Telangana 2018
Suhasini, the daughter of late N. Harikrishna, is contesting from Kukatpally Assembly constituency in Hyderabad as a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate.
TDP founder NT Rama Rao's grand-daughter N Suhasini, who is contesting the next month's elections to Telangana Assembly, on Saturday received support from her brothers and popular Telugu actors Junior NTR and Kalyan Ram and uncle and veteran actor N Balakrishna. Suhasini, the daughter of late N. Harikrishna, is contesting from Kukatpally Assembly constituency in Hyderabad as a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) candidate. Harikrishna, a leader of TDP and former minister and former MP, died in a road accident on August 29. Balakrishna, Junior NTR and Kalyan Ram are likely to campaign for Suhasini in Kuktpally, a constituency with large chunk of 'settlers', as people from Andhra Pradesh are usually called. Accompanied by Balakrishna, Suhasini on Saturday visited NTR Ghat here to pay tribute to her grandfather before filing her nomination."I am entering the public life with the blessings of my grandfather, father and uncle and I seek the support of Telugu women," she told reporters. Balakrishna said Suhasini will be carrying forward their ideals. He appealed to people to support her the way they had been supporting TDP. He urged youth, fans and party workers to come together and ensure Suhasini's victory with a huge majority, saying this would be the best tribute they can pay to Harikrishna. Meanwhile, junior NTR and Kalyan Ram also expressed their best wishes for their sister's victory. They said in a joint statement that the TDP is a sacred organisation for them as their grandfather founded the party with the belief that people are god. The young actors said that their family believes that woman should play an important role in the society. "Our sister wants to serve the people with the same spirit. We wish her all the best," they said. The TDP, which is the ruling party in Andhra Pradesh, is contesting Telangana polls in alliance with Congress and two other parties. Elections to 119-member Telangana Assembly are scheduled on December 7. The TDP has been allotted 14 seats under a seat sharing agreement in 'Mahakutami' or grand alliance led by Congress party. TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu picked Suhasini as the party candidate for Kukatpally, a seat won by the party in the 2014 elections.

The residents of Goshamahal lament that their constituency didn’t develop under BJP MLA Raja Singh’s term as their legislator.

Showing his mighty strength, with an army of supporters, former Minister Mukesh Goud led a procession from the Ram Mandir in Sitarambagh on Saturday before filing his nomination at Abids, GHMC office. Goud is contesting from the Goshamahal constituency. He is a two-time MLA and lost the previous elections. Akin to his bike procession, a few days ago, the incumbent MLA and rival, controversial BJP leader T Raja Singh had filed the nomination before starting his rally from Hanuman Temple in Goshamahal, accompanied by BJP senior leader and poll strategist Ram Madhav.   While one leader represents the soft Hindutva politics, the other is a Hindutva hardliner from the state, infamous for making hateful comments through social media, particularly targeting the Muslim community. He had made news recently when he promised of renaming Hyderabad as ‘Bhagyanagar’ if the BJP comes to power.    However, these politics of Hindutva or soft-Hindutva doesn’t matter to voters of Goshamahal. They are more concerned about drainage system and drinking water. Mukesh Goud on his way to file the nomination Goshamahal constituency was created in 2008 from Mahargunj Assembly constituency after delimitation. It comprises 7 divisions, namely: Dattatreya Nagar, Begum Bazar, Gunfoundry, Mangalhat, Goshamahal, Begum Bazar and Jam Bagh.   “There is a problem of drainage overflowing and sometimes the drainage water gets mixed into the drinking water, this is one of the major problems in our constituency,” a resident of Goshamahal, who supports the Congress, tells TNM. “MLA Raja Singh ignored this problem and the residents have been facing the consequences,” he adds. Though this resident, who supports the Congress, is unsure if Mukesh Goud will be re-elected to power, he says that residents are likely to vote for those who promise and convince the voters of resolving these key issues will be elected. “Who cares what Raja Singh says, ultimately what matters is if he has done any welfare,” says Abu, a resident of Aghapura. He says that Singh will face a defeat as he hasn’t delivered on his promises. “His own people are not happy with him,” Abu says. According to Abu, the Lodhis, the community to which Singh belongs to, are dissatisfied with him. The Lodhi community have been traditionally brewing arrack in Dhoolpet. However, the state government cracked a whip and forced them to shut down their operations, leaving several of them unemployed. The community was offered rehabilitation in the form of alternative jobs. However, very few of them were provided jobs, according to Abu. A woman, who sold arrack, told TNM on the condition of anonymity, “Not just us, nobody is happy with him. You can ask anyone. He hasn’t once visited our lanes to know our problems.” A silent campaign by AAP The Aam Aadmi Party, headed by MM Hussain from Goshamahal, has also been effectively galvanizing a possible anti-incumbency wave in the constituency. According to the party workers, they have assigned 10 party workers for each division, who have been campaigning to elect AAP. According to the residents of Goshamahal, Hussain has the public goodwill and his supporters too, have been campaigning based on local issues like drinking water, better drainage facilities and the revamping of government schools. Vijay Babu, an AAP activist, says, “Our campaign is based only on the local problems. We are trying to ape the Delhi election campaign strategy, which helped us win in Delhi. We believe that this will help us to win in Goshamahal too.” Another activist joins in and adds, “The people here are quite unaware of what they are entitled to and what welfare schemes are there, which we have been helping them with. We help them with information like which office they should approach when they have a particular problem, etc. So, the people see us as an alternative,” he says. While the AAP is confident about pulling off a Delhi-like win from the constituency, they seemed have galvanized the anti-incumbency sentiment against sitting MLA Raja Singh. Making his victory harder is former BJP MLA Prem Singh Rathode, who defected to the TRS in 2016 and is contesting from Goshamahal on a TRS ticket. Rathode had lost the 2009 elections to Mukesh Goud with a margin of 20,488 votes. However, the two-time legislator from the then Mahargunj Assembly constituency is still considered a heavyweight. Goshamahal, which is part of the old city, adjoining Nampally, has more than 3 lakh voters, and the majority of them are Hindus. It is to be seen whether Raja Singh’s politics of ‘Muslim-bashing’ would help him come back to power or will local issues be his Achilles heel.

