expected to be confined to polarising Hindu votes in the BJP strongholds to enable the saffron party to win as many as seats as possible without harming the TRS. However, the BJP is sure that the campaign would sow the seeds for their brand of politics in Telangana in the future. The BJP has adopted different strategies in different states with Hindutva at its core. The party also expects the impact of the Sabarimala temple judgement to work in its favour, as the two Telugu states have a sizable number of Ayyappa devotees. But the BJP's plans are scuttled by the TRS and TDP governments in Telangana and Andhra observing a conspicuous silence on the ongoing controversy over the apex court verdict on Sabarimala. Unlike in Kerala where the Left government is in power, the party may not find the Sabarimala issue to be a polarising instrument despite the presence of Paripoornananda to carry the campaign. At least in Andhra Pradesh, it could afford to antagonise the TDP, the strong anti-Congress regional force till recently simply because the party had a choice in the form of YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who is challenging Chandrababu Naidu. In Telangana, the fight is mainly between TRS and Congress making the state BJP a victim of national political compulsions. In fact, the BJP had many opportunities to run a polarised campaign in Telangana under KCR’s rule.  The promise of 12% reservations for Muslims by the KCR regime was one such perfect opportunity. But the party has simply squandered away this opportunity by failing to conduct any largescale campaign against KCR's controversial quota policy. Similarly, the party has not taken up the issue of KCR government's inaction on Akbaruddin Owaisi, the AIMIM leader, and his objectionable remarks on Hindu gods. Many often interpret this shortcoming in BJP's politics of polarisation as the inability of the state party leadership, which is rocked by internal dissensions. Given the kind of political manoeuvring that the BJP in Telangana has to do, Swami Paripoornananda playing the role of Yogi Adityanath is a difficult proposition, at least for now. The BJP's electoral plank in Uttar Pradesh was unlimited communalism. Yogi Adityanath was perfectly suited for this job. But, the BJP in Telangana wants to confine itself to limited communalism due to its obligation for KCR, who can be an ally post-2019. Thus, Swami Paripoornananda's role also seems to be limited.

Academician-activist Sujatha Surepally joins BSP, to fight TRS candidate Balka Suman

Telangana Elections
According to Sujatha, the decision to join politics was to fight for equal representation of women and Dalits.
While continuing to teach Sociology at the Satavahana University in Karimnagar, Sujatha Surepally, a well-known Dalit academician and activist, has now taken on the role of a politician. Sujatha recently joined the Bahujan Samaj Party and will be fighting against TRS candidate Balka Suman, from the Chennur constituency – an SC reserved constituency. Before taking a plunge into politics, as an activist Sujatha has been a part of several movements, including the Telangana statehood movement. She was a founder member of the Telangana Joint Action Committee – a forum comprising organisations fighting for separate statehood which was key in realising the state. While she was considering joining the Congress or the Telangana Jana Samithi party, she backed out, as both the parties were dominated by Reddys without a significant presence of the oppressed castes, according to her. Both Congress and TJS are headed by Reddys – Uttam Kumar Reddy and Kodandaram Reddy. Speaking about her political entry and fight against Suman, she says, “We both are like teacher and student. I still call him ‘brother’. But I am going to defeat him,” adding, “He may have money and muscle power, but the people are with me.” According to Sujatha, the decision to contest from Chennur was taken because the region continues to remain backward even after bifurcation, with scores of Dalits living in poor conditions. Sujatha, who belongs to the Baindla community, a sub-caste in Madiga community, laments that Telangana didn’t become what she had imagined. “Telangana was achieved after several social struggles, I believed that the state would be caste conscious, but that didn’t happen. Women and Dalits are just used as token representatives under the TRS rule,” she says. Sujatha says that besides police harassment, the decision to join politics was because she realises that caste struggles need political backing. She has three cases against her for her activism. The academician-activist admits that she earlier believed elections were a futile exercise, but now believes that only through elections and democracy, women’s rights are possible. “I have decided to join politics also to inspire women. There is so much patriarchy across all the political parties. Unless, you have a political lineage like Renuka Chowdary, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, there is no way for women to join politics. For Dalit women who want to represent the community, coming into politics is a pipe dream. A few politicians are there, but they either don’t identify themselves as Dalits, and others are still led by men.” Sujatha also slams all the parties for their view of empowering women. “The manifestos of all the political parties are almost the same. They offer some beneficiary schemes like loans with small interest etc. but nobody wants to promise a policy so that they can empower themselves.”

