Telangana 2018
The EC said that 78 candidates from the TRS filed their nominations, followed by 64 candidates from the Congress and 47 candidates from the BJP.
A record 331 candidates filed their nominations on Wednesday for the upcoming Telangana Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled to be held on December 7. The Election Commission had said that it was receiving nominations from November 12 and 48 aspirants had filed their affidavits on the first day while the number of the second day was 39.  The EC said that the 331 candidates filed their nominations across the state over 113 constituencies with only 6 seats not witnessing any nominations; Nizamabad (Rural), Charminar, Chandrayangutta, Bahadurpura, Palakurthi and Khammam.  The EC in a press note also said that 78 candidates from the TRS had filed their nominations on Wednesday, followed by 64 leaders from the Congress and 47 candidates from the BJP. Nine members of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and seven candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), besides 5 members of the CPM, one candidate from CPI and AIMIM also entered the fray.  The remaining 119 candidates were either independents or contesting on behalf of political parties with lesser presence in the state.  Among those who filed their nomination on Wednesday, was Telangana caretaker Chief Minister and TRS President K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who will be contesting for the Gajwel constituency in Siddipet district. Before filing his nomination, Rao offered prayers at Lord Venkateshwara temple at Konaipally village, a practice he has been following for over three decades. KCR, as the TRS leader is popularly known, has not lost any elections since 1985. He tasted defeat only in 1983, which was his first election. Accompanied by caretaker Irrigation Minister and his nephew T. Harish Rao and other TRS leaders, KCR offered prayers at the temple and placed his nomination papers at the feet of the deity. The 64-year-old, a strong believer in astrology, numerology and vastu, has been elected to the Assembly seven times and to the Lok Sabha twice. KCR, who began his political career with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), quit the party in 2001 to float TRS to revive the movement for a separate Telangana state. He became the first Chief Minister of Telangana following TRS' victory in 2014 elections.

In a major announcement, the TRS has fielded former minister Danam Nagender, who had joined the TRS in June this year, from Khairatabad in Hyderabad.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Wednesday announced 10 more candidates for the upcoming polls in the state for the 119-member Legislative Assembly. With this, the TRS has announced 117 candidates and is yet to announce names for only two more seats – Musheerabad in Hyderabad and Kodad in Suryapet district. While the Musheerabad seat is held by Telangana BJP chief Dr K Laxman, Kodad is held by Padmavathi Reddy, the wife of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Uttam Kumar Reddy. In a major announcement, the TRS has fielded former minister Danam Nagender, who had joined the TRS in June this year, from Khairatabad in Hyderabad, to go up against TPCC Chief Spokesperson Sravan Dasoju. The TRS said that the candidates for the remaining two seats would be announced shortly after a meeting of senior candidates and caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. The last day for filing nominations is November 19. Others who were named include businessman-politician and present Malkajgiri MP Malla Reddy for Medchal, Prem Singh Rathod for Goshamahal, Mohammed Salauddin Lodhi for Charminar, Warangal Mayor Nannapaneni Narender has been fielded for Warangal East, Dr Methuku Anand for Vikarabad, Kaleru Venkatesh for Amberpet, Mynampally Hanumantha Rao for Malkajgiri, Konke Ravi Shankar for Choppadandi. The TRS also announced its candidate for Huzurnagar to go up against Uttam Kumar Reddy, Shanampudi Saidireddy, an NRI who has been working on the ground in the constituency. On September 6, KCR and his cabinet passed a resolution to dissolve the Assembly which came into effect after Governor ESL Narasimhan approved it. On the same day, the TRS released a list of 105 candidates, with most sitting MLAs retaining the candidacy for their seat. Only two MLAs were not given a ticket again – the Chennur seat in Mancherial district and Andole in Sangareddy district. In October, the party announced the names of two candidates for the Malakpet and Zaheerabad Assembly constituencies. While Chava Satish Kumar has been picked for Malakpet, K Manik Rao will contest from Zaheerabad on the TRS flag.   The state is set to go to the polls on December 7 and the counting of votes will take place on December 11.

Members from the People for Animals tried for days in order to rescue the bird. Even fire services were called in, but to no avail.
Just days after Hyderabad’s citizens came together to rescue a dog that was stuck between two buildings, a group of animal lovers again came together at Secunderabad’s Picket Park in Secunderabad, where a kite was found dangling by a manja atop a peepal tree. Members of the group scaled the tree and successfully freed the bird, which was hanging by the manja for five days. Sridhar, the park’s watchman, alerted the members of the People for Animals (PFA) about the animal in peril. Panneeru Teja, a familiar face among animal lovers in Hyderabad, and his brother Prudhvi rushed to the spot. “We tried our best to bring the bird down, but our efforts were in vain. The tree was 40-50 feet tall with no supporting branches. We thought about climbing the tree, but we knew it was dangerous, considering its height. We then decided to call the fire services department into the park,” Teja says. The bird made many attempts, but sadly, it could only flap its wings as its legs were tied entangled in the manja. Fire services came to the spot quickly, but they couldn’t get into the park beyond a spot. “The tree was in the middle of the park and the fire service couldn’t make their way inside. That’s when we decided to pull up our socks and get into action,” says Teja. A day passed, but they were still hopeful. Another member of the group, Karunasagar, brought in more people, and it became a community effort to save the kite, which hadn’t had food or water for five days. “Now, our final resort was to tie stones and sticks to a gunny rope and bring the bird down along with the manja. All of us took turns and threw the rope high. Every time we failed, we were only more determined to rescue the bird. Finally, after a zillion attempts, the rope stuck to the manja and we pulled the bird down,” Teja explains. After attempting to rescue the bird for two days, the bird was finally free, but was barely able to fly and was dehydrated and exhausted. In a video that has now gone viral, members of PFA can be seen cutting the manja tied to its legs. After that, they fed it water and chicken, and after some time, the bird happily flew away. “What made us the happiest were the tiny children who joined us in our efforts. They were really enthusiastic and it’s nice to see children being sensitive to their surroundings,” he says. “All's well that ends well,” he adds. In 2017, the National Green Tribunal banned manjas made of nylon, cotton manjas coated with powdered glass, or manjas made of any non-biodegradable synthetic material. Watch:

A sitting judge in Telangana was arrested on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days after the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) raided his residences and other properties a day earlier. He was sent to the Chanchalguda Central Prison in the city. Investigating officials said that they found close to Rs 3 crore in disproportionate assets from Vaidya Vara Prasad, the Fourteenth Additional District Judge of Ranga Reddy district. The ACB said that raids were conducted at multiple residences in Hyderabad, including one in Kondapur and three places in Telangana’s Sircilla district, besides two places in Maharashtra, where the judge had earlier served. The ACB had conducted the searches on the directions of the Hyderabad High Court, which had received a complaint against the judge and ordered a preliminary enquiry. A case had also been registered under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. This is not the first time that a sitting judge has been raided in Telangana. In April, a senior judge in Mahbubnagar, who was serving in a special court in the district dealing with the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, was suspended on charges of corruption following an inquiry by the High Court within a day of taking charge. In the same month, the ACB arrested the First Additional Junior Civil Judge, S Madhu, in Jagtial in Telangana on charges of corruption.  At the time, investigation officials said that Rs 4.20 lakh was seized from his residence in Jagtial town. In March, a sitting judge from a labour court in Hyderabad, Mallampati Gandhi, was suspended after ACB raids on his properties following the direction of the Hyderabad High Court, which received a complaint against the judge. The raids by the ACB found more than Rs 3.5 crore in disproportionate assets. He was later arrested by the police.

"I worked hard for the TRS, but they cheated me,” Shobha said while addressing a press conference.
Incumbent Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA Bodiga Shobha, who was earlier elected from Choppadandi constituency and now denied a ticket by the TRS, switched over to the BJP on Thursday in the presence of Telangana party chief Dr K Laxman. The constituency, reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, was one of the few seats where the TRS had not announced its candidate when the Legislative Assembly was dissolved on September 6. On Wednesday, the TRS announced that Konke Ravi Shankar would contest from Choppadandi. Shobha had expressed her displeasure earlier, when she threatened to contest as an independent if she was denied a ticket. She also said that she enjoyed the support of the people in her constituency. Speaking to reporters after joining the BJP, she said, “What wrong did we do? Who did we trouble? Injustice has occurred to a Dalit woman in the state today. None of the people complained about me, but some leaders within the TRS itself have sabotaged my chances.” "I worked hard for the TRS, but they cheated me. I have worked hard for the people and made a lot of sacrifices. I am sure that my constituents will send me back to the Assembly," she added. Shobha is the third leader to have quit the TRS and joined hands with the opposition, and the second person to have joined the BJP. Last month, actor-turned-politician P Babu Mohan joined the BJP in the presence of party's national president Amit Shah in New Delhi after he was denied a ticket by the TRS. In 2014, Babu Mohan was elected on a TRS ticket from Andole constituency in Medak district. This time, the TRS announced journalist Kranti Kiran as its candidate from this constituency, and now Mohan is all set to contest on a BJP ticket. Earlier, senior politician and former minister Konda Surekha joined the Congress along with her husband, MLC Konda Murali, in New Delhi after meeting with Rahul Gandhi. This comes days after the four-time MLA from Warangal East constituency was also denied a ticket, with the TRS deciding to field Warangal Mayor Nannapaneni Narender from the seat. Shobha was embroiled in a major row earlier this year, when she, her husband and their security personnel assaulted a toll plaza employee for not letting them pass through for free when they were traveling to Hyderabad from Karimnagar. The couple demanded free entry, but the employee purportedly asked them to wait for a few minutes. Infuriated with his attitude, the MLA got out of the car and started shouting at him. Her husband, Bodiga Gallanna, then slapped the employee.