5 political objectives Chandrababu Naidu can achieve by fielding NTR’s granddaughter

Telangana 2018
By fielding Nandamuri Suhasini, Chandrababu Naidu shows it’s not merely a choice but a well thought out strategy for the Telangana elections.
Andhra Chief Minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo N Chandrababu Naidu is fielding NT Rama Rao's granddaughter Nandamuri Suhasini as a party nominee from the Kukatpally Assembly constituency of Hyderabad city in the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections. Suhasini is the daughter of N Harikrishna, who passed away recently in a road accident. Naidu's decision is not a mere choice, but a well thought out strategy of the TDP leadership, by which Chandrababu Naidu wishes to accomplish several political objectives. Ready for the long haul By fielding someone from his immediate family, Naidu sends a clear signal to his political adversaries in Telangana that he is ready for the long haul, despite the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) calling him an Andhra leader and the TDP an Andhra party. The TRS, including its president and caretaker Chief Minister of Telangana K Chandrasekhar Rao has been lamenting that Chandrababu Naidu should be confined to the 175 seats in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, and that he has no role to play in Telangana’s politics post-bifurcation. The basis for this argument, as KCR has said in his address in a series of public meetings, is that the very movement for a separate Telangana state was launched and achieved to liberate the region from Andhra’s political dominance. However, undeterred by the vehement political onslaught, Naidu wants to send a message by fielding Suhasini that his party TDP, founded by NT Rama Rao, stands for the unity and progress of all Telugus, whether in Andhra Pradesh or Telangana.   Morale booster Suhasini's entry is expected not only to enthuse the party’s rank and file in Telangana but also instil confidence in the Seemandhra natives who live in Telangana and have a decisive vote share in several constituencies, especially in Hyderabad city. In fact, post the bifurcation of the state in 2014 and later, Naidu continued to play an active role in Telangana politics and led the TDP in its anti-KCR fight, which resulted in handsome electoral gains for the party in the 2014 elections. The TDP won 15 seats and its electoral ally, BJP, won five seats. The combine stood second in many constituencies. This is certainly impressive when compared to the performance of the Congress, which delivered Telangana, the long cherished dream of the people of this region. But then, the cash-for-vote scam broke out, in which Naidu was allegedly heard conspiring to lure a nominated MLA to vote for the TDP in the Legislative Council elections by offering a cash bribe. The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau is currently investigating the scam. Subsequently, Naidu stopped playing an active role in Telangana politics, and confined himself to the role of a mentor. This demoralised the Telangana TDP (T-TDP) and made the party rudderless. Meanwhile, thanks to the political management of the TRS, many TDP legislators defected to the ruling TRS, further demoralising the T-TDP. There is even speculation in political circles that KCR and Naidu had an unwritten understanding, by which Naidu confines himself to Amaravati and in return, the investigation in the cash-for-vote scam is diluted. One may or may not believe this theory, but the fact remains that Naidu has been inactive in Telangana politics. At one point in time, the T-TDP even requested Naidu to send his son, Nara Lokesh, to the state party. Naidu remained silent, and subsequently, Lokesh was inducted into the Andhra Pradesh state cabinet and he was elected to the Andhra Legislative Council, shattering the hopes of the T-TDP. Using NTR legacy to checkmate rivals However, the TRS may not be too far behind, as it is concentrating its attack only on Naidu, while holding NT Rama Rao in high regard. Naidu's decision would checkmate critics who lament that the TDP’s alliance with Congress is a betrayal of NTR's political legacy. This is a clever move by the TRS to satisfy the Seemandhra electorate in Telangana and convince them that TRS is not against them, but only oppose Naidu. In fact, Telangana IT minister and KCR's son KT Rama Rao said this in his address to people from Seemandhra as part of his election-eve reachout exercise. KCR has continued to have good relations with NTR's family, and was even present at the film commencement event of Gautamiputra Satakarni featuring NTR's son and TDP MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna. KCR has even promised a memorial for Nandamuri Harikrishna, despite criticism from Telangana loyalists. Perhaps, Naidu calculated that it will be difficult for the TRS to attack NTR's granddaughter, although she is TDP’s nominee. Naidu would like to tell the world that NTR's granddaughter is now contesting, with the support of even Congress. With the decision to bring in Suhasini, Naidu may wish to fulfil the request of the T-TDP to provide someone from the first family of the party. Appealing to Seemandhra voters in Telangana YS Jaganmohan Reddy also, at a point in time, toyed with the idea of continuing in Telangana politics. There was also speculation in YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) circles that Jagan would field his sister, Sharmila, in Telangana. Sharmila undertook the padayatra on behalf of Jagan when he was in jail for his alleged corruption deals, which are being investigated by CBI. However, since then, Sharmila has remained passive. The YSRCP won three Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seats in 2014. But somehow, Jagan decided to withdraw from Telangana politics and recently, chose not to contest in the upcoming elections. There are lakhs of people from Seemandhra in the Telangana region. The TDP or YSRCP would emotionally appeal to the electorate of Andhra Pradesh too if they remain in Telangana politics, given the presence of Seemandhra natives in Telangana. Thus, Naidu would like to score over YS Jagan by taking an anti-TRS position in Telangana politics. The presence of his own family members would bolster this strategy. Cementing ties between families There has been a chequered political relationship between the Nara and Nandamuri families. N Hari Krishna even split from Naidu and floated his own party, only to return to TDP’s fold. NTR's daughter D Purandareshwari joined the Congress and later defected to the BJP. NTR's son, actor Balakrishna — whose daughter is married to Lokesh — is now the TDP MLA from Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh. Given this complex political relationship between Nara and Nandamuri families, Naidu would like to cement these relations by fielding Harikrishna's daughter in Telangana politics, which will not, in any way, hurt his political succession plans in Andhra Pradesh.