Controversy
"Nothing illegal has happened. In fact, we want an inquiry so that the truth comes out," Khan said.
Sharpshooter Shafat Ali Khan is ready to face any probe into the shooting of a man-eater tigress in Maharashtra as he says the inquiry will bring out the facts. "We are 100 percent ready for any inquiry at any level. Nothing illegal has happened. In fact, we want an inquiry so that the truth comes out," Khan told IANS in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday announced a probe to ascertain if there were any lapses in the killing of Avni last week. Avni, identified as T1 and held responsible for killing at least 13 humans, was shot dead in a village in Yavatmal district on November 2. Shafat Ali Khan, whose son Asghar Ali Khan shot dead the tigress, said those sitting in air-conditioned rooms 1,000 km away and making allegations against them did not know the facts. Shafat said they were still very much part of the operation to achieve its second goal - capturing two cubs of the tigress and shift them to a rescue centre."There is no threat to them. They are 11-month-old so they are not cubs. Technically we call them sub-adults. They are bigger than leopards and can capture their prey," he said. The marksman said he was seeking legal opinion to take action against those making personal and baseless allegations against them. "We will not leave them. We will make sure that they are unseated from positions of power," he said, without naming Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, who alleged that he had links with anti-nationals and was a suspected murderer."No court of law has convicted me. I challenge them to prove their allegations. They are power drunk," said the 60-year-old Khan. Shafat, assigned the job of capturing or killing the tigress, had gone to Patna to attend a Bihar State Wildlife Board meeting when Asghar along with the team reached Ralegaon on receiving information about sighting of the man-eater on the evening of November 2. Asghar told IANS that the tigress came before them when they were on the road. She was about 20 meters away from their open-top gypsy. "After two forest guards identified the animal as T1, a forester fired the dart. But in a fraction of second she charged towards us with a roar. If I had not opened fire, it would have killed 2-3 people," said Asghar recalling that the big cat was just 6-8 meter away. Defending his action, the young hunter said T1 was not behaving like a normal tiger and for her human beings were just like cats and dogs.  He explained that this change in her psychology was due to her venturing out of the natural habitat, because of which was not getting her base prey."I was not at all happy. The operation had gone out of control and ended in big disappointment," said Asghar, who claimed that during first encounter with the tigress on September 14 they had escaped narrowly.  He did not shoot her as she had stopped at a distance after charging toward them. Stating that they had exhausted all options of capturing the tigress alive, he said the killing of 13 people by the man-eater during last two-and-half years had created a terror in 26 villages."We had to avoid a situation where people would have turned against the tiger because if this happens no matter what policy or conservation plan you make, it will be threat to all tigers," he said.