TRS has one leader, want KCR to be CM forever: Kavitha Kalvakuntla to TNM

Telangana 2018
In an exclusive interview with TNM, Nizamabad MP Kavitha Kalvakuntla says TRS is confident of winning more than 100 seats in Telangana Assembly Elections.
The female face of the TRS, a party which has a sub-par gender balance in its senior leadership, Kavitha Kalvakuntla has a distinct identity. She is seen as the key Delhi representative of the party, being a Member of Parliament and although Kavitha is not contesting herself in the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections, she is one of the frontline campaigners in key districts. It helps that she is the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter, but she also has competition from within her family ranks in her brother KT Rama Rao and her cousin T Harish Rao. TNM caught up with the Lok Sabha MP from Nizamabad at her residence in Hyderabad, during a short break from the hectic election schedule. In a candid, exclusive chat with TNM, she explains why the TRS is so confident of a clean-sweep in the state, and responds to critical and controversial questions with alacrity, and in some cases, tactful side-stepping. Here are excerpts from the interview. Telangana CM KCR says that the TRS will win more than 100 seats in the upcoming polls, what gives him this confidence?   There has been no unrest in the state under our tenure, because we ensured that nobody sleeps hungry. After state formation, we were hit with two dry spells (drought), but our welfare schemes like pension and ration had ensured that there was no one was hungry. Earlier, there was a cap on rice—20 kg rice was given to a family, but we increased the social safety net by providing six kg rice for each person and enhancing the pension from Rs 200 to Rs 1000. We have fulfilled the needs of the people and hence we are confident. TRS promised 1 lakh government jobs in the run up to the previous elections. But with only 33,000 filled in the last 4 years, even if many more have been sanctioned and notified, is it not slow progress? We have already sanctioned 1.07 lakh, but there is a delay only because of due process followed by the State Commission. We are strengthening the government departments in a constructive way. We have decided not to rely on private contractors. Out of the 1.07 lakh jobs, the government has notified 84,000 jobs. Anybody in the world knows that the recruitment has to be through due process. You must have seen students saying that the service commission is not doing things as fast as it can. But you wouldn't have seen any student saying that there was some graft for which we didn't jobs in a fair way. You must note that there have been no complaints that jobs are being handed out as favours or in return for bribes. We have also added private jobs by inviting close to 9,000 companies. Already 3.5 to 5 lakh people have taken private jobs.  You promised free education from KG to PG ahead of the previous polls. Why has that not been achieved? When we came to power, we realised that the education system in the state is in shambles. We had to first rectify the basic problems. The administration of government schools is fragmented as a few schools fall under the village panchayat, some under the central government and many under the state government. We took one year to understand and integrate this. Now, we have started model schools from class 5 to 10. We have even plans to bring Anganwadi into the model schools. We have invested heavily on public schools. We are on the right track. Are farmers in the state happy with the TRS? Yes, absolutely. Then why is there such criticism on Rythu Bandhu? The poor tenant farmers, who actually need the help, are complaining that they are not receiving the benefits of the scheme, and it is the landowners who do, most of who are not even involved in tilling the land. Is it a policy problem or an implementation problem? There is no problem at all. We’ve been extremely correct. Can the government directly engage with the tenant? Now if you own a house, can the government tell the tenant that the government will give tax exemption etc. to him. Will you accept it? The scheme is for the small land owners and 98% of those who avail the scheme are small and marginal farmers with land less than 5 acres. The government’s decision is to support them, and the money is indeed reaching them. Then what about the poor tenant farmers? As a policy we took a decision that the government will not intervene in the private business. The government cannot keep identifying who is a tenant farmer. The money we give to the landowners will be passed on to the tenant farmers. Land is the private property of an individual, we can’t intervene in their private business. CM KCR has recently received flak for stating that there are no farmer suicides in the state. Opposition puts the number of suicides at 4000 and above. According to NCRB data, there were 1358 farmer suicides in 2015 and 632 in 2016. Are you trying to whitewash the issue? There is no such attempt. Like other state governments we don’t fudge the data. Prior to 2014, there has been more than 3,500 farmer suicides every year. There were 1,000 suicides as you said. You have to look at the positive side, it has gone down from 1,000 to 500. If you look at the subsequent year data, I’m sure it must have come to zero. But you do agree that there were farmer suicides in the state I can only say that you should look up to the latest data. You are giving me a figure which is two years back. In these two years, we were able to give water to more than 20 lakh acre across Telangana. Have the BJP and Congress created a challenge for the TRS online, in managing to create the perception that it won’t be as easy a win for the TRS as it claims? The TRS is on a silent campaign on WhatsApp. Both of them are national parties. They have a huge social media team, as they have openly claimed. If Uttam Kumar Reddy tweets something, there would be thousands of retweets and favourites from other states. The fact is no villager uses Twitter, people use Facebook and extensively WhatsApp. We have collected 80 lakh to 1 crore phone numbers, which includes close to one lakh village heads and prominent people with considerable influence to spread the welfare brought in by the TRS. We collected contact numbers of these prominent people across the state with their consent, and regularly share the development programmes and welfare schemes brought by the TRS. But this campaign is invisible. After dissolving the cabinet, KCR labelled the TDP as an ‘Andhra party’ and has repeatedly attacked Chandrababu Naidu and his alliance with the Congress. Does the TRS view TDP and Chandrababu Naidu as a threat?  We don’t see him as a threat. The people of Telangana have dismissed the TDP, the bye-elections are testimony to it. We just want the people to know about the unethical alliance of the Congress and TDP. Has the TRS been going soft on the BJP as a strategy? In this state, the BJP doesn’t exist. They have five seats now, they won’t even have one seat after this election. So why would we want to exhaust our time, energy and resources on a party which doesn’t even exist. A party which potentially could damage the TRS in two or three seats is the Congress. We want our people to focus on the Congress so that they won’t even win those seats. BJP doesn’t matter and doesn’t exist in Telangana. When it will come to the other elections, probably it will matter. There is an accusation that TRS is closing ranks with the Reddys. Is TRS becoming a party of the Reddys? We were actually accused the other way around. When we formed the party in 2011, we formed a policy that at least 51% of the members in all committees must be from SCs, STs and BCs. We are the only party in this region with such a policy. The accusation comes from the fact that among the 107 candidates announced as contestants, many of them were from the Reddy community. We will ensure that the final list is a fairly balanced list. There is a criticism that the TRS has turned into a dynasty party and the government is being run as a family enterprise, don’t you think it is valid criticism? The CM didn’t give a long rope to anyone including my brother, cousin or anyone. All of them were elected by public, they were no backdoor entries, through nominations. If the ministers were inefficient, they wouldn’t have been part of the cabinet. We have run the government very professionally, that’s the reason we achieved these results. When it comes to the party, all of us were part of the movement and were later elected by public. If you are not elected by the people, the public will give their verdict someday. Is KTR the next CM? TRS has only one leader. We aren’t inclined for an alternative. I want KCR sir to be the Chief Minister forever. Is there an infighting between KTR and Harish Rao? It is all media speculation. All their moves are under scrutiny. If they are together on a dais there's a speculation, if they are not there's a speculation. As an insider I can say that everything is cool between them. What are your personal ambitions in the party, what do you see in your political future? We come from a different background, where we don’t put the needs of the individual above the party. In our party, anybody has no set options or personal agenda. We just keep working, whatever role party gives and wherever we are thrown, we are happy to work. If they throw in Delhi or in the USA we will work in the interest of the state.