Varavara Rao’s arrest comes a day after the Hyderabad High Court refused to set aside the transit order allowing the Maharashtra police to take him to Pune.
After the Hyderabad High Court dismissed the petition of revolutionary writer and Left ideologue P Varavara Rao, the Pune police took him into custody on Saturday evening, even as he protested. Rao is accused is of plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he and his family have denied vehemently. The Hyderabad High Court on Friday refused to set aside the transit remand order issued by the chief metropolitan magistrate, Hyderabad. The lower court had on August 28 issued the transit demand facilitating the Maharashtra police to take Rao to Pune in connection with the case relating to clashes at Bhima Koregaon in January. Varavara Rao had challenged the validly of the transit remand. Following the High Court’s order, the Pune police came to Hyderabad on the same day. However, they did not arrest Rao, since it was too late in the night. Learning about the imminent arrest, several activists had thronged Rao's residence in Gandhi Nagar and protested. However, the Pune police took him in to custody at around 9.15 pm on Saturday, according to family members. Rao reportedly said that though the police don’t have a fresh warrant, he’s accompanying them to not create any trouble. He argued that the transit warrant issued by the local court had expired. Varavara Rao’s wife, Hemalatha told TNM, “They did not produce the High Court order or show fresh warrant.” Rao was first arrested on August 28 along with activists Arun Ferriera, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves. A case was booked against human rights activist Sudha Bharadwaj as well. She is also presently under police custody. These activists are also accused of inciting violence in Bhima Koregaon, Pune. However, the Supreme Court intervened against their arrest and directed that they be under house arrest until September 6. Plot to kill Prime Minister Modi In June this year, police in Pune had allegedly recovered a letter mentioning a plan to assassinate PM Modi from the house of one of the five persons arrested in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence. The letter, written by a person identified only as 'R', reportedly mentions a plot to kill the Prime Minister on the lines of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It also referred to a requirement of Rs 8 crore to purchase a M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds to execute the plot. The letter reportedly mentions Varvara Rao's name. Varavara Rao, who heads Virasam, an association of revolutionary writers, had strongly denied the allegations. He had said that all five arrested in the case were working for the betterment of the downtrodden. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad at the time, Rao had said, “I have absolutely nothing to do with the claims made in the letter. The police cannot do anything other than arrest me and foist false cases against me. The people arrested by the Pune police had all been working for the downtrodden and the release of political prisoners. They are not involved in murder politics.” He had also alleged that the letter was planted. IANS inputs

A 29-year-old man killed a 70-year-old woman in Pochampally, Yadadri district in Telangana, reportedly inspired by CID and Crime Patrol crime series. He also allegedly raped the victim before choking her to death. The incident took place on November 8, and two weeks later, the police arrested the accused who tried to mislead them by making the crime scene look like it was an act of black magic. Two weeks ago, the police found the woman dead and were further shocked to see the crime scene. Her mouth was stuffed with goat’s intestines. She had vermillion powder sprinkled all over her and drenched in cooking oil, in a bid to erase the fingerprints, police said. According to the LB Nagar police, the accused, Deenanath Tiwari, a native of Bihar was working as a machine supervisor in a textile unit in Pochampally. He was residing opposite the house owned by the deceased woman. The police said that the victim lived with her son in Hyderabad but visited Pochampally every month to collect her pension. She is rumoured to have possessed gold and other valuables. The woman, who is survived by four daughters and a son, celebrated Diwali at her house in Pochampally. However, after the festival, the children left, while the woman stayed back to collect her pension. As the woman was alone, Tiwari broke into the house in an inebriated state. A report in The New Indian Express says that the man raped the woman before choking her to death. According to the police, Tiwari then burgled her silver bangles and Rs 18,000 from her house. Before leaving, he stuffed goat intestines, which was offered to him by his owner, and tried to evade the arrest by hiding his evidence. However, the DNA analysis of hair samples collected from the crime spot led to his arrest, the police informed. Deccan Chronicle quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police, Yadadri zone, E Ramachandra Reddy as saying, “The accused used to watch CID, Crime Patrol and learnt ways of committing murder and concealing evidence. He sprinkled vermillion over the victim’s place and body to conceal evidence. He also tried to stuff goat’s intestines in her mouth to divert police sniffer dogs. The accused took care of all angles and made it look like black magic.”

Congress spokesperson Sravan Dasoju had also objected to the EC issuing pink colour ballot papers.
The Election Commission has decided against using ‘pink-coloured booths’ for women polling stations in Telangana after the Congress party complained that pink colour represents the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party. The EC said that there will not be any colour-specific booths in the upcoming Telangana polls scheduled to be held on December 7. Addressing the media on Saturday, Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar said, “This is to avoid any inadvertent use of the colour of any particular political party in or at such polling booths.” Kumar further added that the woman employed at the polling booths can wear clothes of any colour of their choice. “No single colour should be used for paraphernalia associated with the construction of such polling stations,” News 18 quoted him saying.   A few days ago, Congress spokesperson Sravan Dasoju gave a representation to the EC against designing women booths in pink colour, as the colour is associated with the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led TRS party. Sravan also objected to the EC issuing pink colour ballot papers, claiming that it is against the spirit of free and fair elections. He said that the EC took no action against their objection to print pink ballot paper, thereby unconstitutionally favouring the TRS party.   He earlier had said, “It is incumbent on the ECI to fulfil the constitutional responsibilities and ensure that free and fair elections are conducted in Telangana.” The ECI had proposed printing 90 lakh ballot papers in pink colour. Meanwhile, a total of 643 candidates filed their nominations on Saturday, which included several key leaders like Akbaruddin Owaisi, G Kishan Reddy and Nandamuri Harikrishna’s daughter, Suhasini. According to EC, from the Congress, a total of 57 candidates filed their nominations on day 6, 56 from BJP, 44 from TRS, 40 from BSP, 16 from TDP, 12 from NCP, 12 from CPI (M) and 1 each from YSRCP and CPI. These nominations will be scrutinised on November 20. The last date for candidature withdrawal is November 22. The assembly elections results will be announced on December 11.