"We are committed to ensuring a free and fair election process. We will not allow any individual or political party to influence the election by use of cash,” the police said.
In a major bust, the Hyderabad city police on Wednesday uncovered a massive ‘hawala’ racket, which involved the illegal transfer of money at different locations for the purpose of bribing voters ahead of the Telangana elections, which are scheduled to be held on December 7. The police said that they seized a net cash of Rs 7,51,10,300 at Rotary Circle near NTR Marg, under the jurisdiction of the Saifabad police. The money was seized after a joint operation with the City Task Force, Flying Squads and Static Surveillance Teams, based on a tip off to the Commissioner of Police. Four people were arrested in the bust. The accused were identified as 23-year-old Ashish Kumar, a businessman, Mohd Azam (31), Sunil Kumar Ahuja (50) and 46-year-old Bahbut Singh Raj Purohit. The police said that all four of them were businessmen. The police said that they seized two laptops, one counting machine, 30 cheque books belonging to various banks, several cell phones and even one .32 NP bore revolver, besides the net cash. “The above mentioned hawala operators were working and planning to distribute several crore rupees in Telangana. This money is coming from other States and abroad through hawala channels illegally for use in the forthcoming Legislative Assembly Elections - 2018 in Telangana. Sometimes the amounts have been transferred online into the accounts of shell companies of hawala operators,” the police said in a press note. To facilitate this, authorities said that the accused falsified documents and gave false declarations to open such bank accounts, thereby cheating the banks and the government. They also said that some accused involved in this process were still absconding. “This money would have been used for bribing the voters involved in the election process. The seizure details are being intimated to the Enforcement Directorate and the Income Tax Department so that they can examine the trail of financial transactions and involvement of shell companies,” the press note added. The police said that Sunil Kumar Ahuja was the kingpin of the racket while Ashish Kumar, who recently returned from the US in May this year, would look after the accounts.   The duo used to open bank accounts on the name of Mohd. Azam by furnishing fake documents and false declarations for which Azam collected his commission to make easy money, the police said. “Because of the sensitivity and gravity of the case, it was decided to transfer the case to the Central Crime Station and entrust the investigation to a senior officer of the rank of ACP under the direct supervision of a DCP-rank officer. The Hyderabad City police is committed to ensuring a free and fair election process. We will not allow any individual or political party to influence the election by use of cash,” the police said. “All such Hawala operators and those running shell companies are strictly warned that similar action will be taken against them for any such illegal practices by them. In the next few weeks, the checking of vehicles and lodges will be intensified further,” the authorities added. The case has been registered under Sections 171b (Bribery), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 420 (Cheating) read with 120–B (Party to a criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Firecrackers left at least 50 people injured during Diwali celebrations in Hyderabad and outskirts, officials said on Thursday. The injured were brought to the government-run Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital late on Wednesday night and in the early hours of Thursday. According to doctors, at least eight of them have sustained critical injuries in their eyes. The others had minor injuries and they were sent home after treatment. The injured include people belonging to all age groups. A doctor said they included those bursting the crackers as well as some passersby. A 65-year-old woman travelling in an auto-rickshaw sustained critical injury when a 'rocket' hit her. In a notification earlier this week, the Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar said that in accordance with the recent directions issued by the Supreme Court of India, “there shall be a complete ban on bursting sound emitting firecrackers on public roads and at public places is strictly prohibited during the celebration of Deepavali Festival.” The police also stated that there would be a ban on noise-emitting firecrackers, adding that the noise level from crackers, drums and other instruments should not exceed the permissible limits as notified by the Pollution Control Board. “These orders shall be in force from 6 am from November 6 to 6 am on November 9. The public is hereby informed that any person violating the above orders shall be liable for prosecution under the Hyderabad City Police Act,” the notification added. Ahead of the festival, the Supreme Court had banned the sale of traditional crackers and allowed only "green crackers" in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR), but there was no clarity as to how many people could procure these, or the ones not containing the polluting barium salts. The Supreme Court had also given a two-hour window – from 8 pm to 10 pm – for people to burst the green crackers. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, a fire caused by firecrackers gutted four houses. The incident occurred in Vizianagaram district. There was no loss of life.   With IANS inputs

TDP prevented formation of Telangana, no right to contest in state: TRS' Harish Rao

Telangana 2018
Irrigation Minister Harish Rao, the nephew of TRS chief KCR, alleged that TDP prevented the formation of Telangana, and expressed no remorse for their betrayal.
After Telugu Desam Party (TDP) stepped up its attack on Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, he retaliated stating that the Chandrababu Naidu-led party had no right to contest in the Telangana elections. Terming TDP as ‘Telangana betrayers’, Harish Rao shot an open letter to TDP president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday, listing out 19-points on why his party had no moral right to contest in Telangana.   Nephew of the state’s caretaker CM K Chandrasekhar Rao, Harish Rao claimed that the people of Telangana are against the TDP because they were anti-Telangana. “You are a pakka Telangana betrayer, who dislikes the term ‘Telangana’ and didn’t tolerate the Telangana movement.  When BJP was in Centre using your influence, you stopped the formation of Telangana,” said Telangana Rashtra Samithi’s Harish Rao. In his letter, Harish Rao alleged that Chandrababu Naidu and TDP had hindered the development of the state and also claimed that Naidu went back on his promises, such as adopting the Palamuru village. “Why do you want to fight in Telangana elections when you conspired against the formation of Telangana?” Rao wrote. Though the Mahakutami — grand alliance of Congress-TDP-TJS-CPI — has not announced the candidates or the seat-sharing, Rao speculated that the TDP will contest from four constituencies. He alleged that the reason why Chandrababu wants TDP to contest from four constituencies and win is to sacrifice Telangana and save the interest of Andhra Pradesh.   The Irrigation Minister also alleged that the TDP had prevented them from taking up works of several water projects. He said that despite so much betrayal of Telangana, the TDP expressed no remorse or accepted their mistakes so far. Harish Rao, who is also the trusted aide of KCR, has taken the responsibility to campaign in the CM’s Gajwel constituency. However, the TDP and Congress leaders have been ensuring that the campaign is not an easy one. Congress leader Vanteru Pratap Reddy and TDP Politburo member Revuri Prakash have been alleging that Harish Rao has been conspiring to bring down the KCR, as the latter wants him to act as second fiddle to TRS party president KCR’s son, K Tarakarama Rao (KTR).   However, Harish Rao not only denied these allegations but further threatened to cut off Prakash’s tongue for making such statements.