Earlier this month, the party released its second list of 28 candidates for the upcoming Telangana elections. The party released its first list of 38 nominees for the 119 assembly constituency on October 20. With the release of the second list, the total number of candidates who will actively begin campaigning shortly stands at 66. With the third list out, the number is now 86.         All sitting MLAs including Telangana BJP President Dr K Laxman from Musheerabad constituency, got  a ticket. BJP MLC N Ramachander Rao was given a ticket for the Malkajgiri Assembly constituency. Actor-politician Babu Mohan, who had recently jumped to the party after being denied a TRS ticket, was given a nomination from Andhole, a seat reserved for the SC community. The Hyderabad Traffic Police on Thursday issued a challan to the official vehicle of the Additional Commissioner of Traffic, Anil Kumar, and imposed a fine of Rs 235, for wrong parking in the city.  The incident was brought to light by a city-based journalist, Abhinay Deshpande, who took a picture of the violation and tagged the Hyderabad Traffic Police in his tweet. "Will you issue a "No Parking" e-challan to this vehicle? Place: Near Mahankali Traffic PS. Time: 3 pm on 15 November, 2018," he said. Responding to the tweet, and stating that all were equal before the law, the traffic police's Twitter handle, posted a screenshot of the challan, where it had fined the vehicle with the number plate TS 09 PA 3330.  @HYDTP will you issue a "No Parking" e-challan to this vehicle? Now, the question is who is going to pay for it? Vehicle was registered on government, so is it public money which has to be paid? I strongly demand action against the IPS officer too," one user tweeted in response.   The challan has since been paid and taken down from the website of the Hyderabad Traffic Police.  In September this year, the traffic police received much praise online after it took to social media and posted photos of challans issued to its own men in uniform, for breaking the rules.  Orders were also issued within the department from the Commissioner of Police that every police officer must wear a helmet when they travel on a bike. Memos were also issued to the violators, warning of disciplinary action.  Read: In Hyd, even traffic cops can't escape fines for violating rules: hundreds of officers caught

With this, the granddaughter of TDP founder and late Chief Minister NT Rama Rao has also entered the fray.
Suhasini with her father, Harikrishna.
In a major move, the Telangana unit of the Telugu Desam party (TDP) on Thursday announced Nandamuri Suhasini, the daughter of actor-politician Nandamuri Harikrishna, as its candidate for the Kukatpally constituency in Hyderabad, for the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections. Suhasini's name was announced after she met with TDP President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu earlier in the day, which upset senior leaders E Peddi Reddy and Mandadi Srinivasa Rao, who were aspiring to get the ticket. However, Naidu assured both leaders that he would give them appropriate positions of power later.  With this, the granddaughter of TDP founder and late Chief Minister NT Rama Rao has also entered the fray. This also means that the Nandamuri family, including Nandamuri Balakrishna, may come out to campaign for the candidate. Suhasini is also the half-sister of popular actor Jr NTR.   In 2014, it was Madhavaram Krishna Rao who had won the Kukatpally seat from the TDP, but has since defected to the TRS. The incumbent ruling party has renominated him and he is now expected to go up against Suhasini. On Wednesday, the Telangana unit of the TDP announced its candidates for two more Assembly constituencies, Sama Ranga Reddy for Ibrahimpatnam and Ganesh Gupta for Rajendranagar, taking the total count to eleven candidates out of the 14 seats it has been offered. Earlier, the TDP said that Nama Nageswara Rao will be contesting from Khammam, Revuri Prakash Reddy from Warangal West, Sandra Venkata Veeraiah from Sathupalli, Kothakota Dayakar Reddy from Makthal, Erra Shekhar from Mahabubnagar, T Veerender Goud from Uppal, Anand Prasad from Serilingampally, Mecha Nageswar Rao from Aswaraopeta and Muzzafar Ali Khan from Malakpet. Harikrishna, the fourth son of NTR and a former MP and ex-Andhra Pradesh Minister died in a road accident when an SUV he was driving overturned in Telangana's Nalgonda district. The actor-politician was popular as 'sarathi' or charioteer of his father's 'Chaitanya Ratham', the name of the vehicle on which NTR toured the state after floating the TDP in 1982.

Demanding the Secunderabad ticket, former Mayor of Hyderabad Banda Karthika Reddy and her husband Chandra Reddy sat in protest outside the residence of Congress president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday. The protest lasted for five hours. Speaking to media, the former mayor lamented that the party had declined to give her the seat, and claims that it is being offered to someone who is not from the Secunderabad constituency. The Congress party has not announced the candidate for the Secunderabad constituency yet. She said that she has been working in the interest of the party, but the party has not acknowledged her efforts. “In the 2014 Assembly elections, the Secunderabad seat was given to Jayasudha, however, we supported her. As a mayor I did a lot of work in the 24 constituencies of the GHMC. My husband has been working for the party for 30 years. If the party is declining a seat to a woman, what does it indicate?” she told reporters. In 2014, actor Jayasudha contested from the Secunderabad Assembly and later defected to the Telugu Desam Party.   The Congress has released two lists with 75 candidates so far. Prominent candidates among them are Uttam Kumar Reddy, who will be contesting from Huzurnagar, Revanth Reddy from Kodangal, Jeevan Reddy from Jagtial, Mukesh Goud from Goshamahal, DK Aruna from Gadwal and Sabitha Indra Reddy from Maheshwaram. With the candidates being denied tickets owing to the alliance, several party leaders have threatened a rebellion and decided to contest as independents. On Thursday, the Congress party suffered a jolt after former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy’s son, Karthik Reddy submitted his resignation after being denied a seat to contest. Karthik was hoping that the party would give him the Rajendra Nagar seat. However, the ticket went to Telugu Desam Party candidate Ganesh Gupta, as part of the alliance. The grand alliance includes Congress, TDP, TJS and CPI.   Similarly, Manne Krishank, Congress spokesperson and youth leader, has threatened to contest as independent after the Secunderabad Cantonment seat was offered to his father-in-law, Sarve Satyanarayana.