After the Secunderabad Cantt ticket was given to his father-in-law, Sarvey Satyanarayana, Krishank had earlier said he would contest as an independent.
The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) spokesperson Krishank Manne, in a video on Saturday, announced that he would not be contesting in the upcoming Telangana elections. A prominent leader of the Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OUJAC), Krishank worked his way up the ranks to party spokesperson after joining the Congress when Telangana was formed. In a 10-minute-long Facebook Live entitled ‘The Last Word’, Krishank announced that he would not be filing his nomination for the upcoming polls. “I am taking this decision out of compulsion, out of weakness, please forgive me,” he said. He added, “The situations which have come now, that if I would contest as a rebel candidate, it would be helpful for the sitting TRS MLA to win again, because there would be a possible vote division and the present MLA has not done good for the people (sic).”   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v3.2'; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); The Last Word Posted by Krishank M on Saturday, November 17, 2018 Krishank was vying for the Secunderabad Cantonment ticket, which went to his father-in-law, Sarvey Satyanarayana, a former union minister. Krishank’s supporters staged a sit-in at Gandhi Bhavan, and Krishank announced that he would contest as an independent, and as a dissident, from the same constituency. He wondered how the party can field a man who was defeated thrice in the past. A senior leader in the Congress, Sarvey Sathyanarayana had bagged the Malkajgiri MP seat in 2009 but has faced two defeats since – in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and again in the Warangal Assembly bye-election in 2015. Earlier, supporters of Krishank, who was denied a ticket in 2014 too, accused Sathyanarayana of stonewalling his attempts to get a ticket. “There are more than a dozen people in the Congress who dream of being the Chief Minister of Telangana. Everyone knows that. Sarvey Sathyanarayana is the latest addition to that list,” a Congress leader on condition of anonymity had said earlier. In his video, Krishank said that while he did not know if he would be in politics for the next five years (for the next elections), he would continue to fight. Krishank had started a campaign called ‘Basti Nidra’ or ‘sleeping in the slum’ to understand the issues of the locals in the Secunderabad Cantonment area.

If the alliance comes to power, Prof Kodandaram would be made the chairman of the common minimum programme (CMP).
Prof M Kodandaram, the chief of the Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS), which is a part of the mahakutami, will not be contesting in the upcoming Telangana polls. Instead, if the alliance comes to power, he would be made the chairman of the common minimum programme (CMP). The CMP outlines what the coalition government plans to do during its tenure. “This is in the form of a resolution of the alliance partners. Some of these proposals were long pending, but finally, they were put in written form,” Prof Kodandaram told TNM. He will reportedly be campaigning for candidates. The Telangana Congress is presently leading a grand alliance (mahakutami) in the state against the incumbent Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) along with Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the TJS and the Communist Party of India (CPI). The TJS had initially demanded 17 seats as part of the mahakutami but the Congress had announced only 8. However, in a jolt to the alliance, the TJS said that they would be contesting 12 seats. Among these was Jangaon, where it was speculated that Prof Kodandaram would contest from. As part of the Congress’ third list that was released on Saturday, the Jangaon seat went to former Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah. Lakshmaiah had rushed to the Congress’ war room in New Delhi and expressed his frustration at being denied the Jangaon ticket, claiming that it would be unjust to the BC community. Interestingly, when Lakshmaiah was the sitting TPCC president he lost the Jangaon seat in 2014 to Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy of the TRS. With the ticket being given to the Congress, a resolution was taken to make Prof Kodandaram the chairman of the committee to implement the CMP.  The decision was reportedly brokered in a meeting with Congress secretary in-charge of Telangana RC Khuntia, TPCC chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and Ponnala Laksmaiah late on Friday night. Following this, the TJS announced the names of four candidates who will be contesting – Kapilavai Dilip Kumar from Malkajgiri, Bhavani Reddy from Siddipet, Janardhan Reddy from Medak and Chindam Raj Kumar from Dubbak. The state will go to the polls on December 7 and counting of votes will take place on December 11. The last date for filing nominations is November 19.

KCR and his family performed the Raja Shyamala Chandi Homam, and Chandi Sahitha Rudra Homam was performed by leaders of the TRS
Telangana’s incumbent Chief Minister and Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhar Rao performed two homams at his farmhouse in Erravalli in Siddipet district prior to the state’s upcoming elections. KCR will be campaigning across the state from November 19. Known to be deeply superstitious, KCR and his family performed the Raja Shyamala Chandi Homam, and Chandi Sahitha Rudra Homam was performed by leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti. According to Hans India, the homam is being conducted for people’s welfare. They were performed by several priests. No mediapersons were allowed at the venue. According to India Today, the ritual was a closed-door affair. According to the New Indian Express, the two-day ritual was performed by 120 priests. This, however, is not the first time that KCR is performing rituals for something particular. In 2015, he performed a Rs 15 crore ‘Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagnam’, due to Telangana’s drought and scanty rainfall, even as the state was plagued by farmer suicides.   “Telangana government is not funding this event. It is personal and the expenses are being borne by KCR, his party members and friends but they have invited everyone to witness the event and be a part of it,” Kalvakunta Kavitha, MP and KCR’s daughter said at the time. This ritual was held at the farmhouse. Before filing his nomination for the December 7 Assembly polls, KCR visited the Lord Venkateshwara temple at Koinapally in Siddipet district and performed a pooja at 11:15 am, where he presented his paper in front of the presiding deity. He has been following this ritual since 1983. While inaugurating the 2 BHK scheme, he held a massive housewarming scheme, at Erravalli and Narsannapet villages in Siddipet. He had reportedly even performed rituals similar to those performed on Saturday and Sunday in 2011, asking for Telangana state to be formed, according to Indian Express. Telangana goes to polls on December 7, and the counting of votes will be on December 11.

A three-member committee deputed by the central leadership of the Congress party on Sunday held talks with the party's Telangana leaders who were unhappy over being denied the ticket for next month's elections to the state Assembly. The panel headed by Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy met the dissident leaders at a hotel in Hyderabad to dissuade them from contesting as rebel candidates. Karnataka's Irrigation Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Puducherry's Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao are the other members of the committee. The leaders assured the dissidents that they will be rewarded suitably after the party comes to power. They advised the dissidents not to enter the fray as rebels as this would mar the prospects of the 'Mahakutami' or grand alliance headed by the Congress. The dissidents were also asked to work for the victory of the 'Mahakutami'. Former minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, senior leader V. Hanumantha Rao, party spokesman Ramya Rao and others met the committee members and made certain suggestions. After meeting the committee members, Palvai Sravanthi, one of the dissidents, announced that she will not contest as a rebel. The state leadership has identified at least 90 ticket aspirants who were miffed over not being fielded as party candidates. Some of them plan to contest as rebels. Party sources said 40-50 dissidents would meet the committee over the next two days. Earlier, the Congress party's central leadership on Saturday summoned senior leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy to New Delhi hours after he expressed resentment over being denied a ticket. With his name missing from the third list, Shashidhar Reddy blamed party's state president Uttam Kumar Reddy. He alleged that Uttam Kumar misled the screening committee by stating that he will not win the election. Addressing a news conference, Shashidhar expressed surprise over reports that Congress has left Sanathnagar seat to its ally Telugu Desam Party (TDP) under the seat-sharing agreement. He said TDP never demanded this seat. Son of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Marri Chenna Reddy, Shashidhar was elected to the assembly four times from Sanathnagar. He had lost 2014 election. Elections to the 119-member Assembly are scheduled for December 7. The Congress declared 6 more candidates on Sunday. The party has decided to leave 25 seats to its three allies including Telugu Desam Party (TDP).  IANS inputs Read: Telangana polls: Upset after being denied tickets, 40 Cong leaders form 'Rebel Front'

A letter was handed over to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajat Kumar by TRS MLC and senior party leader Sreenivas Reddy.
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) filed a complaint with the Election Commission on Sunday, alleging that the neighbouring government of Andhra Pradesh, where the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is presently in power, was attempting to influence the election in Telangana through advertisements. A letter was handed over to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajat Kumar by TRS MLC and senior party leader Sreenivas Reddy. “You are aware that the Government of Andhra Pradesh is giving advertisements in all leading Telugu TV channels in the state of Telangana in which the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is appealing to the people. He is the President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the said party is contesting in the upcoming elections in this state, and as such, the advertisements will have its impact on the voters,” the complaint states. The letter also said that though a similar complaint had been filed with the EC in the past, the Andhra Pradesh government was yet to stop airing the advertisements. “It is requested to take action to ban all such advisements on TV, till the conclusion of the election,” it added. Last month, the TRS had accused Naidu of exploiting Andhra’s police intelligence and using personnel to distribute cash in poll-bound Telangana state. Addressing the media, caretaker IT Minister KT Rama Rao said, “Crores of Andhra Pradesh public money is wasted and spent here. While we are not allowed to do campaigns, the TDP, which is contesting in the elections, is allowed to publicise. The Election Commission should intervene and stop this.” After bifurcation of the state, though several offices including the secretariat were shifted to Andhra Pradesh, the AP DGP office continues to function from Hyderabad. As per AP Reorganization Act, they are entitled to work from Hyderabad for a period of 10 years as it is a common capital of both states for the specified time period.

Miryalguda is a key seat and the Congress seems to have chosen R Krishnaiah, a prominent BC leader.
Ahead of the last day for filing nominations for the Telangana Assembly elections, the Congress in New Delhi finally released the remaining six candidates that it was going to field for the upcoming polls, scheduled to be held on December 7. The candidates announced are Juvvadi Narsingh Rao for Koratla, Suresh Kumar Shetkar for Narayankhed, Kasani Gnaneshwar Mudiraj for Secunderabad, Vamanagiri Krishna for Narayanpet, Dr Paban Kumar Reddy for Devarkadra and R Krishnaiah for Miryalguda. Miryalguda is a key seat and the Congress seems to have chosen R Krishnaiah, a prominent BC leader, keeping in mind the presence of the massive BC community in the constituency. This also means that the Congress has denied the ticket to Raghuveer Reddy, the son of party heavyweight K Jana Reddy, despite intense lobbying.   The Congress on Saturday released its third list of 13 candidates for the Telangana Assembly polls, fielding party veteran and former Andhra Pradesh Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah. Lakshmaiah would be contesting from the Jangaon constituency in Warangal district, which has sent him to the Assembly four times in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.  The Congress is heading a four-party alliance called 'Mahakutami' and has left 24 seats for its three allies -- the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) and Communist Party of India. The Jangaon seat went to Lakshmaiah after much speculation that it was going to Prof Kodandaram from the TJS. Lakshmaiah rushed to the Congress’ war room in New Delhi and expressed his frustration at being denied the Jangaon ticket, claiming that it would be unjust to the BC community. It is also important to note that Lakshmaiah lost the Jangaon ticket in 2014 to Muthireddy Yadagiri Reddy when he was the sitting Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president. The last date for filing nominations is November 19.  Telangana goes to the polls on December 7 and results will be declared on December 11.  IANS inputs

‘We need honest politicians’: Ravinder Uppula, techie contesting in Hyd elections