In his resignation letter, Abid Rasool Khan said that the 15-18% Muslim population has no importance for the Congress leadership.
Abid Rasool Khan/Facebook
The Telangana Congress suffered another blow on Wednesday, with senior leader and former state Minorities Commission Chairman Abid Rasool Khan resigning from the party. He was the Vice President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee. He will be joining the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the presence of the caretaker Deputy Chief Minister Mohammad Mahmood Ali, Minister KT Rama Rao, and MP Kavitha Kalvakunta. In his resignation letter to Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Rasool said that he was hurt and was resigning based on two reasons -- the appointment of Shaik Abdul Sohail as the Chairman of the Minorities Commission, who he called “a person with no social standing and a shady background”; and the fact that Congress appointed working presidents from the Reddy, SC, Kamma and BC communities, but none from the Muslim community. “15-18% of the Muslim Population has no Importance in front of the Party LEADERSHIP. Their votes are needed by the party does not wish to empower them (sic),” he wrote in his resignation letter. Furthermore, he alleged that the party is “controlled by Sanghi’s wearing Khaki within the Party”. Prior to his resignation, Rasool had said that the party, in all the districts that they have chances of winning, should give tickets to Muslims in one of the constituencies of that district. "Can they not do that much?” he had asked the party, according to PTI. "You don't want to give us nominated positions, don't want to give us political opportunities, you just want our votes. What is the difference between our party and the BJP?” he told the news agency. The Congress has released the names of 75 candidates so far, out of which only four have been allotted to the Muslim community. Out of these four, three of these are in Hyderabad’s Old City area. The Congress is part of the mahakutami, the grand alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS). The Congress party, which is heading the alliance, has already announced that it will contest 93 seats, leaving 14 seats to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), 8 seats to the TJS and 3 seats to the Communist Party of India (CPI). The TJS, however, announced it will be contesting in 12. Telangana goes to the polls on December 7 and results will be declared on December 11.

‘I am agitated’: Karthik Reddy speaks to TNM after resigning from Congress

Karthik Reddy said that he would not like to jeopardise his mother Sabitha Indra Reddy’s chances, but said that he made personal promises as well.
Former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy’s son, Patolla Karthik Reddy, who was with the Congress’ campaign committee, sent his resignation along with the resignation of all his supporters after the Rajendranagar seat he vied for was allotted to the Telugu Desam Party, as part of the Mahakutami. On Wednesday, the Telangana unit of the Telugu Desam Party announced its candidates for two more assembly constituencies -- Sama Ranga Reddy for Ibrahimpatnam and Ganesh Gupta for Rajendranagar, taking the total count to 11 candidates being announced out of the 14 seats it has been offered in the Mahakutami. Speaking to TNM, Karthik said, “This is a Congress winning seat, and so is Ibrahimpatnam. My matter of concern is, how do you give away a winning seat to your allies? Let’s [say] that even if you give to your allies they would win that seat, but that’s not true. The TDP will not win in Ibrahimpatnam and Rajendranagar. Neither do they have strong candidates and nor do they have a vote bank. On what basis did they give those seats? Am I not answerable to the workers who have been working for the party for so long,” he said. He added that he wasn’t worried that he was not picked as the candidate, and would have accepted it if the Congress had picked someone from the party. Angry because Karthik was being denied a ticket, his supporters vandalised the party office at Shamshabad. They tore party posters and raised slogans of ‘Karthik Anna Zindabad’. Karthik is the son of former Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, who is contesting on a Congress ticket from Maheshwaram. When asked about how his resignation will affect his mother, Karthik said, “You also should take Rajendranagar as a unit. It's a unit by itself. This is not Maheshwaram or Chevella. This is an issue related to Rajendranagar where I have been working, where I am answerable. I respect my mother’s chances, I would not jeopardise whatever it is with regard to her. But what about the personal promises I made on the ground?” he asked. Karthik has earlier claimed that Telangana Telugu Desam Party chief L Ramana sold the Rajendranagar seat. To this, he responded that incumbent MLA Prakash Goud has proclaimed that Karthik will not get a seat, and he was suspicious. “Prakash Goud has been saying it for the last two months in every speech that ‘Karthik will not get the ticket. He won’t get the seat. Karthik won’t contest, the seat is for us only.’ Why won’t I be suspicious? How does an opposition MLA have the guts or the gall to say that I won’t get the ticket, on what basis? This is for Prakash Goud and L Ramana to answer,” he said. When asked if he would contest as an independent, Karthik said that while the decision is yet to be taken, his cadre has begun preparations. The last day for filing nominations is November 19. “That decision will be taken, We’ll convene a meeting and decide on that day. As of now, the prep by cadre is being done for me to contest as an independent. They are more adamant than me, so let’s see on November 18,” he said.   When asked if he will return to the Congress if they reach out to him, Karthik said, “Right now, I am agitated. There are certain answers I need. As long as they don’t answer my questions, I’ll stick to my stand,” he said. Addressing a gathering of his supporters in Hyderabad after announcing his resignation on Thursday, Karthik said, “There is pain in all of us. I don’t have personal pain that I was denied a ticket, but I just worry that the TRS candidate will win. When TDP got the B-form yesterday, it was the TRS which celebrated. Telangana TDP President has approached senior Congress leaders and lobbied for the ticket for his own personal gain. Is this why we joined the Mahakutami?” he asked. Telangana goes to polls on December 7, and the counting will be on December 11.

Telangana polls: Jagan and Pawan seem willing to drop out than burn their fingers