Telangana 2018
Having lost the elections in 2014, Uppula is up for a second race in a major fight against corruption in the state.
It is election time in Telangana and the state is all set to go to polls on December 7. Being India’s youngest state, 2018 election results will be a report card for the incumbent TRS government that came into power right after the bifurcation wave that helped the party sweep the 2014 polls. While TRS is fighting its main battle against the Mahakutami, an alliance of Congress, TDP, TJS and several other parties, several independent candidates belonging to diverse social spectrums have also become a part of the fight this election season. One such candidate is Ravindra Uppula, 46, a techie working with the IT giant Infosys in Hyderabad, who aims to steer clear of the political system of corruption if voted into power in the Serlingampally constituency. TNM spoke to Uppula about his political aspirations, the working IT populace in one of the richest constituencies in Telangana and his fight as an independent candidate without any political backing. You contested the 2014 polls and lost the election after winning only a few hundred seats. And four years later, you have again filed your nomination and seem to be clearer about your political aspirations. What makes you think the people would vote for you this time, considering that you are a candidate with no absolute political backing? In 2014, I made three major promises to the people. Firstly, I promised not to resort to any sort of corruption and take a single rupee, be it in the form of donations or gifts, even during my election campaigning. Secondly, I promised people to give a report card after every 100 days of work if I was elected into power. I promised accountability and transparency in the political system. Thirdly, I assured people that I would take a lie detector test if my accountability was under question, and prove that I haven’t taken a single rupee in the last 100 days of my work. But in 2014, the situation was different and the burning issue was the state bifurcation that had the emotions of the people at its peak. I lost miserably and the winning candidate had a landslide victory. The sitting MLA couldn’t even recover his deposit money. This year, the bifurcation issue is history. I have made the same promises to people in my constituency this year too and have reinstated my statement that it is honest people that the state requires now. The Serlingampally constituency mostly has well-read, educated people and I leave it to their good judgement to choose what’s best for them. Because people are definitely disappointed with the current state of affairs after vesting power in the hands of an MLA who had a landslide majority in 2014. An alumnus of NIT Warangal, you are an IT professional with over 20 years of experience in the field, with a family who lives in Hyderabad. So what explains this plunge into politics? Everybody is disappointed with the current state of affairs in our country. Be it at a professional or even a lunch gathering, people talk of change but nobody is ready to come forward to be the actual change. So if I am so worried about the issues plaguing my country, I cannot sit idle and wait for someone to come and do it for me. I have realised that corruption is the root cause of majority of social issues in this country. Our politicians are, no doubt, smart and intelligent people, but they spend their energy in channeling ideas to create wealth around themselves. If you see a politician laying roads, it’s very less likely that he/she is doing it for the welfare of the people and not for his personal benefit. So if a person like me can promise accountability and transparency in the way an elected government functions, that would definitely set a precedent in front of the people who place their trust in the candidate every time he/she is voted into power. Serilingampally is one of the constituencies that pay the highest property tax, but very little of it is used for its own welfare. Bad roads, frenzied construction, higher number of road accidents; all are issues that have been worrying the voters here. So apart from tackling corruption, which one of these will be your first priority if elected into power? I am part of two groups that have been working towards conserving lakes in our city, especially restoring the Nalagandla lake and another group that has been fighting the industrial pollution in the constituency. I value these two causes highly. But the first and foremost worrisome issue has always been the roads. We are a state that is home to world-class companies. We have more than one lakh IT employees in the constituency who provide solutions to other companies on how to deliver products in a couple of hours and suggesting more accessible modes of transit. So if we can solve problems for people sitting abroad, why can’t we find solutions to our own? There is a common perception that techies are a group who remain the most aloof from electoral politics. In 2014 also, Serilingampally was the constituency that saw the least number of people coming out to vote. So being a techie yourself, what do you think is the reason behind this lack of interest? I would not agree to the perception that techies are people who are not bothered about the problems in this country. They are loyal citizens who regularly pay taxes and are law-abiding. In my company itself, there are several people who work with NGOs and other charitable organisations, especially the youngsters. They are definitely concerned about the development of the country but they are not into politics. They consider politics futile. They are ready to do their bit for their country but do not like to discuss politics. So, if there is a perception that IT people are not interested in the welfare of this country, it is false. But it is true that you see very few people IT professionals in politics because they do not believe in the system, they consider it as a muddy environment. This I would say is wrong and I would like to prove them wrong by setting an example myself. Without a proper political backing, what are your major modes of campaign? How are you reaching out to people? Last year, I distributed more than 1.75 lakh pamphlets in the entire constituency. That has been my primary mode of campaign. This year I am planning to distribute at least 3 lakh pamphlets, and I have made a core team of 25 people which includes my friends, neighbours, family and colleagues. This year I have expanded my campaigning through social media as well, mainly through Facebook, WhatsApp and LinkedIn, where I have already received an overwhelming response from people. I am waiting for the EC to provide me with an election symbol so that I can reach out to a larger number of people in an efficient manner.

Meanwhile, the Congress-led grand alliance has allotted the seat to the TJS party's Bhavani Reddy, a seemingly unknown rookie.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going all out to ensure it puts up a tough fight against incumbent Siddipet MLA and Telangana caretaker Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao, one of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi's (TRS) tallest leaders. At the entrance of Siddipet town, a temporary party office has been set up and is abuzz with activity. Eight to 10 vehicles decorated with the faces of BJP leaders, including the state party chief Dr K Laxman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, their logo and their trademark saffron colour are ensuring that they take turns and do continuous rounds of the city. Local BJP leaders say that a similar exercise is being undertaken in the rural areas in the constituency as well. Up against Harish Rao, who is also the nephew of incumbent Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and has been with the party since its inception, is Naini Narottham Reddy, the BJP's district president.    The Congress-led Mahakutami or grand alliance has allotted the seat to the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS), much to the displeasure of the latter, as senior leaders feel that it is a 'losing ticket.' While the TJS has fielded Bhavani Reddy, seemingly a rookie, the BJP has also fielded a fresh face and say that they have already done the necessary ground work. "We are confident of a win and we have been working hard on the ground and the voters are with us," says Sandeep, a local BJP karyakarta. While Naini is a long-time loyalist of the party, who has worked his way up the ranks, he is far from a well-known face like Harish Rao. Most BJP members are hoping that Naini being a Siddipet native, combined with Narendra Modi's image, should be enough to help them sail through. However, Harish on the other hand has never lost an election and has held the Siddipet seat since 2004, with his majority only increasing with each passing election.  Raju, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), says, "Harish Rao has become arrogant due to his power and we are campaigning against his confident claims that he will win.""The leader aspiring for re-election in Siddipet is spending more time in Gajwel constituency campaigning for KCR, than for himself," he adds. At the BJP office, a number of young men can be seen gathering in and out of a room where Naini is seated as he chalks out a strategy for the upcoming polls scheduled for December 7. Speaking to TNM, when asked about what the main issue of the campaign was, Naini says, "Harish Rao has further suppressed those without a voice and he has filled the stomachs of contractors. He has taken kickbacks from all major irrigation projects in the state that came up over the past four years. That is what we are seeking to communicate to the voters and we hope that they give him an apt response." When asked if the BJP was sure of a victory, Naini told this reporter, "If we were not so confident, we wouldn't be here talking. We are sure that the people will vote him out and vote us in." Meanwhile, the BJP candidate has come to the notice of the TRS, as they lodged a complaint against him on Saturday with the Election Commission, alleging that he had asked for votes based on caste, specifically asking the Reddy community to vote for him. TRS General Secretary Sreenivas Reddy, who met Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar, also submitted a video of the speech, which allegedly violated the rules laid down by the EC. Telangana will go to the polls on December 7 after the Legislative Assembly was dissolved ahead of its tenure on September 6 this year. The counting of votes will take place on December 11.