Telangana 2018
Any major setback here will have serious negative consequences for both in the AP Assembly election set to be held a few months later.
The last day for nominations in the Telangana polls is fast approaching but there is no indication from the Jana Sena Party chief and actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan about fielding candidates from his party in any of the 119 Assembly segments in the December 7 election. It may be recalled that a few days ago Pawan had said that he would take a final call on fielding candidates soon, while the YSRCP has openly announced its unpreparedness to contest this election as it is preoccupied with preparations for the 2019 Assembly election in Andhra. Political observers are now drawing comparisons between the TDP, YSRCP and Jana Sena in the context of formulation and implementation of their respective election strategies. At this juncture, there seems little scope for Pawan to put up his party nominees in Telangana, considering the fact that nominations will end on November 19, just three days from now. Moreover, the battle lines are drawn now and even the time-consuming process of seat sharing in the ‘Mahakutami’ alliance has been completed now and the allies – Congress, TDP, TJS and CPI – are raring to take on Telangana CM K Chandrasekhara Rao unitedly. It is an undisputed fact that both YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy and Jana Sena leader Pawan enjoy popularity in every nook and corner of Telangana. While Jagan has the celebrity status of being the son of former chief minister, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy, Pawan is a celebrity himself with a widespread network of fans and a youth following in the poll-bound state. Even then, they could not prepare their parties to make their presence felt in the Telangana polls, a fact which is raising many an eyebrow over what exactly might have led to this situation. Both the young leaders are apparently unwilling to burn their fingers in the December polls, as any major setback in this poll will have serious negative consequences that will greatly mar their chances in the AP Assembly election, which is likely in April or May 2019. This means that there would be only a short gap of four to five months after the December 7 polls in Telangana. For Jagan, the 2019 AP Assembly election is considered by his own party men as a do-or-die battle considering that a consecutive defeat, after the 2014 upset, will threaten the very survival of his regional party, YSRCP, which is named after his father YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Jagan has faced the bitter experience of many of his MLAs and MPs defecting to the TDP in the past three years. The YSRCP won 66 seats in the 175-member AP Assembly in 2014 and 22 of them joined the TDP later. The party won eight MP seats in AP out of which three defected to the TDP eventually. In Telangana, YSRCP’s situation is even worse as all the three MLAs and one MP it won in 2014 later switched loyalties to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). In the case of Pawan Kalyan, his party’s organisational structure is yet to take a full-fledged shape in Andhra Pradesh itself. He is mostly relying on leaders like former assembly speaker Nadendla Manohar, who quit the Congress recently to join the Jana Sena Party in the hope of contesting the next elections in AP with Pawan’s blessings. The Jana Sena leader is also facing the difficult task of removing the caste tag being attached to his party by rivals in the face of a surge of support from his ‘Kapu’ caste in the two Godavari districts. Against this backdrop, Pawan is forced to assert several times that there will be no talk of caste in his party and everybody will get equal opportunities based on merit and standing. On the other hand, the TDP has got a head start in the Telangana elections with its leader and AP CM N Chandrababu Naidu having taken the lead to forge the Mahakutami alliance with the Congress. Though born out of the Congress party, Jagan’s YSRCP could not attempt an alliance with its parent party at any time because of the irreconcilable differences Jagan has with the Congress high command. In the all-important realignment of political alliances, both YSRCP and Jana Sena got marginalised in Telangana, to the point where they no longer have any chance of a reasonable appearance in the polls. The TDP did a balancing act and maintained its influence in the Mahakutami alliance, which has enabled the party to now contest 14 seats under seat-sharing with prospects of putting up a strong fight in most segments there. The police said that the AIMIM workers violated guidelines and permissions that were granted by the concerned Returning Officer, by conducting a bike rally.
Party workers of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) were booked by the Hyderabad police for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), while one of the party leaders was filing his nomination with the Election Commission on Thursday. The police said that the AIMIM workers violated guidelines and permissions that were granted by the concerned Returning Officer, by conducting a bike rally. Another case was booked after party workers flew a drone over their rally, without taking permission from the concerned authorities."We have received a complaint from Election Commission flying squad team stating that on November 15, AIMIM candidate Ahmed Balala came to the Returning Officer's office to file his nomination with a bike rally. We have held one person in connection with the case, and are investigating the matter," Sultan Bazar Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chetana told ANI. In September, the AIMIM released their first list of candidates for the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections. The party, with its core support base in the old city area of Hyderabad, will be contesting in seven seats. All seven sitting MLAs were renominated with a shuffle only in two seats, that of Mumtaz Ahmed Khan and Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri. The party said that Mumtaz Ahmed Khan, the present MLA from Yakutpura constituency, will now contest from Charminar while AIMIM General Secretary and present Charminar legislator Syed Ahmed Pasha, will contest from Yakutpura. Akbaruddin Owaisi, the MLA from Chandrayangutta, who has won the constituency four consecutive times, will continue to contest from his stronghold. Mohammad Moazam Khan, who has been holding the post of Bahadurpura MLA since 2004, will contest from the same seat. Ahmed Bin Abdullah Balala, who won the Malakpet seat successfully in 2009 and 2014, will contest again from the same seat. Jaffer Hussain Meraj, the former deputy mayor of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in 2009 and presently an MLA, will continue to contest from Nampally. Kausar Mohiuddin the MLA from Karwan will contest in the constituency again this year.    The party is also expected to contest from seats outside of its stronghold, in constituencies like Jubilee Hills, Musheerabad and Rajendranagar in Hyderabad besides areas like Nizamabad Urban in Telangana. Telangana is scheduled to go to the polls  on December 7 and the counting of votes will take place on December 11.  Read: How the AIMIM is reaching out to female voters in Hyd with all-women meets

Karanam Prahalad Rao said that he had been working in the party for the last 40 years but his services were not recognized.
The Telangana BJP faced a big blow on Friday as the party’s Vikarabad District president, Karanam Prahalad Rao, sent his resignation to the party’s state president K Laxman after he was denied a ticket from the Parigi Assembly constituency where he wished to contest. “I have been working in the party for the last 40 years and have taken up several programmed in the assembly constituency while strengthening the party. But the party failed to recognise my services,” the BJP leader was quoted as saying. Last month, the BJP's Karimnagar District President in Telangana, Kotha Srinivas Reddy, resigned from his post and from the party after he was denied a ticket for the upcoming polls in Telangana.  Reddy in his resignation letter said that he was upset that the party was not recognising his services and said that he had been actively working with the ABVP and the BJP for the last 25 years. He also thanked all party members and leaders who stood by him. Reddy was denied a ticket in 2014 as a defector was picked for the seat. He also contested the Husnabad Assembly constituency unsuccessfully in 2009. Just earlier this week, the BJP released its third list of 20 candidates for the upcoming Telangana poll, bringing the total number of candidates announced to 86.        All sitting MLAs including Telangana BJP President Dr K Laxman from Musheerabad constituency, got a ticket. G Kishan Reddy was renominated from Amberpet while NVSS Prabhakar is the party’s candidate again from Uppal. Chintala Ramachandra Reddy managed to secure his nomination for Khairatabad again as well. BJP MLC N Ramachander Rao was given a ticket for the Malkajgiri Assembly constituency. Actor-politician Babu Mohan, who had recently jumped to the party after being denied a TRS ticket, was given a nomination from Andhole, a seat reserved for the SC community. The Telangana Assembly was dissolved on September 6 and the Election Commission has said that the fresh polls would be held on December 7. The counting of votes will take place on December 11.