On Sunday evening, 40 girls from the BC Ladies Hostel in Suryapet in Telangana were admitted to the local government hospital after presenting with symptoms of food poisoning. The girls had all eaten dal and rice for dinner at their hostel mess and within hours, all of them developed severe stomach pain and vomiting, and had to be taken to the Suryapet Government Hospital. Doctors at the hospital immediately began treatment for food poisoning, after which all 40 of them recovered and were discharged, according to officials from the Suryapet District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr Niranjan’s office. “The girls were admitted on Sunday immediately after they began presenting with vomiting and stomach pain. They were all treated and discharged,” said an official from the DMHO’s office. “We have arranged for a team of health experts to follow up on the issue with the hostel and are taking efforts to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again,” the official added. A team of doctors and medical personnel have set up a camp at the hostel under the guidance of Deputy DMHO Dr P Venkatramana. The team plans to screen the other girls in the hostel and monitor the situation closely to ensure that such an outbreak does not occur again. “As of now all the girls who presented symptoms have been cured and sent home, but we are taking these steps to make sure that no one suddenly presents with the same issues in case someone is affected by food poisoning later. We will also make sure to take steps to keep this from occurring again,” added the official. Earlier this month, a similar incident took place in Kannur, wherein 11 students at the Municipal High School sports hostel fell ill after eating biryani that was served at the hostel the night before. Hospital authorities treated the children for food poisoning and discharged them shortly thereafter.

Sonia Gandhi to address rally at Medchal on Nov 23

Congress President Rahul Gandhi is also expected to visit constituencies in north and south Telangana, but his travel dates are yet to be finalised.
As election campaign reaches a fever-pitch in Telangana, the Congress is all set to rope in UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, who will be travelling to the state to address a public meeting in Medchal constituency in the outskirts of Hyderabad on November 23. According to the itinerary, the senior leader will be reaching the Begumpet airport at 5 pm on November 23 and will be travelling to Medchal via road. Medchal is located around 40 km from the state’s capital. She is expected to return to New Delhi on the same day by around 8 pm. As the Congress has joined hands with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) as part of a grand alliance or ‘Mahakutami’ in their fight against the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) for the upcoming polls, speculation is rife on whether the leaders of these parties will be invited by the Congress to share the dais with Sonia Gandhi during the meeting. According to senior leaders in the party, Congress President Rahul Gandhi would also be visiting constituencies in north and south Telangana in an attempt to mobilise people across the state to vote for the party. The dates for his travel are yet to be finalised. The Congress is expected to be banking on a commonly held sentiment among sympathisers of the party that it was Sonia Gandhi’s decision that led to the formation of Telangana. The party has repeatedly claimed in the past that Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had promised to join hands with the Congress if a separate state was granted, but backstabbed the Congress in the last moment before the 2014 polls. Sonia Gandhi’s presence is also expected to boost the morale of party workers in the state. On Sunday, ahead of the last day for filing nominations for the Telangana Assembly elections, the Congress in New Delhi finally released its final list of candidates. The Congress on Saturday released its third list of 13 candidates for the Telangana Assembly polls, fielding party veteran and former Andhra Pradesh Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah from Jangaon, a seat that was rumoured to be contested by the TJS chief Kondadaram, a party in alliance with the Congress. Kondadaram on Sunday announced that he wouldn’t be contesting from any constituency for the upcoming polls. Telangana goes to the polls on December 7 and results will be declared on December 11.

Ground report: Why this Telangana village has unanimously decided to vote for Harish Rao