All liquor shops in Telangana and along the border of neighbouring states, located within five km from the state's border will be closed 48 hours before voters head to the polling booth, which is scheduled for December 7. Officials of Telangana on Friday said that an inter-state meeting was held with excise officials of all the states bordering the state, which included Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Chhattisgarh, which also shares a part of its border with Telangana, is also heading to the polls.  Speaking after the meeting, Telangana Principal Secretary (Excise) Somesh Kumar told reporters, "The habitual offenders (related to illegal liquor) on both sides of the borders have been identified and it was agreed to ensure that they would be arrested or bound over as per the case. Dry days will be maintained from 48 hours before the close of polls on December 7." Just earlier this week, the Election Commission said that it had seized  a total of 3,19,335.732 litres of liquor that was unaccounted and was worth Rs 6.66 crore in the market. Out of this, the police department seized 20,677.407 litres of liquor worth Rs 0.71 crore while the Excise Deparment seized 2,98,678.325 litres of liquor worth Rs 5.95 crore. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Telangana Chief Electoral Officer Raja Kumar said that they were seriously looking into complaints of use of money and liquor in the state, adding that swift action was being taken. The EC has also launched a mobile application in Telangana as a pilot project and dubbed it 'C-Vigil'. Available on the Google Playstore, the EC said that the app will allow citizens to report any malpractices that they witness. Matters have been heated in the state since Telangana caretaker Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s decision to dissolve the Legislative Assembly on September 6. Governor ESL Narasimhan ratified the cabinet’s decision on the same day. While voting will take place on December 7, the counting will take place on December 11.

The Hyderabad High Court on Friday asked the Election Commission to go ahead with its original schedule of conducting elections in the state on December 7, and dismissed a petition filed by Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy. Shashidar Reddy had demanded that the polls be postponed and alleged several discrepancies in the final voters list that was published by the EC.  The plea also pointed out that the delimitation process where seven mandals of Khammam district were concerned, which were transferred to Andhra Pradesh, was not done. The court observed that all the guidelines of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014 were followed and also pointed out that merging the seven mandals did not change the total number of Assembly or Parliament constitutes in either state. In September, the Supreme Court ssued notices to the Election Commission, the Union Law Ministry and the Telangana government about the decision to hastily revise the voter rolls in the state. A Bench comprising of Justices AK Sikri and Ashok Bhushan were hearing a petition filed by Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy. Directing the EC to hear objections of voters during the revision of rolls, the court also sought a report from the commission on allegations by the petitioner that there were defects in the names and details on existing voters rolls across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) alleged that there were more than 30 lakh bogus voters in the electoral list being prepared for conducting early elections in the state. The party also demanded that the Election Commission make details of deletions and additions to the voters list from 2015 to 2018, public.  Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao dissolved the state Assembly on September 6 to pave way for early elections. The polling will take place on December 7 and the counting will take place on December 11.

Telangana polls: Congress releases third list, former TPCC chief gets Jangaon ticket

The Jangaon seat went to Ponnala Lakshmaiah after much speculation that it was going to Prof Kodandaram from the TJS.
The Congress released its third and final list of thirteen candidates on Saturday for the Telangana polls scheduled to be held on December 7. In a major development, the highly contentious seat of Jangaon went to former Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah. Others who got tickets include Soyam Bapu Rao from Boath, Taher Bin Hamdan from Nizamabad (Urban), and Dr Rekula Bhupathi Reddy from Nizamabad (Rural). D Sudhir Reddy will contest on a Congress ticket from LB Nagar in the heart of Hyderabad city, while E Anil Kumar will contest Balkonda. Three candidates in the Old City area where the Congress has promised to oust the AIMIM were also announced – K Rajendra Raju for Yakutpura, Kalem Baba from Bahadurpura and Osman Bin Mohammed Al-Hazri from Karwan. Balu Naik for Deverakonda, Addanki Dayakar from Tungathurthy and Banoth Haripriya Naik from Yellandu are also in the fray. The Telangana Congress is presently leading a grand alliance (mahakutami) in the state against the incumbent Telangana Rashtra Samiti(TRS) along with Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS), and the Communist Party of India (CPI). Congress is contesting 93 seats, leaving 14 to the TDP, 8 to the TJS and 3 to the CPI, and 1 to the Telangana Inti Party. The Jangaon seat went to Lakshmaiah after much speculation that it was going to Prof Kodandaram from the TJS. Lakshmaiah rushed to the Congres’s war room in New Delhi and expressed his frustration at being denied the Jangaon ticket, claiming that it would be unjust to the BC community. It is also important to note that Lakshmaiah lost the Jangaon ticket in 2014 to Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy when he was the sitting TPCC president. With D Sudhir Reddy contesting on a Congress ticket, it would mean that TDP strongman and incumbent LB Nagar MLA R Krishnaiah may have to give up his seat. Sudhir was the MLA from 2009-14 from LB Nagar before he lost to Krishnaiah. He’s also the former chairman Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) which has now become the HMDA (Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority). Earlier this month, the Congress released its second list amidst internal rifts in the party. Candidates have already started filing nominations from Monday. The last date for filing nominations is November 19.  Telangana goes to the polls on December 7 and results will be declared on December 11. A lesson from KCR: How to be friends with AIMIM and BJP at the same time

Opinion
It seems KCR wants AIMIM’s support for the upcoming Assembly elections (only) and BJP’s support for the Parliament elections (only).
Image: Facebook/KCR
For those of us that follow politics with academic interest, it is inconceivable that the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), more commonly known as the Majlis Party, based in Hyderabad and the BJP, can be on the same side of a political equation. One might argue that if PDP and BJP can come together, anything can happen! But what is unfolding in Telangana for the last few weeks seems to be opportunistic politics at a different level altogether. Telangana CM KCR pulled off a minor political miracle by forging (unannounced) relationships with both the MIM and BJP.  Telangana CM KCR wants MIM’s support for the upcoming Assembly elections (only) and BJP’s support for the Parliament elections (only). This is impossible to accomplish in ordinary circumstances since Telangana is one of the few states that has simultaneous polls for State Assembly and Lok Sabha in 2019 (which everyone including the Prime Minister wants to happen for all states). So, what does he do? At great expense to public and what has been dubbed an even greater insult to the voters that gave him a full five-year term with clear majority to govern the new state, KCR dissolved the Assembly a good 6 months before his term comes to an end. His stated reasons for doing what is generally considered an extremely irresponsible act are dubious. I tend to believe the speculation that he is doing this to keep his options open – move to the Centre in 2019 and bequeath the CM seat to his son, KTR.   The BJP and the Election Commission helped by not objecting and notifying the elections to the state Assembly to be held in December itself. PM Modi, who is a major advocate for simultaneous polls, also did not protest. KCR fancies his chances to win Telangana again but doesn’t want to take any risk - hence the alliance with MIM which controls a significant voting block not just in Hyderabad but in several districts. BJP seems to have conceded the Assembly in exchange for support in Parliament elections - even their national spokesperson says so on TV!  Come May 2019, KCR is likely to publicly endorse Modi as PM and go to polls along with the BJP (Pretending that MIM doesn’t exist). BJP desperately needs to make up for seats that will be lost in Uttar Pradesh and Hindi belt and in KCR and the TRS, they perhaps see a replacement to Chandrababu Naidu and the TDP. As the opposition consolidates under Congress, KCR will have great bargaining power with BJP to land himself in the Union Cabinet and execute the long rumoured succession plan to install his son, KTR as CM of Telangana. Game. Set. Match. KCR orchestrated all of this quite well as he always does but probably did not see the curve ball coming in the form of most unexpected coalition of Congress (main opposition) and TDP (battered but still commands vote share), along with TJS (new party started by Prof Kodandaram, a prominent leader in the Telangana movement along with KCR but has since fallen out) with a common goal to dislodge TRS. They are not exactly friends, but they realise they cannot beat KCR on their own.   The combined (and desperate for power) forces of TDP and Congress are likely to give formidable fight to TRS.  In 2014, the combined vote share of TDP + Congress (40%) was more than that of TRS (34%). Things have changed since 2014, but it is no secret that electoral politics, especially in this state, revolve around caste, money and muscle power. It is now a battle of who gets the arithmetic right! KCR may end up in the opposition at both the state and Centre and, I, for one, will not be surprised if that happens. I think he made a huge mistake by dissolving Assembly well ahead of schedule, but then, he is the political mastermind, not me!  The voters of Telangana have a tough election ahead of them.  Views expressed are the authors own.

Telangana polls: Upset after being denied tickets, 40 Cong leaders form 'Rebel Front'

Former minister Boda Janardhan, leading the front, said that the rebel leaders want justice, and that the Congress has to answer.
Trouble is brewing in the Telangana Congress as a group of 40 leaders and aspirants, who were denied tickets for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state, have decided to form their own ‘Rebel Front’ and contest independently in their home ground. A group of rebel leaders, led by former Ministers Boda Janardhan (who aspired for the Chennur ticket) and Vijayarama Rao, who wanted the Station Ghanpur ticket for the Congress, met at the former’s house on Friday evening. Speaking to reporters after the meet, Janardhan said that the mahakutami (grand alliance) -- being forged in the state with the Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and CPI -- was handing out tickets to those who had defected from other parties and those who had lost more than three elections consecutively. "Our demand is simple. We want justice. Or else, we will form our own front and around 40 of our rebels will contest independently. If Congress loses, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President Uttam Kumar must take responsibility. He is the one who has meted out injustice and gave tickets to weak candidates," he said."We are planning to call it the Telangana Rebel Front and we are planning to go to polls with a common symbol. We will release a list of the names in a day or two," he added. Boda Janardhan had joined the Congress in 2013, when he defected to the party from the YSRCP along with two other MLAs."Those who parachuted into the party don't deserve tickets. How they were screened and selected must be explained by the TPCC President,” Vijayarama Rao told reporters. Speaking to TNM, Janardhan said, “The Bahujan Left Front (BLF), which is a joint front of 28 organisations and parties, has reached out to us and begun talks. Their front and our front are planning to contest as a joint alliance. They have promised us 40 seats that we want to contest.” When asked if the Congress or TPCC reached out to them, he said, “Congress leaders have reached out and asked us not to contest, but we are determined. The TPCC chief is yet to reach out to us. Injustice has been meted out and we are demanding answers. We have the right to contest and we are confident of victory. Our constituents are asking us to contest, which is why we are going with them.” “It is too early to talk about whether we will rejoin the Congress after the election. We are going forward and contesting. Some of us may win and some of us may lose. We will sit down and talk with Congress leaders after the election accordingly,” he added. Rift in T-TDP? Meanwhile, rifts were also evident in the Telangana unit of the TDP after a few leaders were denied tickets for the upcoming polls. Senior TDP leader Bandru Shobha Rani was also upset after being denied a ticket and was in tears as she spoke to reporters outside NTR Bhavan, the party's headquarters in Hyderabad, on Friday. Speaking to a local media outlet, she said, "We have done hard work on the ground. When the party was in dire straits, we were the ones who worked. We participated in several agitations and protests for the party, yet there are people who are not even being allowed into the office. Our entire life and families are destroyed.""As a woman, I put my family aside and worked for the party. In 2004, it was on a call given by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu that I entered the party, but what have I got? Many leaders promised me the Alair ticket, but they have cheated us," she added, as she broke down. Telangana goes to the polls on December 7 and counting takes place on December 11. The last date for filing nomination is November 19.