Telangana 2018
At Ibrahimpur, locals say that their fate has turned around since Harish Rao adopted the village.
It was last month that Telangana caretaker Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao took the stage in Ibrahimpur, a small village bordering Siddipet and Sircilla constituencies, and had an emotional outburst. Ibrahimpur is the village that Harish had adopted three years ago. Moved by the unanimous resolution of the villagers to vote only for him, Harish said, “I feel like quitting politics now when I am enjoying enormous love and tremendous support. I will continue to serve you irrespective of whether I will be in politics or not.”   This emotional speech had become a topic of discussion on several television news channels in the state for days together as it came amid allegations that the TRS was blacking out his events and attempting to sideline him. However, what was lost in the debates was perhaps the ‘love’ from the locals of Ibrahimpur that he was referring to. A visit to the village, ahead of the election, clearly shows why the locals made the decision. One can clearly tell where the jurisdiction of Ibrahimpur, a model village certified by the state and central government, begins. The roads are as clean as they come and both sides are lined with trees. Solar panels line many tiled roofs in the village as well. Locals say that their fate has turned around since Harish Rao adopted the village. “It was a remote border village at the end of the constituency and district, with Rajanna Sircilla on the other side. Earlier, all letters addressed to us would find their way to Ibrahimnagar village some 30 km away. Today, everyone locally knows where we are situated and it's all because of him (Harish Rao),” says Raju, a local youth.                  Ibrahimpur’s tryst with Harish Rao It was in August 2015, during a Grama Jyothi programme at Ibrahimpur, that Harish Rao decided to adopt the village, shortly after he was impressed with the community banding together and implementing the ‘Inkudu gunta’ or a water conservation soak pit technique. “This is how it works,” says Raju, explaining, “Each house has its own pit and we divert all the water generated from household into the pit, to naturally evaporate. This means that there are much fewer mosquitoes and no pungent smell is emitted, for instance, when the drains of several houses are linked together.”   According to locals, there are no more open drains in the village, which resulted in a massive dip in mosquitoes and water-borne diseases. As a result, the number of Rural Medical Practitioners (RMPs) in the village has reduced from four to one; the remaining RMO now only treats long-term illnesses, locals claim. When asked about the abundance of trees in the village, Nagesh Reddy, the son of the sarpanch K Lakshmi Devi, says, “We received 1 lakh saplings from the Forest Department as part of the Haritha Haram scheme. We initially thought that we would plant it over a period of several days, but Harish Rao insisted that we should plant them in a single day, and we did. It was a complete group effort.” In fact, even the open drains that existed earlier were dumped with mud and lined with trees. The village also boasts of an ‘Any Time Water’ machine, which allows locals to fill up 20-litre cans at least two to three times a day after they swipe a card that can be recharged. Ibrahimpur was also the first village to go 'cashless' in Telangana after demonetisation in 2016. The school has also been refurbished recently in bright colours and the locals say that their children have no complaints about the mid-day meals. The panchayat is powered by 3 KiloWatts solar energy and over 50 houses in the village, who have applied for one solar panel set that generates 1 KW, enjoy the same. “We only pay the token amount for an electricity connection. We can run everything else for free at no extra cost,” says a woman, as she sees this reporter clicking a picture of the solar panel atop her house.   The village, with a population of 1,230 predominantly consists of people from the Madiga community, which is considered a Schedule Caste, followed by the sheep-rearing Yadav community. There is also a significant population of the Reddy community.   Another unique initiative in the village is a massive ‘community shed’ for all sheep in the village, owned by Yadav families. Each family in the village is allotted a shed to keep their sheep and there is a bulb powered by solar energy. They come in the morning to take them out for grazing and return in the evening after the day’s work and put them in the shed. “Usually, the sheep are kept in cramped spaces in a shed attached to the house itself. Because of a separate shed, both the sheep and the owners are less likely to fall prey to diseases. Additionally, trade becomes easier because everyone in the village knows that they can find us here,” a shepherd remarks as he gets ready to take his sheep out of the compound. ‘A sure win for Harish’ Locals insist that the Siddipet constituency is a ‘sure win’ for Harish Rao that they are unanimous in their decision to vote for him. “The candidates for opposition parties are welcome to come here and campaign, but we would advise them to spend their time and resources in another village because they have no chance here. They will only end up addressing an empty venue,” says Nagesh Reddy, as those listening nod in unison. “The problem with opposition parties like the Congress is that they have a feudal mindset. Once the leader takes a decision, no one can question it; but we are different. While TRS leaders clearly have more influence and power, there is a lot of decision-making left to the local level, which ensures that we discuss ideas and implement them successfully with the consent of the entire community,” he adds. Siddipet constituency is perhaps the most important one in the namesake district, 8,41,42 total voters as per the latest electoral rolls released by the Election Commission. It has been the bastion of the TRS and incumbent Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s family since 1985. While KCR won continuously from the seat from his first victory, in 2004, he handed over the seat to his trusted confidant and nephew, Harish Rao, who has only been increasing his vote share and the majority over opposition candidates with each passing election. Throughout his entire political career, Harish has only contested from Siddipet and never lost an election, winning three bye-polls and two general elections to the Legislative Assembly. He has also built an image of a man among the masses as he gets ready and seeks votes to serve his sixth term. “There is no other MLA as approachable as him and that’s a fact. He always listens to the grievances of the people and takes action. The opposition lacks that and has created an image of being distant when in power, which is centralised in Hyderabad. This is why everyone votes for him,” one local of Ibrahimpur notes.

Janasena won’t contest Telangana Assembly polls, to focus on Lok Sabha instead

The announcement was made on Monday, which was the last day for filing nominations for the upcoming elections.
On Monday, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan announced that his party Janasena will not be contesting in the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections on December 7. He announced that the party would instead be focusing on contesting the Lok Sabha election in the upcoming year. “Janasena is focusing on the areas which are meant for it regarding the elections. As the Assembly elections scheduled earlier, it is a bit difficult to participate, hence Janasena party has decided to participate in Parliamentary elections after the meeting of party leaders today. I am informing here that we are starting our preparations from now for Parliamentary elections,” reads the statement issued by Pawan Kalyan. It was earlier reported that the party would be contesting in the Assembly elections, however after the TRS chief dissolved the government, fast forwarding the elections, the Janasena has now come out with its current stance. At the time, Pawan Kalyan had stated that the party would contest from 23 Assembly and three Lok Sabha seats in Telangana. Addressing the media on Monday he said, “Had the Assembly elections been held as per schedule (in April 2019), the Jana Sena would have surely jumped into the fray. Since the Assembly polls have been advanced, we are not geared up for the contest.” He also added that this decision had been made after discussing the same with leaders in the party and that they would begin preparing for the Lok Sabha elections right away. Monday was the last day for filing nominations for the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections. The YSR Congress party finally announced its complete list of candidates on Sunday evening, though it had previously stated that it would be avoiding these elections and would instead focus on the 2019 general elections in its base of Andhra Pradesh.
